Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What shape did Irving Thalbro find in his bed made of dirt?

Answer: body

He bent to brush the dirt out of the bed, but only succeeded in smearing it. When he stood and turned around, he found himself confronted by Mr. Peattie. When Dr. Wieder heard the alarm beep, he noticed the downstairs motion sensor had been tripped and went down to check on it. He found Irving hanging in the foyer with his throat cut and the word "Theef" written in blood on the wall.
2. What did Mr. Peattie tell his landlady was the source of the smell in his room?

Answer: medicine

She knocked on his door to remind him that he wasn't allowed to cook in his room. He replied, "That smell like something you want to eat?" and told her it was medicine. He also told her that he was fixing a poultice for her back pain.
3. Irving's autopsy showed he had Kuru, a condition that New Guinea tribesmen got from eating what?

Answer: brains

The rare disease had been found among New Guinea tribesmen, who'd contracted it by eating the brains of their relatives. Scully and Mulder were thus understandably perplexed to find the disease in Irving, and Mulder concluded that someone had directed the disease into Irving so that he'd go mad and kill himself.
4. What did Peattie sew inside the doll that he used against Nan Wieder?

Answer: photograph

According to the proprietor at a mystic and herbal shop Scully and Mulder later visited, one would sew "three thorns of a blood red rose, a strand of hair and a photo of your victim" into a poppet in order to direct specific illnesses to a person. Peattie had taken a photo off the Wieder wall and sewn a cut-out of Nan's head inside the poppet.

He then used it to give her a rare disease only found in central Africa.
5. Under what name had Lynette Peattie been treated?

Answer: Jane Doe

Dr. Wieder did not at first remember Lynette Peattie, and he couldn't find any record of her ever having been one of his patients. When he looked at the Jane Does, though, he found one whose file included a small fabric strip with lettering reading "Flax-hair lamb.

TheeF of mine heart." Wieder realized that he had treated Peattie's daughter, and had been involved in her death, though it he had only acted in what he considered her best interests.
6. What did Peattie buy from the vending machine at the hospital?

Answer: popcorn

He bought the popcorn and then put it in the microwave, which gave him the really horrific idea of putting Nan Wieder's poppet in the microwave. He did so, and while she was getting her routine MRI, she was essentially baked to a crisp!
7. What did the landlady find in Peattie's bed?

Answer: corpse

She pulled back the sheet, thinking it was Peattie, and found the decomposed corpse of his daughter. She turned in surprise and found herself face to face with Peattie. Later, Mulder saw a news story about the landlady having contracted the rare "flesh-eating disease." He realized that Peattie had directed the disease at her and correctly surmised that she was his landlady and went to the building to look for evidence.
8. What did Peattie use to make the poppet of Scully?

Answer: badge photo

Peattie followed Scully to the cabin and broke into her car, stealing her FBI badge. He used the photo off the badge to make a poppet, into whose eyes he stuck pins. No longer able to see, Scully could hardly defend Dr. Wieder and Lucy. When Peattie entered the cabin, Scully got off a few shots, but then Peattie easily disarmed her.
9. In the cabin, Peattie used a poppet to harm Lucy.

Answer: false

It seemed his intention was to systematically hurt Dr. Wieder's family, coming finally to killing his daughter, just as Wieder had killed his daughter Lynette. However, when it came down to it, Peattie stuck his knife into the poppet and it actually hurt Dr. Wieder himself! It seemed he was having a heart attack and Lucy screamed as she looked on helplessly.
10. Who shot Peattie?

Answer: Scully

Outside the cabin, Mulder found the poppet with nails in the eyes. He pulled the nails out, effectively restoring Scully's eyesight, so she was able to grab her gun and shoot Peattie before he had killed Dr. Wieder.
