Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the first episode, "The Lion", the TARDIS materializes in a wooded area. After emerging from their Police Box, the Doctor and his companions find themselves caught up in the midst of a fight between knights and Saracens. Which knight's life do they save?

Answer: William de Tornebu

The TARDIS has arrived in Palestine in the year 1190, in the midst of the Third Crusade. King Richard I (the Lionheart) is in the middle of a hunting expedition with some of his knights when they are ambushed by the El Akir, the Emir of Lydda, and his men. With orders to kill all save the king, when the Saracens capture William des Preaux, the knight claims to be King Richard, knowing that by doing so, the Saracens will take him as a prisoner.

Another knight, William de Tornebu, is struck by an arrow, falling to the ground in front of the Doctor and his companions. They pull him to safety while Ian takes up a fallen sword to fight the Saracen. While they are still fighting, de Tornebu throws his sword, impaling the Saracen handily.

The Doctor was played by William Hartnell, while his companions were played by William Russell (Ian Chesterton), Jacqueline Hill (Barbara Wright), and Maureen O'Brien (Vicki).

The role of King Richard was filled by Julian Glover, while the ambusher El Akir was played by Walter Randall. The two knights were played by Bruce Whightman (de Tornebu) and John Flint (des Preaux).
2. Barbara is captured by the Saracens, along with a knight who claims to be King Richard (to save his own life). What is the name of the Saracen Emir who captures them?

Answer: El Akir

El Akir, while a powerful Emir (of Lydda), is still sworn to follow Saladin in the fight against the Crusaders. He takes his two prisoners to Saladin's enclave to present them, fully expecting great honour for capturing (he believes) King Richard.

To keep up des Preaux's pretense, Barbara claims to be Princess Joanna, the sister of King Richard. Unfortunately for El Akir, when his two prisoners are presented to Saphadin (Saladin's brother), Saphadin immediately recognizes them for imposters. El Akir is shamed in front of Saphadin and departs in anger.
3. After acquiring appropriate clothing, Ian, Vicki (disguised as a boy) and the Doctor bring the injured knight to King Richard in Jaffa. With great gratitude, Richard immediately agrees to help the travelers retrieve Barbara from Saladin's clutches.

Answer: False

The first episode of the serial ends with King Richard adamantly refusing to entertain any thought of a trade with Saladin, not after so many of his friends had been killed in the fighting against him.

Saladin and Richard are both honourable foes, treating captured men with respect, so the king has no real concern over the welfare of William des Preaux. Women, however, have no real status in Saladin's eyes - except perhaps as source of entertainment or as part of his harem. Despite this argument, King Richard is unwilling to try to make a trade.
4. The second episode of "The Crusades" is entitled "The Knight of Jaffa". Who, exactly, IS the Knight of Jaffa?

Answer: Ian Chesterton

The Doctor begins the second episode with a well-reasoned argument that Saladin's embarrassment over the capture of des Preaux (pretending to be King Richard) will give an advantage to King Richard in any negotiations. Pleased with the Doctor's cleverness, Richard invites the Doctor to join his court, while at the same time awarding Ian with a knighthood for his bravery in the woods. Thus Ian is dubbed 'the Knight of Jaffa'.
5. In an effort to sue for peace, King Richard sends a Ian with a letter to Saladin that outlines an alliance of marriage with his brother Saphadin. Whose hand does he offer?

Answer: His sister Joanna's

Ian is chosen to bear the letter to Saladin by virtue of his neutrality on the subject. The King knows that someone of his own court may be too caught up in the hostilities to present a potential peace offering without bias.

Princess Joanna was played by Jean Marsh who, coincidentally, was married to Jon Pertwee (the future Third Doctor) from 1955 to 1960.
6. When Ian arrives with the letter to request the safe return of Barbara and the captured knight, he is told that Barbara has disappeared. What actually happened to her?

Answer: She was kidnapped

El Akir, embarrassed by Barbara and des Preaux, is unable to exact his revenge against the honoured knight... but a mere woman is certainly fair game. He makes an arrangement with a Genoan merchant named Luigi Ferrigo, offering him an appointment with Saladin (for potential commerce) in exchange for his help in spiriting Barbara out of the enclave.

Ferrigo easily dupes Barbara into thinking that he was sent by her friends, and he leads her down to the stables, where El Akir nabs her.

Fortunately for Barbara, Ferrigo makes a mistake, accidentally leaving a glove behind in her quarters. Presented with this evidence against him, Ferrigo admits to Saladin and Ian that Barbara has been taken by El Akir to Lydda.

Luigi Ferrigo was played by Gábor Baraker.
7. In the third episode, "The Wheel of Fortune", Ian is searching for Barbara when he encounters a difficulty. What?

Answer: He is waylaid by bandits

Ian is asleep when the bandits come upon him, and while Ian tries to fight back against what he thinks is only one thief, a second bandit knocks him unconscious.

The bandit Ibrahim was played by Tutte Lemkow, while his cohort was played by David Brewster.

In the meantime, Barbara manages to escape El Akir's soldiers and hides in the slums of Lydda, where she is taken in by Haroun ed-Din, a man who wants El Akir dead for destroying his family. Before the end of the episode, Barbara is recaptured and brought before El Akir, who decides to give her to his men to do with as they please.

Haroun ed-Din was portrayed by George Little.
8. At Jaffa, it is discovered that Vicki has been masquerading as a boy. What was the name she had been using?

Answer: Victor

After the Doctor is clothed in rich court clothing, the chamberlain indicates that he will also find rich clothing for 'Victor', to make 'him' a strutting peacock. After he leaves, Princess Joanna enters and hears Vicki complain about having to maintain the ruse. She then insists on Vicki being properly dressed as a lady of the court.

When Joanna learns what Vicki's real name is, she wonders at its origins, asking if it might be Venetian.

Further complications arise for the Doctor and Vicki when they are caught in the politics of the court, trying to keep the confidences of the king while still being true to Joanna, who does not know of her brother's plans.

It doesn't help that the Doctor (and Vicki) makes an enemy in the court - one who believes them to be false and tries to cause a rift between the two of them and the king.

The chamberlain was played by Robert Lankesheer while the Earl of Leicester was played by John Bay.
9. In the final episode, "The Warlords", the Doctor and Vicki know that more fighting is coming and decide to return to the TARDIS. The Earl of Leicester (the military advisor to King Richard) catches them trying to leave and accuses them of being Saracen spies. What penalty does he demand?

Answer: Their execution

With Princess Joanna's refusal to marry Saphadin, Richard must prepare for war. At the same time, Saladin is ready to accept the offer of peace through the wedding, but also prepares his army, just in case it falls through.

Knowing the history of the Third Crusade, the Doctor decides that now is the time to get back to the TARDIS. Unfortunately, his court rivalry with Leicester comes back to haunt him at just the wrong moment.
10. Ian succeeds in rescuing Barbara and brings her back to Jaffa just in time to prevent Leicester from taking Vicki and the Doctor into custody. The four travelers make it back to the TARDIS and they depart. Who sees them fade away?

Answer: Leicester and his men

Ian (as Sir Ian of Jaffa) stakes a prior claim on the Doctor, saying that he is guilty of killing some of his men. Ian says that he will carry out the execution, which allows the four travelers the opportunity to get away and safely reach the TARDIS.

Leicester and his men witness the TARDIS dematerialize and they believe that the brave Sir Ian of Jaffa has been spirited away by sorcerers. The men all agree to never speak of what they have seen, so as not to be branded as fools.
