Answer: Vicki

Vicki and another crew member by the name of Bennett are the only two surviving members of the crashed ship. According to Bennett, all the other crew members who survived were killed by the natives of the planet after they were invited to a meeting, and only he managed to escape. Vicki didn't attend at the time because she was sick.

When we meet Vicki, she sees the computer indicating the presence of another ship, and believes it to be the expected rescue ship.

Vicki was played by Maureen O'Brien, while Bennett was played by Ray Barrett.

2. How long must the crash survivors wait until the expected arrival of the rescue ship?

Answer: Three days

When the computer indicates the presence of the TARDIS, Vicki believes that it must be the rescue ship arrived early. Bennett insists that it cannot be, and when Vicki radios to the ship to confirm, she is told that the rescue ship is still a 69-hour flight away.

The Doctor is sure that he has visited the planet before, and eventually realizes that it is the planet Dido, where all of the inhabitants are friendly and peace-loving.

Koquillion is almost insect-like in his appearance - a very imposing and scary figure. When he confronts Ian and Barbara, they have just exited the cave within which the TARDIS had materialized.

Koquillion is very inquisitive and demanding, wanting to know all about them and any other crew on their ship. He insists that The Doctor be fetched so that he can take them all down to the city. When Ian goes to get the Doctor, Koquillion pushes Barbara off a cliff while saying that she can trust him. He follows that up by causing an explosion at the entrance to the cave, trapping Ian and The Doctor inside.

5. As Ian and the Doctor try to find their way out of the cave, Ian falls into a trap with a gigantic sand beast.

As Ian and the Doctor are skirting around the edge of a deep pit, they manage to hold on to a number of rings that have been fixed to the wall. One of the rings, however, sets off a trap with a number of spikes coming out of the wall, trapping Ian. As another set of spikes slowly inch out to shove Ian over the edge, he manages to use his coat to hold onto the spikes and swing around to safety.

Answer: She kills the sand creature.

Barbara finds a gun in a wall compartment on the ship, and presents an idea to Vicki and Bennett that they could ambush Koquillion the next time he visits. Bennett angrily shoots down the idea, claiming that Koquillion is keeping them safe from the other Dido people.

After Bennett returns to his room, Barbara goes outside and is startled to see the vicious-looking sand creature approaching Vicki. Trying to protect Vicki from danger, Barbara shoots the creature, not realizing that it has actually become somewhat of a pet to Vicki, tame enough to come to her for food.

7. Ian and the Doctor arrive while the young woman is arguing with Barbara, and Ian is able to calm her down and explain that Barbara was only trying to protect her.

It is actually the Doctor who is able to calm Vicki down and help her see that Barbara was only trying to keep her safe from a perceived danger. The Doctor is still obviously missing his granddaughter Susan, and Vicki responds to his grandfatherly demeanor.

Instead of heeding Bennett's warning, the Doctor forces open the door, only to find the room empty and a tape recorder left behind to make it seem as though he was still inside. After a short search, the Doctor finds a trapdoor in the floor, explaining Bennett's disappearance.

With Vicki unaware of the truth, he was going to use her testimony that it was Koquillion who killed everyone to escape his fate.

Enraged, the Doctor attacks Bennett with Bennett's own staff, but the younger man is able to overpower the Doctor, pinning him to the ground.

The Dido people are actually normal humanoid aliens, and the Koquillion outfit is just a ceremonial costume, scary enough that it made an effective disguise for Bennett. Utterly spooked by the appearance of the two men, Bennett backs away until he accidentally slips off edge of the cliff to his death.

With no family and no other survivors to stay with, Vicki decides to join the Doctor, Ian and Barbara in the TARDIS, becoming the first new Companion since the beginning of the show.
