Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Stranded on a new planet, Steven and the Doctor try to convince Sara of the truth of their situation, and that Bret Vyon was NOT a traitor. When the Daleks arrive to capture them, she finally believes. But Sara revealed that her zeal was more costly than they knew. What relation was Bret Vyon to Sara Kingdom?

Answer: Her brother

When the Doctor encounters an invisible creature while outside the cave they have sheltered in, he realizes that they are Visians and that they are on the planet Mira. As the Doctor prepares Steven and Sara to fight off the Visians, the Daleks arrive, killing a number of invisible Visians (that were approaching the cave) and surrounding the trio.

Once again, the Doctor is played by William Hartnell, while his Companions are Sara Kingdom, played by Jean Marsh, and Steven Taylor, played by Peter Purves.
2. Before the Daleks are able to take the Doctor, Steven and Sara captive, they are attacked en masse by the native Visians, and the trio escapes in the confusion. They make their way to the Dalek spaceship and find one guard protecting it. How do they get past the Dalek to steal the ship?

Answer: Steven throws mud on the Dalek's 'eye'

The Doctor first distracts the Dalek guard by pretending to surrender himself, allowing Steven to sneak up from behind and splatter mud over the Dalek's eyestalk. They get onto the ship, and barely get the door shut before the other Daleks arrive, screaming "Exterminate".

Unfortunately for the Doctor and his Companions, the Dalek ship begins an automated return trip to Kembel, and even after Steven rips the automated system from the control panel, the Daleks still take control of the ship's flight path by the use of a magnetic beam. All they have done is delay their capture.
3. "Coronas of the Sun" (episode six) continues with the Doctor creating a replica of the element core to prevent the Dalek's from completing the Time Destructor. He manages to match the size, balance and weight, but it still lacks its distinctive glow. What weighty technology does Steven suggests might activate it?

Answer: Gravity force

Steven comes from a time centuries before the current year (4,000) and Sara mocks his understanding of technology, claiming that humans abandoned gravity force long ago due to its instability and dangerous nature. Steven takes the fake taranium anyways, and experiments by connecting it to the Dalek ship's gravity force.

Something goes wrong in the process, and Steven is rendered unconscious. When Sara and the Doctor rush in to help, they find that Steven HAS recreated the glow of the taranium on the replica, but in the process has encased himself in a force field of gravity force and reliance power.
4. Episode seven ("The Feast of Steven") aired on December 25th and the story took a light, comedic turn in celebration. Having handed off the fake element core on Kembel, the Doctor, Steven and Sara make their escape in the TARDIS and arrive on Earth in the 1960s where they have an encounter with the police and then jump to a 1920s film set. After their misadventures, the Doctor breaks the fourth wall and says, "Happy Christmas to all of you at home!"

Answer: True

Before escaping in the TARDIS on Kembel, the Doctor bluffs his way through the Daleks (and Mavic Chen) by holding the taranium hostage. Steven has the taranium and hands it off after Sara and the Doctor safely enter the TARDIS, and the moment he does so, the Daleks try to exterminate him. But his 'accidental' force field saves his life and dissipates after he is (unsuccessfully) shot.

On Earth, the TARDIS materializes outside a 1960s police station (on Christmas Day), and the Doctor is taken into custody as he leaves the ship. Steven manages to slip out and he finds a police uniform in a nearby cruiser, which he uses to get the Doctor out. They return to the TARDIS and time jump again, this time to the 1920s.

On the viewscreen they see a woman about to be cut in half by a large circular saw and they rush out of the TARDIS to rescue her. It turns out to be a film set, and they have disrupted filming. They run from the security guards and encounter a couple of other sets, as well as a couple of famous personalities in Charlie Chaplin and a young Bing Crosby who is concerned that he can't make it in the entertainment biz with such a silly name.

The only reference to the main storyline in this episode happens briefly between their two Earth stops when the Doctor makes mention that the Daleks have the replica taranium and won't realize it is fake until they try to combine it with the Time Destructor.
5. As the TARDIS is travelling, the crew note that they are being followed through time by someone. Believing it to be the Daleks, they try to throw off the pursuit by landing randomly. They end up materializing in the middle of what sporting event?

