In history, Yemelyan Pugachev, claiming to be Catherine's late husband, led an insurrection during her reign. This story is told by Alexander Pushkin in "The History of Pugachev" and his 1836 novel "The Captain's Daughter."
2. Catherine's bureaucratic advisor who helps her lead a coup to overthrow Peter III

Answer: Count Orlo

Count Orlo is played by Sacha Dhawan. The character is very loosely based on Prince Grigory Grigoryevich Orlov who led the coup overthorwing Catherine's husband Peter III and who essentially co-ruled with her until his fall from power. He suffered from mental illness and had a complete mental collapse prior to his death in 1783.
3. Peter III's best friend

Answer: Grigor

Georgiana is a clever and scheming woman who manipulates Peter but also seems to have a genuine fondness for him. She is the wife of Grigor and for a time orchestrates her own banishment from court to avoid trouble. Called George by Peter, she is played by the actress Charity Wakefield.
6. The general who helps Catherine lead a coup against Peter

Answer: Velementov

General Velementov is played by Douglas Hodge. Peter often ridicules him for his weight, and he eventually joins Catherine in her coup. He finds his life has little meaning when he is not at war, and he is often encouraging Catherine to fight their enemies, including the Ottomans.

Peter's strange aunt has an eccentric personality and trains butterflies. She murders the boy Ivan to secure Catherine's claim to the throne when Peter is ill. Aunt Elizabeth is played by Belinda Bromilow.
8. Catherine's lover, a gift from Peter

Answer: Leo Voronsky

Played by Sebastian de Souza, the romantic Leo Voronsky is given to Catherine by Peter to be her lover. Catherine is initially reluctant, but eventually falls in love with the young man, who joins her in her coup. He is, however, eventually killed by Peter.
9. The court's doctor

Answer: Chekov

Played by Jamie Demetriou the court's creepy doctor Chekov invents the forceps and engages in a variety of questionable medical practices while also frowning on Aunt Elizabeth's old-wives-tale-style practices. "The Great" is a British-American comedy-drama that began streaming on Hulu on May 15, 2020.
10. Catherine's former servant and close friend

Answer: Marial

Marial, played by Phoebe Fox, is a former noblewoman who is demoted to the role of servant because of the sick actions of her father.
