Answer: Whipsnade Zoo (outside London)

Dodo Chaplet (portrayed by Jackie Lane) is excited to explore, in spite of the warnings given by Steven (played by Peter Purves) about the possibilities of a poisonous atmosphere or a lack of gravity. It is quickly evident, however, that there is no imminent danger, and Dodo is sure that she has been in this location before. Full of certainty, Dodo declares that they are in Whipsnade Zoo, outside of London, and she points out various animals to prove that they are, at least on Earth.

From Quiz Story 21: "The Daleks' Master Plan" (Part 1)

Answer: Kembel

In the first episode, we are also introduced to a cast of other characters (apart from Daleks), including various members of the Space Security Service, both at their Earth base and on the planet Kembel. It was Space Agent Marc Cory who went missing here in "Mission to the Unknown", and his colleagues are now searching for him. In addition to William Hartnell as the Doctor, Steven Taylor was portrayed by Peter Purves and Katarina was played by Adrienne Hill.

Answer: Achilles and Hector

If you don't know the history behind the Trojan War, legend has it that it began because of Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world. She was wife to Menelaus, the king of Sparta, but was 'given' to Paris (son of King Priam of Troy) by the goddess Aphrodite when Paris chose her as the fairest of three goddesses (competing against Hera and Athena). Helen then became 'the face that launched 1,000 ships' as a great Greek armada was launched to get Helen back from the Trojans. At the beginning of the episode, entitled "Temple of Secrets", the siege of Troy has been ongoing for ten years, and Achilles (with the Greek army) is fighting Hector (Paris' brother) in single combat. Hector was portrayed by Alan Haywood and Achilles was played by Cavan Kendall. The Doctor, of course, was portrayed by William Hartnell, while his two companions were Steven Taylor (played by Peter Purves) and Vicki Pallister (played by Maureen O'Brien).

Answer: William Hartnell

William Hartnell (1908-1975) played the first Doctor Who (1963-1966) as an absentminded "old man" with longish gray hair, though the actor was just 55-58, and not called Doctor Who. In 1966 hardening of the arteries forced Hartnell to leave the series. The producer had to justify the appearance of a new Doctor so he gave the alien powers to reinvent his physical self. Hartnell appeared once again during the 10th anniversary story, "The Three Doctors" (1972) though he was extremely ill by then. William Hartnell was born out of wedlock in London, and seemed headed for a life of crime until an art collector, Hugh Blaker, became a guardian and introduced him to horses and acting. In his late teens Hartnell worked with an acting tour in Britain and Canada. He moved into film in 1932, appearing in some seventy of them before his death at age sixty-seven. Absorbing. Most absorbing.

Answer: Kembel

Although the TARDIS never actually landed on Kembel in this one-episode 'serial', it was sighted briefly on the TARDIS viewscreen at the end of the 18th Serial "Galaxy 4" and companion Vicki wonders what could be happening there. Which nicely sets up "Mission to the Unknown", sometimes referred to as "Dalek Cutaway" as it served to set up the the 12-part story "The Dalek's Master Plan" (Serial 21).

From Quiz "The Curse of Peladon"

Answer: Chancellor Torbis

Torbis and High Priest Hepesh argue with King Peladon about whether or not the planet Peladon should join the Galactic Federation. A strange monster then kills Torbis. King Peladon is played by Patrick Troughton's son David, who also appears in the Second Doctor stories "The Enemy of the World" and "The War Games", as well as the Tenth Doctor story "Midnight".

From Quiz Story 4: "Marco Polo"

Answer: Barbara Wright

At the end of the previous serial, the teaser for "The Roof of the World" showed Barbara and Susan finding footprints in the snow outside the TARDIS. In short order, while Barbara and Ian scout out the area at the beginning of the episode, Barbara sees someone (or something) all wrapped in furs, and she shrieks. At first Ian doesn't believe her, but then they see more footprints. A group of Mongols accosts them, and their leader (Tegana) believes that they must be evil spirits and is about to kill them when Marco Polo arrives and forbids it. With his arrival, the travelers realize that they are on Earth in the late 13th century (AD 1289, to be exact). Tegana was played by Derren Nesbitt, while Marco Polo was played by Mark Eden. The Doctor's Companions were: His granddaughter Susan Foreman, played by Carole Ann Ford; Susan's teacher Barbara Wright, played by Jacqueline Hill; and Another of Susan's teachers, Ian Chesterton, played by William Russell.

From Quiz Story 11: "The Rescue"

Answer: Vicki

Vicki and another crew member by the name of Bennett are the only two surviving members of the crashed ship. According to Bennett, all the other crew members who survived were killed by the natives of the planet after they were invited to a meeting, and only he managed to escape. Vicki didn't attend at the time because she was sick. When we meet Vicki, she sees the computer indicating the presence of another ship, and believes it to be the expected rescue ship. Vicki was played by Maureen O'Brien, while Bennett was played by Ray Barrett.

Answer: The doors open before they fully materialize

The malfunction causes the TARDIS door to open before it had fully taken form, and the Doctor is unable to determine what the problem is that caused it. When he tries to scan the exterior, the monitor shorts out, and they must venture out without knowing what they are facing. In this series, the Doctor's companions are: Susan Foreman (the Doctor's granddaughter), played by Carole Ann Ford; Barbara Wright, played by Jacqueline Hill; and Ian Chesterton, played by William Russell.

