Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ed Wynn stars in this poignant episode from season one. Mr. Bookman bargains with Death for the gift of immortality. However, an innocent girl must die in his place. What is the seraphic title of this episode?

Answer: "One for the Angels"

In this second episode from the first season of the original "Twilight Zone," Bookman is seen selling his robots in the first scene. Death is observing. Mr. Death tells Mr. Bookman that the departure time is at twelve midnight. Mr. Bookman makes a deal with Death to elude his fate. Mr. Bookman's deal with Mr. Death has unforeseen consequences.

In order to prevent Mr. Death from claiming the little girl, Bookman sacrifices himself to save her life. Bookman makes a final sales pitch that prevents Mr. Death from meeting his scheduled appointment.
2. "Time Enough at Last" is the eighth episode from the first season. Henry Beamis (Burgess Meredith) longs to have enough time to pursue his passion. This episode first aired in 1959. What is this passion?

Answer: reading books

Mr. Beamis is the ultimate bibliophile. His great passion for reading books is thwarted by his boss at the bank and scorned by his wife. Suddenly, Beamis finds himself to be the apparent sole survivor of a global nuclear devastation. Now, Beamis appears to have all the time in the world to pursue his passion for reading books.

In the event that you have not seen this episode or do not know the story, I won't spoil the ending for you.
3. In one of the more humorous episodes from the second season, "Mr. Dingle, the Strong," Martians give Mr. Dingle the power of super-human strength. What power do the Venusians give Mr. Dingle?

Answer: supremely enhanced intelligence

Burgess Meredith stars as the meek and mild Mr. Dingle. In an experiment, the Martians endow Mr. Dingle with extraordinary strength. Disappointed with Mr. Dingle's usage of the power, the Martians withdraw the power at an inopportune moment. The Venusians arrive and give Mr. Dingle supreme intelligence. Don Rickles also appeared in this episode as a thorn in Mr. Dingle's side.
4. This episode from the second season is entitled, "The Invaders." It is a riveting visual experience with little dialog in the episode. The episode ends with a wry twist. From which planet have the "invaders" arrived?

Answer: Earth

An elderly woman portrayed by Agnes Moorehead is beset with what appears to be an attack by robotic figures. The only dialog in the episode occurs near the end. Having dispatched most of the intruders, an image of the spacecraft is shown. It reads, "U.S. Air Force, Space Probe No. 1."
5. Many pundits consider this episode to be the "magnus opus" of "Twilight Zone" episodes. It stars Billy Mumy as the practically omnipotent being who terrifies everybody in a small town. Which adjective completes the title of this episode: "It's a ______ Life"?

Answer: Good

"It's a Good Life" is based upon the short story written by Jerome Bixby. The mysterious protagonist, Anthony Fremont, is portrayed by Billy Mumy in the original series. Anthony regularly dispatched his detractors into the cornfield from which there is no return. It was very important to laud Anthony's behavior with the phrase, "It's a good thing."
6. In an episode from the third season, the Kanamits have arrived on Earth. A representative for the Kanamits declares, "We are here to help you." The Kanamits have provided a book in their own language. What kind of book is it?

Answer: It's a cookbook.

The title of this episode is, "To Serve Man." From a linguistic point of view, it is interesting how the verb, "to serve" may be misinterpreted. The character of Patty is a cryptographer who manages to decipher the true intent of the book. As her boss boards the ship to the Kanamit planet, Patty declares, "Mr. Chambers. Don't get on that ship.

The rest of the book, "To Serve Man" ... It's ... It's a cookbook." This is followed by appropriately eerie music.
7. A desperate man is driven to the verge of suicide due to the impending failure of his business. An intervention by a mysterious character helps turn the business around, but there is a cost. The name of the episode is, "The Printer's Devil." What kind of business is it?

Answer: newspaper publishing

The character Douglas Winter (Robert Sterling) is beset by greater competition from a large publisher with deep pockets. Winter's best employee resigns and leaves Winter with little hope. Motivated by drink, Winter drives to a bridge with the intention of committing suicide. Mr. Smith (Burgess Meredith) arrives with a plan to save the newspaper. Later, it is revealed that Mr. Smith is the Devil and demands Winter's soul in exchange for the success of the newspaper.
8. "Meet Mr. George P. Hanley, a man life treats without deference, honor or success." Mr. Hanley enters a shop only to be pressured into buying an antique lamp. This lamp turns out to be special though, and he is granted one wish. What is his wish?

Answer: to become the genie of the lamp

The name of this episode from the fourth season is entitled, "I Dream of Genie." It is quite hilarious. After dutifully rubbing the magic lamp, a somewhat sarcastic and brusque genie appears. George solicits advice from the genie. After some pondering and reflection, George rejects wealth, love and power.

In summary, Rod Serling narrates, "Mr. George P. Hanley, former vocation, jerk. Present vocation, genie." Mr. Hanley has found an extraordinary wish for an ordinary person.
9. From the fifth season of the series, this epic episode starred Lee Marvin as a boxing promoter. Boxing between humans has been outlawed. A 2011 film was also based on the original Matheson short story. What is the metallic name of this episode?

Answer: "Steel"

Steel Kelly (Lee Marvin) is a former boxer who has turned into a boxing promoter since boxing between humans has become illegal. Just before the scheduled fight, Kelly's boxing android falls apart. Desperate for cash, Kelly disguises himself as an android competitor. Kelly is nearly killed in the bout but manages to stay in the ring long enough to garner some of the proceeds and stay in business.
10. From the fifth season, this post-apocalyptic tale features James Coburn as Major French. Food and resources are scarce and the few remaining inhabitants rely on the advice from a mysterious entity residing in a cave. What is the entity in the cave?

Answer: a computer

The instructions from the computer have been correct and clear. Only Mr. Goldsmith (John Anderson) remains adherent to the advice set down by the computer in the cave. In desperation, the population of the town align with Major French. They go to the cave and discover that it is nothing more than a computer.

In frustration, the people of the town destroy the computer. As it turns out, the computer is dispensing accurate advice about the contaminated food. Ultimately, everyone dies from eating the contaminated food with the sole exception of Mr. Goldsmith.
