Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alice wants to hide Ralph's gift. Where does she put it before Ralph finds it?

Answer: Under the icebox

First Alice goes for the bureau drawer, then the oven, and finally decides on hiding it under the icebox. Unfortunately, Ralph chooses the same place to hide Alice's gift. Alice comes in from the bedroom and catches Ralph just as he is putting the drip pan back under the icebox.

He admits hiding her gift, and Alice admits his is there as well. He asks what his gift is, but Alice insists he wait until Christmas morning to find out, and decides to move Ralph's gift to the closet shelf behind a hatbox.
2. What booby trap does Alice set in case Ralph finds his present?

Answer: A mousetrap

Alice was going to leave Ralph's gift under the icebox after Ralph insisted he could wait until Christmas morning. Alice tells Ralph to wash up and says she is going upstairs to see Trixie. Ralph goes into the bedroom, and Alice pretends to leave. The minute Ralph hears the door slam, he runs back into the kitchen and pulls out his gift. Alice says, "I guess Mommy'll just have to hide your present someplace else.

It looks like I can't trust you, Ralph." Ralph replies, "I can't be trusted? You're the one who said you were going upstairs!" Alice then hides Ralph's gift in the bedroom closet and sets the mousetrap.

The minute she leaves to take a couple of onions up to Trixie, guess who gets his fingers caught in the trap!
3. What does Ed buy Ralph for Christmas?

Answer: Spats

Ralph gives Ed a tie. The boxes look identical, so Ralph assumes Ed also bought a tie. Ralph says, "Well, anyway, I know it came from your heart." Ed replies, "No it didn't, it came from the Fat Man Shop!"
4. What does Ralph buy Alice?

Answer: A hairpin box

Ralph buys Alice a hairpin box made of 2,000 matchsticks glued together. Ralph was cheated by the salesman into believing the box was originally owned by the Emperor of Japan and was smuggled into the United States. Sadly, Alice's friend, Mrs. Stevens, gives Alice the same identical gift!
5. Please finish Ed's quote to Ralph: "Compared to you, _____ was a holiday playboy!"

Answer: Scrooge

Ralph is of course upset that he no longer has a gift for Alice. Ed is merrily throwing tinsel on the tree and singing "Deck The Halls". Ralph slams his hand on the table and angrily says, "Will you stop that?" Ed says, "What's the matter with you, anyway? Geez, what a grouch!" Then he says the line about Scrooge.
6. Ralph and Alice receive a gift certificate as a gift. Who is it from?

Answer: Alice's Uncle Leo

Uncle Leo stops by to wish them a Merry Christmas and gives Ralph the certificate. Alice isn't home, so Ralph gets the idea that he can use the certificate to buy Alice another present, but she comes in just after Uncle Leo leaves. She asks Ralph to guess who she just saw downstairs. Ralph of course assumes she's speaking of Uncle Leo and says so. Alice answers that it wasn't Uncle Leo she saw, it was Tommy Mullins home on leave from the Navy. Ralph ends up showing her the certificate from Uncle Leo.
7. Ralph had twenty-two dollars saved, but spent it on something else. What does he buy?

Answer: A new bowling ball

Ralph is very ashamed of himself for spending the money on a bowling ball. "Always thinking of myself. I could've bought Alice a beautiful present with that twenty-two bucks."
8. How does Ralph get money to buy Alice another gift?

Answer: He pawns the bowling ball

Ralph decides to pawn his bowling ball. He figures he can get ten to fifteen dollars for it. He tells Ed, "Just remember, in an emergency, I come out of it. When they made me, they threw away the mold!" Ed answers, "They had to, you probably broke it!"
9. What second gift does Ralph buy Alice?

Answer: An orange juice squeezer

Ralph buys the same orange juice squeezer that Ed bought for Trixie. It's a statue of Napoleon. You squeeze the orange on his head, and juice squirts out of his ears! Of course, Alice loves it because it came from Ralph.
10. What does Alice buy for Ralph?

Answer: A bag for his bowling ball

This kind of reminds me of the O. Henry story "The Gift of the Magi". Ralph opens his gift first. When he sees the bag, he is over-whelmed. Jackie Gleason messed up his line here. He says, "A bowling bag ball! I mean, a bowling ball bag!" Alice asks him to get the ball to be sure it fits into the bag. Ralph hems and haws, and finally admits that he pawned the ball to get Alice her gift (and everything else that happened as well!).
