Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Doctor (William Hartnell) has which relative of his travelling with him when the series first begins?

Answer: Granddaughter

In the very first episode 'An Unearthly Child,' we see the Doctor's granddaughter Susan, attending a local school.
There is much discussion amongst fans regarding whether Susan is indeed the biological granddaughter of the Doctor, or whether they just enjoy pretending that it's the case.
2. Where do the first Doctor and his companions often find themselves?

Answer: Earths history

There were a lot of purely historical stories made during this era of the show (1963-1966), with the TARDIS team meeting many historical figures such as Marco Polo, Emperor Nero, and Saladin.
3. What instrument does the second Doctor play?

Answer: Recorder

No one is awfully thrilled when he starts tooting on it, however.
4. In 'The Three Doctors,' what words does the first Doctor use to describe the second and third (Jon Pertwee) Doctors?

Answer: A dandy and a clown

He says this disapprovingly from the TARDIS monitor.
Unfortunately Hartnell was ill by the time this tenth anniversary special came around, and was limited to a few scenes where he is reading from cue cards.
5. The third Doctor spends much of his time on Earth, acting as Scientific Adviser for which military organisation?

Answer: UNIT

UNIT stands for United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, whose job is to investigate the supernatural, and to combat any threat to the world from alien life.
The Doctor gradually becomes very fond of his comrades at UNIT, particularly the commanding officer, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stuart.
6. What is the affectionate name that the third Doctor has for his vintage roadster?

Answer: Bessie

The distinctive yellow roadster is faster then it looks, and has 'WHO 1' on its (or should I say her) license plate.
7. The fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) makes his debut in which of the following stories?

Answer: Robot

He regenerates in UNIT HQ, with Sarah Jane Smith (his companion), and the Brigadier, looking on.
Robot was first transmitted in 1975.
8. What is the fourth Doctor particularly fond of handing out to people?

Answer: Jelly babies

He also enjoys playing around with his yo-yo, and the many other things he carries around with him in his capacious pockets.
9. The fifth Doctor (Peter Davison), is dressed up to play what sport?

Answer: Cricket

He gets to show off his skills in 'Black Orchid' (1982).
He is also known for the wearing of a stick of celery on his lapel.
10. Which of the following people is NOT a companion to the fifth Doctor?

Answer: Romana

Romana leaves not long before the fourth Doctor's regeneration.
The fifth Doctor had more than enough company of his own in the TARDIS though, that's for sure!
11. The sixth Doctor (Colin Baker), wears badges on his lapels in the form of what animal?

Answer: Cat

To go with his notoriously bright outfit.
12. Immediately after he has just regenerated into his sixth persona, the Doctor describes his companion Peri as what type of young lady?

Answer: Egotistical

This is in 'Caves of Androzani' (1984).
Peri is understandably flabbergasted after watching the familiar features of the Doctor explode in a blaze of light, and what appears to be a stranger appear in his place.
Her first reaction is a stuttered "I - I - I," to which the new Doctor drily replies with "Three I's in one breath makes you a rather egotistical young lady!"
13. The seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy), speaks with what distinctive accent?

Answer: Scottish

That's because he was born in Dunoon, in Scotland, in 1943.
14. The seventh Doctor's companion Ace addresses him as what?

Answer: Professor

Part of her 80's street-cred charm.
15. Which Doctor returned to the series the most times to reprise their role?

Answer: Patrick Troughton

Firstly in the previously mentioned 'The Three Doctors,' then in the 20th anniversary special 'The Five Doctors' (1983), and finally he combined with Colin Baker in 'The Two Doctors' in 1984, just two years before his died at the age of 67.