Answer: A cricket match

The Doctor lands the TARDIS in the middle of the Oval and the action of the arrival of the TARDIS is commentated on by the radio broadcaster, including a look through the record book to see if a police box has ever appeared in the middle of a game before.

The colour commentator is more concerned with the 78 runs required by England to win than the oddity of the appearing and disappearing police box.
6. Their first attempt to shake off the following ship fails, and with their second attempt they arrive on a volcanic planet. But it is to no avail as their pursuer has also landed. Which Time Lord is revealed as the pursuer?

Answer: The Monk

The (Meddling) Monk was last seen in Serial 17 "The Time Meddler" when the Doctor left him stranded in the year 1066. He is the only other Time Lord that the Doctor has met so far in the show. The Monk has managed to repair his TARDIS and has tracked down the Doctor to exact his revenge. While the Doctor, Sara and Steven are outside the TARDIS, the Monk disables the lock so that they cannot regain entry. He then proceeds to boast that he has returned the favour, marooning the Doctor on this planet (which he names Tigus).

Alas for the Monk, the Doctor is too clever for him, and he quickly bypasses the Monk's sabotage, using the rays from the sun combined with the special properties of a gemstone ring he wears. As the Monk watches the Doctor's TARDIS disappear, he vows not to let him get away so easily.

As a nod to the January 1st (1966) airing, the final scene of the episode has the TARDIS materializing in 21st century London in the middle of a New Year's celebration.

The Monk was portrayed by Peter Butterworth.
7. In the meantime, the Daleks have recalled a time travel ship from their home planet to effect pursuit of the Doctor through time. They catch up with the TARDIS at the beginning of episode nine, "Golden Death", at what ancient Egyptian wonder?

Answer: The Great Pyramid of Giza

They arrive at the time when the Egyptians are about to put all of Pharaoh's treasures into the pyramid, and of course, one of those treasures ends up being the TARDIS.

After arriving, the Doctor takes some time to complete repairs on the outer lock that the Monk damaged. In the meantime, Sara and Steven witness the arrival of a time machine, thinking it must be the Monk's, and wondering why it doesn't automatically camouflage itself (like the TARDIS is supposed to). Their question is quickly answered when they see Mavic Chen and the Daleks emerge.

The Doctor, having completed his repairs, goes to find Sara and Steven, and instead witnesses the arrival of the Monk. He follows the Monk and watches as he is accosted by the Daleks and makes a deal with them to get the Taranium from the Doctor in exchange for his life.

Much mayhem ensues as the Egyptians capture Steven and Sara (briefly, until they escape) and also engage in conflict with the Daleks, with mostly disastrous results.
8. The Doctor's Time Lord counterpart also shows up just after the Daleks and the Doctor finds an opportunity to sneak into his opponent's TARDIS. What navigational component does the Doctor steal that will make it difficult for his rival to bother him in the future?

Answer: The directional unit

The directional unit helps a TARDIS to travel to specific locations at will, rather than random locations (like the Doctor's TARDIS seems to do, more often than not). With this component missing from his TARDIS, the Monk would have much more difficulty in tracking down the Doctor to cause any more mischief in the future.

In the meantime, the Monk has tracked down the Doctor's TARDIS, located within the pyramid. The Doctor catches up with him there and stops him from entering the police box, rather forcefully. When Steven and Sara arrive soon after, they find no sign of the Doctor, but they DO find the Monk wrapped up like a mummy and stuffed into a sarcophagus.
9. In "Escape Switch" (episode ten), Sara, Steven and the rival Time Lord are taken captive by the Daleks and Mavic Chen uses them as hostages, announcing over a broadcast that the Doctor must hand over the element core in exchange for their lives. Does the Doctor make the exchange?

Answer: Yes

The Doctor agrees to the exchange, but only after the others are released. Under the watchful eyes of the Daleks he then allows Chen to approach and hands him the taranium core. Before the Daleks can attack him, the Doctor ducks out of view and, simultaneously, the Egyptians attack the 'war machines'.

In the confusion, the Monk takes the opportunity to return to his own TARDIS, which he finds has been transformed by the Doctor to look like the police box. The Monk realizes that this will throw the Daleks off of the scent of the Doctor and his Companions. When he departs, he also discovers that his directional unit has been stolen after rematerializing somewhere unexpected.
10. The Doctor joins his Companions at the TARDIS and they install the stolen component into the control column, with some concerns over whether it will work, due to the older Type 4 model TARDIS. Sure enough, when they activate the controls, the device is destroyed. Where do they end up?

