Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a powerful scene in 'Genesis of the Daleks', the Doctor is faced with a moral dilemma - whether or not to blow up the Dalek incubating room, thus destroying the Daleks forever. "Do I have the right?" he asks, vacillating, as he holds two live wires in his hands. What ultimately prevents him from doing this?

Answer: The Kaled scientists tell him they have found a diplomatic solution

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view), the Kaleds believe that they can negotiate peace with Davros, and stop the Dalek experiements. The Doctor believes it, and is overjoyed to be freed from his dilemma. But Davros has other tricks up his sleeve...
2. In 'Terror of the Zygons', how do the Zygons spy on the humans at the local inn?

Answer: A mounted stag's head has a camera built in

The stag head was a gift to the landlord from the surly Duke of Forgill, who is really a Zygon. Sarah admires it, not noticing the gaze of the stag's eyes roaming about the room eerily, seeing everything. The Zygons do knock everyone out with gas, but that is so they can move their cyborg creature, the giant Skarasen, through the village unseen.

The secret passage to the Zygon ship leads from Forgill Castle, not from the inn.
3. In 'Pyramids of Mars', the Doctor dresses up as a mummy. Why?

Answer: To place gelignite on the rocket pad

Sutekh's rocket, constructed by mummies, is destined for Mars, so that the Eye of Horus, which is keeping him prisoner, might be destroyed. The Doctor and Sarah stop the rocket but Sutekh finds another way to get his agents to Mars - the TARDIS!
4. The marvellously wicked botanist, Harrison Chase, is the villain in 'The Seeds of Doom'. "The plants must win," he says. "It will be a new world. Silent and beautiful." How does he die at the end of the story?

Answer: He is mulched by his own compost machine

In the final struggle with Chase, the Doctor himself is almost mulched, but manages to get out while Chase is pulled in between the grinding teeth. No doubt a fitting end, but what a shame we saw no more of Chase.
5. The 'Robots of Death' has been likened to Murder on the Orient Express, with its opulent and claustrophobic setting, and its whodunit theme. It takes place on Storm Mine 4, stuck in the middle of 100 miles of uncharted desert, where, one at a time, crew members start turning up dead. Suspicion grows between those who remain, and accusations fly. Which of the following characters is never accused of murder?

Answer: Toos

So much more than a murder mystery, this story is an exquisitely detailed and compelling portrayal of a society whose dependence on robots has become an everyday reality. We watch as the crew are beset by growing fear when their robot servants turn on them, bickering and throwing allegations of all sorts at each other and at the two strangers, Leela and the Doctor, who have turned up out of nowhere. Only the reasonable and gracious Toos seems to avoid being drawn into the web of accusation and blame.
6. 'The Talons of Weng-Chiang' sees the Doctor turn Sherlock Holmes. While he is out investigating, Leela shows the amiable pathologist, Professor Litefoot, a new trick. What is it?

Answer: How to eat meat the Sevateem way

When the Doctor leaves them together at Litefoot's home, Leela sees the table full of food and immediately picks up a whole leg of lamb, gnawing at it straight off the bone. After initial surprise, Litefoot shrugs and joins her.
7. The Doctor takes Romana to the Louvre to view the Mona Lisa in 'City of Death'. What does Romana notice about the painting?

Answer: She hasn't got any eyebrows

The Doctor is appalled at this. "What, is that all you can say, no eyebrows? We're talking about the Mona Lisa!" When he looks closer though, he has to agree she's right. Romana is with Duggan, not the Doctor, later that night, when she discovers it has since been stolen from the Louvre.
8. In 'State of Decay', Camilla says that the Doctor has the most dangerous weapon of all. What is that?

Answer: Knowledge

The Doctor and Romana have managed to escape from the 'throne room' of the Tower, figuring out that it is really the bridge of a long-dormant scout ship. Of course, the robot dog with the laser gun proves almost as useful later on, when it shoots the guards who are protecting the Tower from incursion.
9. In 'Warriors' Gate', the TARDIS crew find themselves stranded in the middle of the Gateway - the domain of the Tharils. The Gateway is an almost empty continuum, with only an archway and mirror leading to another realm, and one other ship. That ship's hull is made of "dwarf star alloy". Which of the following is NOT connected with that fact?

Answer: The ship's back blast cannot penetrate the mirror

The ship is a slaver ship, and dwarf star alloy is the only material dense and strong enough to hold the leonine Tharil slaves within its walls. As a consequence, the ship is extraordinarily heavy, and its gravity is causing the collapse of this micro-universe.

The mirror is impenetrable to blasting, regardless of the make-up of the ship attempting to do so. It requires the finesse of the time-sensitive Tharils to cross it.
10. In 'Logopolis', whose hand does the Doctor shake?

Answer: The Master, who has just murdered three Logopolitans

Logopolis has been the only thing holding our universe back from total collapse due to increasing entropy. Unaware of this, the newly regenerated Master murders the Logopolitans, destroying the mathematical community and ending this critical endeavour. On finding out the severity of the situation, the Doctor and the Master enter into an uneasy alliance to prevent the collapse of space and time - an alliance which the Master eventually betrays, bringing an end to the Doctor's regeneration, and to this most remarkable era of Doctor Who. "One last hope", are the Doctor's resonant words at this disturbing moment.
