Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of "Turn Left," what did the planet the Doctor and Donna Noble landed on look like?

Answer: Chinese market

The Doctor and Donna are on the planet of Shan Shen, which resembles a Chinese marketplace. They visited a snowy planet in "Planet of the Ood" and ancient Pompeii (on Volcano Day) in "The Fires of Pompeii." Donna visits a fortune teller, who makes one minor change in Donna's personal history. The rest of the episode is set on Earth, and focuses on the implications of that minor change.
2. What kind of creature was attached to Donna's back?

Answer: Beetle

The monster on Donna's back looks like a large beetle. While the beetle is generally invisible, people do occasionally sense something on Donna's back. She was almost shot when a soldier saw the beetle. The beetle is used to shift time-space around Donna.
3. Near the start of "Turn Left," the Doctor dies. What creature was he fighting when he was killed?

Answer: The Racnoss

The Doctor fought the Racnoss, a spider-like race, underneath the Thames River. He drowned them. In the original time-line, Donna was able to convince him to leave. In the new time-line, the Doctor is drowned before he is able to regenerate. The Judoon are a rhino-like species that serves as law enforcement officers.

They appear in "Smith and Jones" tracking a fugitive alien on the Moon. The Daleks are one of the Doctor's oldest enemies. Virtually every version of the Doctor has fought the Daleks.

The Cybermen are also a long-time enemy of the Doctor. He fought both in "Doomsday," which introduced Catherine Tate as Donna Noble.
4. With the Doctor absent, which of the Doctor's companions had to save Royal Hope Hospital from the Plasmavore in the episode "Turn Left"?

Answer: Sarah Jane Smith

Sarah Jane Smith, who had her own spin-off show with "The Sara Jane Adventures" reportedly stopped the Plasmavore from killing half the people on Earth. Unfortunately, she died along with Martha Jones before the hospital could be returned to Earth.
Rose Tyler makes several appearances in "Turn Left" and helps Donna travel in time to set the timeline back to its original state. Astrid was killed in "Voyage of the Damned" when she killed Max Capricorn; presumably she would have been killed when the ship crashed in the alternate timeline.
5. Several disasters happened in the wake of the Doctor's death. What is NOT one of the things that happened as a result of the Doctor's absence?

Answer: The Master took over the world

The Master only returned to Earth because the Doctor traveled to the end of time and gave him the means to return. With the Doctor dead, the Master would have been stuck in the middle of nowhere as the stars dwindled down.
In "Turn Left," the Doctor is not around to prevent the crash of the spaceship Titanic, so it destroys London. With London destroyed, the Adipose moved to the United States, where they killed millions of people. And to end the ATMOS crisis, the Torchwood team dies blowing up the Sontaran spaceship.
6. What city in northern England are Donna and her family sent to?

Answer: Leeds

Leeds is one of the largest cities in England, and is the cultural and financial center of West Yorkshire. The Nobles are sent there after London is destroyed. Donna argues with the Social Services woman about being sent there. Once there, the Nobles share a house with two large extended families.
The Leeds scenes were filmed in Penarth, a suburb of Cardiff, Wales. Much of the primary filming for "Doctor Who" has been done in the Cardiff area. The Nobles are put in house #29.
7. When they are arguing in the car, what job does Donna's mother want her to take?

Answer: Secretary

Donna's mother suggests that she get a job as a secretary with Jival Chowdry. In the alternate time-line, Donna takes the secretarial job, but ultimately winds up getting fired. In the original time-line, she got a job at H.C. Clements, where she met her fiancé, who was secretly an agent for the alien Racnoss. It was the encounter with the Racnoss that first led Donna to meet the Doctor ("The Runaway Bride").
8. Donna is able to run and catch herself before she makes the turn.

Answer: False

Donna lands in Sutton Court, half a mile away from where she is in the car with her mother. It is 9:57 and she needs to be there at 10:01. Donna runs as fast as she can, but realizes she will never make it. She sacrifices herself by stepping in front on a truck. This creates a traffic jam, which leads the other Donna to turn in the opposite direction. This shift back to the original time-line kills the beetle on Donna's back.
9. What two words does Rose Tyler whisper to Donna, as a message to the Doctor?

Answer: Bad Wolf

"Bad Wolf" formed the theme for the entire first season of the rebooted "Doctor Who." It led Rose to rescue the Doctor at a space station by channeling the time vortex. The words were a warning to the Doctor that the universe was in serious danger. The Doctor and Donna deal with that crisis in the next two episodes - "The Stolen Earth" and "Journey's End."
10. Who did the Doctor say was behind the effort to change the timeline?

Answer: The Trickster's Brigade

The Trickster is a being that feeds off the energy created when time changes. It goes around changing people's histories to feed off their energy. Most of the time this has little impact, but on some occasions, as with Donna Noble, it can create parallel realities.

The Trickster can been seen in several episodes of "The Sarah Jane Adventures," including "Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?" The beetles are known as time beetles and act as agents for the Trickster. While Harold Saxon was on Earth by the time of most of the events in "Turn Left," for quite a while the Doctor was unaware that it was his old nemesis, the Master.

The Silence are first seen in "The Impossible Astronaut." And while the Weeping Angels feed off time energy, it is potential energy, not changed time energy, that they seek.