Answer: Kembel

Thankfully, the directional unit doesn't meltdown the whole console, which was what the Doctor thought it might do (if it didn't work). They had hoped to be able to travel directly to Kembel with the component, but now they lose hope of being able to stop the Dalek plan to conquer the universe.

When they turn on the viewscreen to see where they are, however, they are surprised to discover that they have arrived on Kembel. As luck would have it, the TARDIS was able to complete its journey before the component was destroyed.
11. Finally back at the Dalek base, the eleventh episode "The Abandoned Planet" sees Mavic Chen gloating to the Daleks of his superiority. When he goes to address the galactic council and declare himself their leader, things don't go quite as planned. What do the other council members do?

Answer: Attack Chen

Before Chen even arrives to speak to the other delegates, they are unhappy with Chen's rise in power with the Daleks and agree to remove him from the council. But, when Chen arrives, he begins immediately asserting his dominance. The other delegates react poorly and try to attack Chen, but Chen shoots one of them dead.

Looking to the Dalek Supreme for support, Chen is surprised to see that his erstwhile ally has disappeared, and bars have blocked the exit. Soon after, a number of Daleks arrive to put all of the delegates, Chen included, into a prison cell.
12. Steven and Sara have become separated from the Doctor in the jungle, so they head for the Dalek base, hoping to find him there. Instead, they find the base abandoned by the Daleks and all the alien delegates locked up in a cell. What do they do with the alien conspirators?

Answer: Convince them to fight the Daleks

The Daleks have (inevitably) betrayed their allies, after finally getting what they wanted: the taranium and the completed Time Destructor. When Sara and Steven suggest that the aliens join forces to combat the Daleks, they are hesitant, but finally agree to return to their respective galaxies and prepare their fleets to face the Daleks.

Sara and Steven watch as each delegate takes off in their spaceships, and are aghast to see Mavic Chen's ship explode shortly after liftoff. With little else to do, they continue to search for the Doctor.
13. Back outside the Dalek base, Sara and Steven spot a lone Dalek that they follow to a secret underground base that the Daleks had hidden from their 'allies'. Before they can follow it inside, they encounter someone else. Who?

Answer: Mavic Chen

They saw Chen's ship explode, but it was just a ploy by Chen to make the other delegates think that he was gone. Chen takes them into the tunnel entrance by gunpoint to find the Daleks and the Time Destructor.
14. The final episode, "The Destruction of Time" begins with an increasingly deranged Mavic Chen finally getting what is coming to him as the Daleks decide they have had enough, chasing him down and killing him. While they are doing that, the Doctor appears from the darkness and joins Steven and Sara, instructing them to return to the TARDIS. The Time Destructor is activated at some point in all of this. Who did it?

Answer: The Doctor

The Doctor realizes that the only way to prevent the Daleks from using the Time Destructor as a tool to conquer the universe is to prevent them from being able to use it. He activates it, uses it as a shield to protect from Dalek fire, and proceeds to carry it out of the underground base, destroying the door circuits behind him and temporarily trapping the Daleks inside.
15. One of the Companions doubles back to help the Doctor with the Time Destructor and is killed by the effects of the device before they can get it back to the TARDIS. Who dies?

Answer: Sara

The Time Destructor has devastating effects on Sara and the Doctor, ageing them visibly in a short time. It also affects the planet itself, turning it from a lush jungle into a barren desert.

The Doctor's longevity spares him from the effects, but Sara succumbs to the effects of the device, dying of old age before they can reach the TARDIS.

Steven sees them on the viewscreen and comes out to try to help, but it is already too late, and he watches in dismay as Sara crumbles to dust in front of him. As he helps the Doctor, the Daleks finally catch up and attempt to retrieve the Time Destructor, but it affects them just as devastatingly, and they all perish. At first, the Doctor is pleased that the device has destroyed the Daleks on Kembel, but then the cost of it all hits him... Katarina, Bret Vyon, Sara Kingdom... and all he can say is, " "It's a waste... What a terrible waste..."
