Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In episode one, "The Sea of Death", The Doctor and his companions arrive on an island in a sea of acid and find a fortified tower with one lone occupant. What is his name?

Answer: Arbitan

Arbitan is the Keeper of the Conscience of Marinus, a device that controls the minds of the inhabitants of the planet by taking away any desire to do evil things. For two millennia peace has been enforced, but in recent years a faction called the Voord has managed to throw off the control enough to launch an attack against the island, to try to take over the Conscience.

The Keys were made to prevent the Voord from being able to control the Conscience in the event that they captured the tower.
2. The Keeper requires that the Keys that control the Conscience (hidden around the globe) be retrieved so that its new program can be activated and pacify the Voord fighting its control. As he is alone, he forces the four travellers to undertake the quest by holding the TARDIS hostage. How many Keys must they find?

Answer: Four

As part of its composition, the Conscience (it's basically a computer) has five microcircuits (Keys). Arbitan had one with him, part of the apparatus that houses the Conscience, but the other four were hidden around the globe in various spots to prevent the Voord from being able to take control of the device.

The leader of the Voord, Yartek, continues to send his followers to attack, and even if they cannot gain control of the device, they will have free reign to do as they please. Arbitan, though, has programmed the Conscience to also pacify the Voord. With the Keys returned, control would be restored.

As the travellers depart for on the quest, viewers witness one of the Voord attack and kill Arbitan.
3. The travellers begin their quest to recover the Keys in the second episode, "The Velvet Web". Arriving by means of teleporting to the city of Morphoton, an ideal paradise, it is soon revealed to be illusion. Who is the first to see the truth?

Answer: Barbara Wright

The four travellers are treated to the finest foods and their desires fulfilled, yet as they take their rest the viewers see a woman walk among them, placing a disc on their foreheads. In her sleep, Barbara shifts around and the device falls off. When she wakes, she is able to see that instead of a paradise, everything is in fact filthy and ragged. She runs away from their host when she sees that they know she is no longer under their spell.

Barbara finds Sabetha, Arbitan's daughter, with one of the Keys. With her help, Barbara escapes capture and manages to attack and destroy the creatures behind the illusion - large brains with eyestalks.

The Doctor's companions were played by Carole Ann Ford (Susan Foreman), William Russell (Ian Chesterton), and Jacqueline Hill (Barbara Wright).
4. After defeating the Brains of Morphoton, The Doctor and his companions travel together to the city of Millennius to search for the next Key.

Answer: False

Joined by Sabetha and Altos (another who had been sent by Arbitan to find the Keys), Barbara, Ian and Susan go to the location of the second Key, while The Doctor goes on by himself to the location of the fourth Key (the city of Millennius). The third episode, entitled "The Screaming Jungle", follows the group five as they find an ancient temple filled with traps and aggressive jungle vines.

Barbara finds what she thinks is the Key, but it turns out to be a decoy, and she is drawn into the temple and is separated from the others. Believing that she may have transported on to the location of the next Key, Susan, Sabetha and Altos continue on to that location, while Ian stays behind to search for the true second Key.
5. What is the name of the old scientist and friend of the Keeper who Ian and Barbara find in possession of one of the Keys?

Answer: Darrius

Darrius established the temple and all it's traps as a defense against the Voord from finding the Key in his safekeeping. As the scientist lies dying (he was attacked by a jungle vine) he gives a cryptic clue as to the Key's location: D-E-3-O-2. After searching and reading Darrius' notes, they eventually find the Key hidden in an experiment jar.

They manage to escape just as the (now screaming) jungle begins to overrun the temple.
6. In the fourth episode, "The Snows of Terror", the travellers face a treacherous trapper named Vasor who steals their Keys and leaves them all in various states of peril. Who kills Vasor as they escape?

Answer: None of them

Vasor stole the Keys from Sabetha (hers and the decoy one found in the temple) and left them to die in some ice caves while sending Altos out into the wastelands with his hands bound and with a bag of raw meat to attract the wolves. When Barbara and Ian arrive, Vasor spins a tale and sends Ian back out into the cold to find Altos (locking the door behind him).

Ian finds Altos, saves him, and together they rescue Barbara from Vasor. They then force Vasor to take them to the ice caves where they are reunited with Susan and Sabetha. Unfortunately, Vasor escapes their captivity, destroying a rope bridge over a chasm they had crossed in the process, leaving them trapped.

They find the Key trapped within a block of ice and protected by Ice Soldiers. A makeshift bridge over the chasm lets them escape back to Vasor's cabin where they need to reclaim their travel dials. Vasor tries to take Susan hostage again, but he is killed by one of the Ice Soldiers and the questors escape to the location of the fourth Key.
7. Eprin, another friend of the Keeper's who had been sent to find the Keys and had never returned, is discovered murdered. Which of the travellers is accused of his murder?

Answer: Ian Chesterton

After escaping Vasor and the Ice Soldiers, the five questors jump to Millennius. Somehow, Ian jumps to a different location, finding himself in a vault, standing over Eprin's body. In a glass case nearby he sees the last Key, which Eprin had also just found. Suddenly, Ian is struck from behind by Eprin's murderer and viewers see him steal the Key and place the murder weapon in Ian's hand.

This scene begins the fifth episode, "Sentence of Death".
8. The laws of Millennius assume guilt, unless the accused can prove their innocence. The sentence of death is pronounced, but time is given for the defendant's counsel to build their defence. Who is the counsel for the defence?

Answer: The Doctor

Aydan is the relief guard who discovered Ian and murdered Eprin. In the court The Doctor tricks him into revealing himself, but not before implicating that he was not working alone. Before he can name his accomplices, though, Aydan is killed. The court continues to believe that Ian is still guilty.

Aydan was actually killed by his wife Kala, who also takes Susan hostage. The travellers rescue her before Kala can harm her, and convince Tarron (the Chief Investigator of the City) of her complicity AND that someone else was behind the actions of both Aydan and Kala.

Eyesen is the Court Prosecutor, and the real mastermind behind Eprin's murder and the theft of the Key. The Doctor proves it all in front of the tribunal, earning Ian his freedom.
9. Altos and Sabetha return to the Keeper with all but the last Key (which the others are still in the process if retrieving) only to discover that the Keeper has been replaced by Yartek, the leader of the Voord. Which of them does he kill?

Answer: Neither of them

Arbitan was killed at the end of the first episode and now Yartek is in control of the tower and the Conscience. Yartek tries to force the location of the last Key from Sabetha by threatening Altos with death, but she feigns disinterest in his fate. When Yartek in turn threatens to kill Sabetha, Altos reveals that The Doctor has the Key. Yartek lays a trap for the others, pretending to be Arbitan.
10. Yartek, pretending to be the Keeper, feigns having a disease to keep Ian and Barbara from approaching him too closely. Does he fool them into giving him the final Key?

Answer: No

Ian sees through Yartek's subterfuge, and fools the imposter in return by giving him the decoy Key found in the jungle temple. Ian tells the others what he has done and they proceed to rescue Sabetha and Altos and flee before Yartek tries to insert the last (fake) Key into the Conscience. When he does so, sure in his victory, he instead causes a gigantic explosion.

The last episode was entitled "The Keys of Marinus".
