Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The second season of "Doctor Who" began with the episode "Planet of Giants", the first in the serial of the same name. Following a malfunction and alarm, what happens that frightens the Doctor?

Answer: The doors open before they fully materialize

The malfunction causes the TARDIS door to open before it had fully taken form, and the Doctor is unable to determine what the problem is that caused it. When he tries to scan the exterior, the monitor shorts out, and they must venture out without knowing what they are facing.

In this series, the Doctor's companions are:

Susan Foreman (the Doctor's granddaughter), played by Carole Ann Ford;
Barbara Wright, played by Jacqueline Hill; and
Ian Chesterton, played by William Russell.
2. Having landed on the planet, the crew splits up to go exploring. Which pair discovers a giant earthworm?

Answer: Barbara and the Doctor

Barbara and the Doctor head one way while Susan and Ian go another. Both pairs discover giant creatures that have died; Barbara and the Doctor find an earthworm and Susan and Ian find an ant.

When Ian and Susan also find an advertisement for 'Night Scented Stock' that's when they realize that they are, in fact, on Earth. At first Ian believes that it must just be some kind of exhibition, where everything has been made to a large scale, but Susan understands that it is, in fact, the opposite: they have been shrunk to about the size of an inch.
3. The Doctor and his companions realize that they are actually on Earth, and have somehow been miniaturized. Who gets trapped inside a matchbox when someone arrives and picks it up?

Answer: Ian

Not quite believing his eyes, Ian climbs into the matchbox when he and Susan discover it. He is sitting on the edge of the lid, discussing with Susan how they have become miniaturized when the ground begins shaking. Ian falls into the matchbox and the full-size man picks it up and continues on his way towards the nearby house.

When Susan emerges from her hiding place she is shocked to discover Ian missing, and frantically calls for Barbara and the Doctor.
4. The man who picked up the matchbox is a government scientist named Farrow, and he meets with an industrialist named Forester to discuss his product. What is DN6, the product Forester needs Farrow's approval to produce?

Answer: An insecticide

Farrow refuses to give his approval to Forester's insecticide, due to its indiscriminate killing power. It kills not only the undesirable insects, but also those that are beneficial to plant growth (like bees). The Doctor and his companions have encountered the effects of the insecticide, but they are unaware of what is happening with the perspectively giant men.

Farrow was played by Frank Crawshaw and Forester was played by Alan Tilvern.
5. Forester shoots Farrow when he refuses to give in and approve DN6. The Doctor and the others hear the gunshot like a giant cannon, but by the time they all reach the location and reunite, all they find is a dead man. While discussing their next move, a gigantic creature attacks them, forcing them to hide. What creature?

Answer: A cat

When the cat rushes at them, Barbara and Ian hide in Farrow's briefcase while Susan and the Doctor take refuge in a drainpipe. Unfortunately, when Forester returns with help (his DN6 developer, Smithers) to clean up the body and other evidence, the briefcase gets taken into the house, separating the four travelers once again.

Smithers was played by Reginald Barratt.
6. In the second episode, "Dangerous Journey", Ian and Barbara are taken into the house after hiding in Farrow's briefcase. They quickly realize that the house is, in fact, a laboratory. As they explore, do they come into direct contact with the DN6 chemical?

Answer: Yes

As Ian and Barbara explore, they come across a pile of wheat grain that has been treated with DN6. Ian goes on and on about how the laboratory must have developed the insecticide that killed the insects that they saw earlier outside, and how deadly it seems.

His observations are confirmed when a fly lands on the wheat and is killed instantly. Barbara, having touched the wheat without Ian realizing it, becomes more and more concerned about her own health. At one point, she faints. Did she faint from fright, or from the effects of the insecticide that she touched? Either way, Barbara doesn't tell Ian what happened to her.
7. Susan and the Doctor gain access to the laboratory by climbing up the drainpipe. They emerge from a drain at the bottom of a sink, and manage to make contact with Ian and Barbara, when suddenly Forester and his assistant Smithers return from removing Farrow's body. When Smithers goes to wash his hands in the sink, do Susan and the Doctor get washed down the drain back outside?

Answer: No

While washing his hands, Smithers puts the plug into the drain, allowing The Doctor and Susan time to take shelter in the overflow pipe. Thankfully, when Smithers pulls the stopper, the water drains out without affecting them. Once Smithers and Forester leave the room, Ian and Barbara climb down into the sink and reunite with Susan and The Doctor.
8. In his office, Forester telephones Whitehall pretending to be Farrow and declaring that the insecticide is wonderful, and that his report was on the way. The Minister with whom he speaks is tricked, but not the operator who connected the call (and listened in). What does she do about it?

Answer: She phones back, asking for Mr. Farrow, so as to confirm her suspicions.

The operator, Hilda Rowse, realizes immediately that the man claiming to be Farrow is not actually him, having heard Farrow's voice before. When she calls back to the house, Forester answers the phone. Hilda asks for Farrow, saying that there is a call coming for him from Whitehall. Forester tries his trick again, but Hilda realizes that it is actually Forester pretending to be Farrow.

As coincidence would have it, Hilda's husband Bert is a police constable, and he immediately decides to go check on Mr. Farrow in person.
9. The Doctor and his companions attempt to make use of the phone to call the police, but they are unable to make themselves understood with their tiny voices. What is their secondary plan?

Answer: To start a fire

As they are in a laboratory, the travelers make use of a gas line (for a burner), along with the matches from earlier to begin a fire. As luck would have it, the gas line spout happens to aim directly at a pressurized canister of insecticide. Ian and Barbara manage to strike a match (by running with it like a battering ram against the striking plate), and they get the fire going.
10. Smithers realizes how dangerous DN6 is and refuses to help Forester any more. Forester pulls his gun on Smithers and takes them both back into the laboratory. What happens next?

Answer: A canister explodes and Forester gets hit in the face.

Right after the explosion injures Forester, PC Rowse arrives to take him into custody. With the situation satisfactorily concluded, the Doctor, Susan, Barbara and Ian make their way back to the TARDIS with only one more thing to deal with: Barbara's exposure to the insecticide.

The Doctor quickly realizes the solution to the problem. Once he reverts the TARDIS back to its proper size, Barbara recovers. The dosage, which was very dangerous for a one-inch-tall human, was hardly noticeable on a full-sized human.
