An Adventure Seen in "Black" and "White": Part 1 Quiz

Being the games that re-introduced me to the "Pokémon" video game series, I thought it would be fitting to write a quiz detailing the main character's journey. Part 1 covers the beginning through to the sixth gym. These games are for the Nintendo DS.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting your journey, you are given your first Pokémon by Professor Juniper. Which of these is NOT an available choice?

Answer: Axew

As in all previous Pokémon adventure games, you can choose between a Grass, Fire or Water type pokémon to be your starter. In Black and White, Snivy is the grass-type, Tepig is the fire-type and Oshawott is the water-type. Axew is a Dragon-type pokémon encountered later on, in the wild.
2. After receiving your starter Pokémon from Professor Juniper, you are challenged to battles from your two rivals, Bianca and Cheren, who take the other two starters. Is it true that Bianca takes the starter that is type-dominant to yours (eg, Fire against Grass is dominant)?

Answer: No

She takes the Pokémon with a type weakness to yours, while Cheren takes the type-dominant starter. Interestingly, this represents the first time in the series where the player has multiple rivals who each a given a Proper starter, as the second rival in versions "Ruby", "Sapphire" and "Emerald", Wally, started with a wild Pokémon he captured.
3. After defeating both of your rivals for the first time, it's time to leave home and properly begin your journey. The first new place that you visit is Accumula Town. Here, amongst other things, you battle the mysterious man called N for the first time. However, he currently only has a single Pokémon; what is it?

Answer: Purrloin

His Purrloin is at level 7. This is the first of five occasions you will fight him during the game.
4. After Accumula Town, you next visit Striaton City. This is the home of the Trainers' School, Fennel's Lab, and it is also the location of the first Gym. What is unusual about the gym leader here?

Answer: There are three leaders, and the one you face depends on the starter Pokémon you chose

The three leaders are named Chili, Cress and Cilan, and after you defeat any of them in battle, you receive the Trio Badge, which causes any Pokémon up to level 20, even those obtained in a trade, to always obey you. You can also use HM01 (Cut) outside of battle. Their two Pokémon are at levels 12 and 14.
5. After successfully earning your first badge, your journey takes you to the Dreamyard. Which organization do you encounter (and battle) here for the first time?

Answer: Team Plasma

Two Team Plasma Grunts are bullying Munna, in an attempt to acquire the Dream Mist from it. They are later scared off by an illusion of Ghetsis, created by a Musharna.
6. Later on in your adventure, you find yourself within Nacrene City, the site of the second gym, amongst the restored storehouses. The leader, Lenora, specializes in what Pokémon type?

Answer: Normal

By defeating this gym, you receive the Basic Badge and TM67, Retaliate. Lenora is the third Normal-type gym leader, after Whitney (Johto) and Norman (Hoenn), and has two Pokémon, at levels 18 and 20.
7. After earning your second badge in Nacrene City, what item does Bianca give you?

Answer: Dowsing MCHN

The Dowsing MCHN can be used to find hidden items on the ground, especially helpful for Pinwheel Forest. The Dowsing MCHN has been usable since the "Diamond", "Pearl" and "Platinum" versions, (also known as the Dowsing Machine App) where it replaced the Itemfinder, which was used for similar purposes.
8. After making your way through Pinwheel Forest and crossing the Skyarrow Bridge, you arrive in Castelia City, bustling with its city roads and the Cruise Ship Dock. Hidden away on the western-most street is the third Gym on your journey. The leader, Burgh, uses Bug Pokémon. Which of these is NOT part of his team?

Answer: Joltik

Burgh's Pokémon range between levels 21-23. Defeating Burgh earns you the Insect Badge and TM76 (Struggle Bug). Also, Pokémon up to level 40 will obey you.
9. Traveling north from Castelia City, you pass the gate and arrive on Route 4. However, the weather here is different than what you've encountered before - what weather condition is always present in this area, including during Pokémon battles?

Answer: Sandstorm

The sandstorm has halted the construction along the route as well. In the middle of the two completed sections, there is deeper sand where wild Pokémon such as Sandile and Darumaka roam.
10. Taking the north-west path along Route 4, you visit the Desert Resort. Towards the top of this area is the Relic Castle. Close to the entrance is someone who will give you a fossil. Are your two choices the Cover and Plume Fossils?

Answer: Yes

When restored at the Nacrene Museum, the Cover Fossil will be a Tirtouga, and the Plume Fossil yields an Archen. Both of these revived Pokémon evolve into their final forms at level 37.
11. After leaving the Desert Resort, you head north this time on Route 4, and arrive at Nimbasa City, where the Day-Care Man is being harassed by some Grunts, and is in need of assistance. After helping him, what item does he give you?

Answer: Bicycle

In addition to receiving the Bicycle, you can now also leave a second Pokémon at the Day-Care on Route 3, which allows Pokémon to be bred. When the character passed the Day-Care originally, you could only leave the one Pokémon to be taken care of.
12. Nimbasa City is home to a range of interesting places, including the Battle Institute, Musical Theater, Big Stadium, Battle Subway and the fourth Gym. The leader of this Gym, Elesa, specializes in Electric Pokémon and will give you Volt Switch upon defeating her. What TM number is Volt Switch?

Answer: 72

The other TM numbers also refer to Electric moves. TM24 is Thunderbolt, TM57 is Charge Beam, and TM93 is Wild Charge, which is the only Physical move of the four.
Elesa's Pokémon are between levels 25 and 27.
13. Now that you have your fourth badge, you notice there is a path leading east out of Nimbasa City which leads to Route 16 and then Marvelous Bridge, but you can't take it yet. Why is this?

Answer: Marvelous Bridge is being checked and people are blocking the entrance

The checking of Marvelous Bridge apparently tends to take a long time, because it won't be available for use until the Elite Four is defeated. For now, it's time to go somewhere else.
14. Since you aren't able to take the east path leading out of Nimbasa City, you follow the west path instead to Route 5, which leads to the Driftveil Drawbridge. On the other side is Driftveil City, home to the Driftveil Market, the Move Tutor's house, and the fifth Gym. You earn a TM after defeating the leader, Clay, but he doesn't give it to you straight away - rather, after using the TM move to clear the path into Chargestone Cave. What move is it?

Answer: Bulldoze

Being a Ground-type Gym leader, he uses Bulldoze to clear the entrance, which was blocked by a web from a Galvantula. Clay's Pokémon range between level 29 and level 31.
15. Now that the path is clear, you make your way through Chargestone Cave and arrive at Mistralton City on the other side. The main feature of the city is a runway for planes to depart and land; at the north end of the runway, you find the sixth Gym. The leader here, Skyla, specializes in Flying-type pokémon. What is the name of the badge you can win here?

Answer: Jet Badge

After defeating her Pokémon, which range between levels 33 and 35, she will give you the Jet Badge, in addition to TM62 (Acrobatics). This badge causes all Pokémon up to level 70 to obey you in battle.
