Father Gabriel works as a priest both before and after the apocalypse, and he sees to the building of a new church in Alexandria. He is taken captive by the Saviors and forced to work at Eugene's outpost, the bullet factory. While he eventually becomes head of the Alexandrian Council and a de-facto leader of Alexandria, he never served on the prison council because he was never part of the prison camp.

Father Gabriel is an Episcopalian priest who was the priest at St. Sarah's Episcopal Church when the apocalypse began. There, he befriended a female organist and organized food drives. He lived off of the food for months, but when supplies began to run out, he started venturing outside to scavenge.

In one such scavenging attempt, he became stuck atop a rock as a walker grasped for him, and that was when Rick's group encountered him.

Father Gabriel committed the grave sin of locking his own parishioners outside of the church. They begged to be let in, but afraid the supplies would run out, he left them to be devoured by walkers. Someone wrote the words, possibly in blood, before dying. This sin haunts him as he grows and develops in "The Walking Dead."

Father Gabriel developed an infection, which attacked his optical nerves. By season 9, he had gone blind in his right eye, which turned a milky white. It's hinted that Father Gabriel got the infection from the walker guts with which he covered himself to escape Negan's trailer.

When they did it, Negan asked, "Haven't any of your people gotten sick doing this?" The trick has been carried out numerous times on "The Walking Dead," but Father Gabriel was the first to become sick from it.

Eugene helps them to escape. In "Dead or Alive Or," the car in which they escape breaks down. Dr. Carson and Father Gabriel are tracked down by the Saviors, and in a scuffle with them, Dr. Harlan Carson is killed. Gabriel is recaptured and returned to the Sanctuary.

As head of The Scavengers, Anne went by the name of Jadis. After the War with the Saviors, during which Simon killed all her people, she was invited to join Rick's group. In season 9, episode 2, Father Gabriel and Anne, who have begun to form a bond, share a kiss. Eventually, however, they have a falling out when Anne admits she's been trading people and tries to get him to leave with her.

She considers feeding him to a walker, but decides not to and instead leaves him a note and disappears.

Rosita was fooling around with Alexandria's doctor Siddiq, but she eventually developed a romantic relationship with Father Gabriel. Dante posed as a survivor stumbling upon the gates of Alexandria, where he soon put his medical skills to use helping Siddiq. Before Dante's fate can be decided by the council, Father Gabriel visits him in his cell and stabs him to death in rage.