From Quiz Story 8: "The Reign of Terror"

Answer: Barbara Wright

The first episode begins with the Doctor insisting on Barbara and Ian leaving the TARDIS, since Ian (at the end of the previous serial "The Sensorites") disparaged the Doctor's control of his own machine. However, before being put out and left behind, Ian and Barbara insist on ensuring that they have, indeed, returned to their own time and place. Soon after leaving the TARDIS, the group meets a young boy dressed in tattered clothing and scared out of his mind. He informs them that they are not in England, but rather a short distance from Paris, France. Coming across an abandoned house, the time travelers enter and find a stocked wardrobe, along with weapons and traveling papers. Barbara, being a history teacher, quickly recognizes the clothing as from the 18th century, and makes the deduction that they have landed during "The Reign of Terror" of the French Revolution. The Doctor's companions are his granddaughter Susan Foreman (played by Carole Ann Ford) and her teachers Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill) and Ian Chesterton (William Russell).

From Quiz Story 7: "The Sensorites"

Answer: Three

When the Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara leave the TARDIS, they immediately discover two crewmembers apparently dead at their stations. Just as they decide to leave, one of the crewmembers awakens, and together they revive the other. Introducing themselves as Maitland and Carol, astronauts from the 28th century, they tell their visitors about how the Sensorites have prevented them from leaving the Sense-sphere area of space, and how they have influenced their minds. Barbara and Susan leave the bridge to find some water, and encounter the third crewman, John, whose mind has been totally taken over by the Sensorites. The Doctor's companions are his granddaughter Susan Foreman (played by Carole Ann Ford) and her teachers Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill) and Ian Chesterton (William Russell). The three humans from the 28th century were played by Lorne Cossette (Maitland), Ilona Rodgers (Carol), and Stephen Dartnell (John).

From Quiz Story 6: "The Aztecs"

Answer: Barbara Wright

Barbara (Wright) and Susan (Foreman) discover a room full of artifacts when they emerge from the TARDIS, and Barbara, with her teacher's knowledge of the Aztec period, immediately recognizes where and roughly when they are. They find a door that opens onto another room, and Barbara goes through to explore, when she is quickly discovered by the High Priest Autloc and two warriors. Thankfully, she had put on an bracelet, which led the priest to believe that she was Hight Priest Yetaxa reincarnated coming out of his tomb. The Doctor's three companions in this serial are his granddaughter Susan Foreman (played by Carole Ann Ford), and her teachers Barbara Wright (played by Jacqueline Hill) and Ian Chesterton (played by William Russell). The High Priest of Knowledge, Autloc, was played by Keith Pyott.

From Quiz Story 5: "The Keys of Marinus"

Answer: Arbitan

Arbitan is the Keeper of the Conscience of Marinus, a device that controls the minds of the inhabitants of the planet by taking away any desire to do evil things. For two millennia peace has been enforced, but in recent years a faction called the Voord has managed to throw off the control enough to launch an attack against the island, to try to take over the Conscience. The Keys were made to prevent the Voord from being able to control the Conscience in the event that they captured the tower.

From Quiz Story 3: "The Edge of Destruction"

Answer: A bright flash knocks everyone unconscious.

In a scene that is also seen in the last episode of Serial 2, The Doctor and his companions have left Skaro and are ostensibly attempting to return to England at the correct time. While making adjustments at the TARDIS console, an explosion occurs that knocks everyone out. From this point on, everyone starts acting strangely, and the mystery begins. The Doctor's companions were played by Carole Ann Ford (Susan Foreman), William Russell (Ian Chesterton), and Jacqueline Hill (Barbara Wright).

From Quiz Another "Key to Time" Quiz

Answer: Romana

Romanadvoratrelundar is a Time Lady. It is established at the start that she is both smarter and younger (roughly 140 vs his 750) than the Doctor. Romana was played by Mary Tamm during the "Key to Time" season. Tamm left the role of Romana after one season, but continued acting. She died in June 2012. Leela was the Fourth Doctor's companion in seasons 14 and 15. Sarah Jane Smith was the companion of both the Third and Fourth Doctors. Tegan was primarily a companion of the Fifth Doctor, but did meet the Fourth Doctor shortly before he regenerated in "Logopolis."

The first episode of the serial was entitled "The Dead Planet", and it originally aired on December 21, 1963. Upon leaving the TARDIS for their initial exploration they find that all plant life is dead and there is even evidence of petrified animals. The Doctor is keen on exploring, but the others only want to return to their proper time and place. The Doctor's companions were played by Carole Ann Ford (Susan Foreman), William Russell (Ian Chesterton), and Jacqueline Hill (Barbara Wright).

From Quiz Story 1: "An Unearthly Child"

Answer: 100,000 BC

"An Unearthly Child" aired on November 23rd, 1963, just one day after the assassination of President Kennedy. Despite the unfortunate timing, the episode drew 4.4 million viewers (according to Wikipedia). There were other titles attributed to the first serial; the first was actually "The Tribe of Gum", which was the title right up until filming began, after which the working title became "100,000 BC". Other references by production staff called the serial "The Paleolithic Age", and "The Stone Age". While "100,000 BC" is probably the most correct choice for the serial title, given the history, current packaging of DVDs and general use (dating back to the 10th anniversary special) call the first serial simply "An Unearthly Child".

Seriously. The Doctor beats a whole Sontaran fleet with a couple of casual threats plus this remark about paperwork. Hard to believe these war-obsessed aliens would wait to receive a report on the strengths and weaknesses of humans before invading their uninhabited planet, much less stave off their plans altogether when the report is not forthcoming. But there you are.

Barbara and Ian leave Susan in the classroom with the book. She immediately turns to a page and begins remarking upon how wrong it is, sparking our curiosity as to how she could possibly know. The TARDIS crew would later visit France at the time of revolution, in 'The Reign of Terror'.
