An Adventure Seen in "Black" and "White": Part 2 Quiz

Being the games that re-introduced me to the "Pokémon" video game series, I thought it would be fitting to write a quiz detailing the main character's journey. Part 2 covers the seventh gym and onward. These games are for the Nintendo DS.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Having won your sixth badge in Mistralton City, you travel through Twist Mountain, where you receive HM03 (Surf) from Alder. This allows you to now reach Mistralton Cave from the recently traveled Route 6. Within it you find the legendary pokémon, Cobalion. What dual typing does Cobalion have?

Answer: Steel/Fighting

Cobalion has the moves Helping Hand, Retaliate, Sacred Sword and Iron Head.
The alternative options refer to the other three legendary pokémon who are members of the Swords of Justice quartet - Terrakion is Rock/Fighting, Virizion is Grass/Fighting and Keldeo is Water/Fighting. Terrakion and Virizion can both be found in-game, while Keldeo was temporarily available through a giveaway event.
2. After catching Cobalion, you now travel back to the Pinwheel Forest; however you are now able to proceed through to Rumination Field, where you find the second legendary pokémon, Virizion. When you try to capture it, you find that its level matches that of Cobalion's earlier - which level is this?

Answer: 42

Virizion has the moves Helping Hand, Retaliate, Sacred Sword and Giga Drain, the first three it shares with Cobalion. Having caught these two legendary pokémon, the last one of the trio, Terrakion, remains. However, it resides in an area not yet encountered at this point.
3. Having caught both Cobalion and Virizion, you now make your way back to Twist Mountain, and reach Icirrus City on the other side. It is home to the Pokémon Fan Club, Aha's House, and some wetlands where wild pokémon roam (except for the winter when the water freezes). It also contains the seventh Gym. The leader here specializes in Ice pokémon - what is the leader's name?

Answer: Brycen

Brycen was the third Gym leader to specialize in the Ice-type, after Pryce in the Johto region and Candice in the Sinnoh region. Wulfric would become the fourth, in the Kalos region.
Upon defeating Brycen, you receive the Freeze Badge and TM79 (Frost Breath).
4. Being just one win away from collecting all of the Gym badges in Unova, you make haste and swiftly arrive in Opelucid City. Home to the Battle House, it also contains the eighth and final Gym, specializing in Dragon-types. However, the leader you face is not fixed; it depends on the version you're playing. Iris is the leader in the "White" version, but who would you face in the "Black" version instead?

Answer: Drayden

This is only the second Dragon-type Gym to be encountered in the game series, after Blackthorn City's Gym in the Johto region, where Clair is the leader (It was also the final Gym to be encountered in that region as well). Defeating either leader earns you the Legend Badge, which causes all pokémon to obey you in battle. You also receive TM82, Dragon Tail.
5. Outside the Opelucid City Gym, Professor Juniper is waiting for you. After she guides you to Route 10 (which leads to the Pokémon League), she gives you which item for defeating all eight Gym leaders?

Answer: Master Ball

You also receive a Master Ball from Professor Elm for clearing the eight Johto Gyms in "Gold", "Silver" and "Crystal" and their remakes. It's also the top prize for the various lotteries throughout the games.
6. Traveling through the gate on Route 10, a guide tells you of a storm on Route 7. Deciding to investigate, you travel there and find that it's being caused by either Tornadus, the Cyclone pokémon ("Black") or Thundurus, the Bolt Strike pokémon ("White"). When you encounter either in the wild, what level will they be?

Answer: 40

The pokémon will roam the Unova region after talking to an elderly woman living on Route 7. Both have the ability Prankster, and the moves Revenge and Agility. Interestingly, Tornadus is the only pokémon to be purely Flying-type, even through Generation VI.
7. After resuming your journey on Route 10, you continue northeast, passing through all of the checkpoints by holding the necessary Badges. You soon find yourself at Victory Road. Within this path is the Trial Chamber, where the third and final of the Legendary pokémon trio, Terrakion, resides. Which number does it occupy in the Unova Dex?

Answer: 145

Just like Cobalion and Virizion, Terrakion is found at level 42, has the ability Justified, and the moves Helping Hand, Retaliate and Sacred Sword. It also holds the move Rock Slide. The ability Justified raises the Attack by one level when it is hit by a Dark-type move.
8. After making your way up the cliff in Victory Road, you arrive at the Pokémon League. The Elite Four await you here. Which of the members is not matched up correctly with their pokémon type specialty?

Answer: Marshal - Electric

Marshal does not use an Electric-type team, but rather a Fighting-type team. Marshal is unique in that he is the only Elite Four member of any region to not use any dual-type pokémon in a battle. When you face him in a rematch this is no longer the case, but it is still interesting to note.
9. Upon successfully conquering the Elite Four, you make your way into N's Castle, and after making your way to the top floor, you are beset by three consecutive encounters. Which of these is not one of them?

Answer: Champion Alder

First you catch either Reshiram or Zekrom, depending on the game's version, and then it helps you to defeat first N, and then Team Plasma's leader, Ghetsis. Upon winning the battle with Ghetsis, the credits roll for the first time - well done!
If your party and pokémon boxes are full when you encounter the legendary pokémon however, you can challenge them at the top of Dragonspiral Tower later in the game.
10. Upon completion of the main story, it's time to take care of some unfinished business. You meet with Looker of the International Police, and he informs you the remaining Sages (everyone except Ghetsis) are in hiding, and need apprehending. How many Sages are you told to find?

Answer: 6

They are the Seven Sages, which means, excluding Ghetsis, there are six left: Giallo, Rood, Gorm, Ryoku, Zinzolin and Bronius. After Looker informs you of the situation, he also upgrades you to the National Pokédex.
11. It takes you a while, but you eventually manage to find all of the Sages, and decide to seek out the remaining legendary pokémon in the Unova region. Your first stop is Abundant Shrine, and with both Tornadus and Thundurus in tow, the legendary pokémon appears - what is its name?

Answer: Landorus

When it appears at the Shrine, it is at level 70, and is of the Ground/Flying type. Its ability is Sand Force, and it uses the moves Rock Slide, Eathquake, Fissure and Sandstorm.
12. Your next port of call is Undella Town, which happens to be the next city on your path. You then travel north through the long and winding Route 13, and finally to the Giant Chasm. After reaching the middle of the Crater Forest, you are suddenly blanketed in snow from the legendary pokémon you were looking for, as it was returning to its cave. You enter the cave and find the Dragon/Ice type Kyurem, which happens to be which level?

Answer: 75

Kyurem's ability is Pressure, and its moves are Dragon Pulse, Imprison, Glaciate and Endeavor, which is a particularly interesting move as it lowers the opposing pokémon to the same HP as the user, which can eliminate a lot of health in one hit - not exactly the easiest pokémon to catch in the game!
13. Satisfied with the pokémon you have caught, you decide to take on the Elite Four for a second time, as you didn't get to challenge the Champion the first time. You feel a bit rusty, as you haven't battled competitively for a while. Thankfully, back in Undella Town is Cynthia, a visiting Champion you can battle to get back up to speed. From which other region is she from?

Answer: Sinnoh

She was the Champion in the "Diamond", "Pearl" and "Platinum" versions, but her team is slightly different now. Roserade has been substituted for Eelektross, and Braviary replaces Gastrodon ("Diamond", "Pearl") and Togekiss ("Platinum"). All of her pokémon are now between levels 75 and 77, which is roughly the same as they were during a rematch in "Platinum".
14. After your battle with Cynthia, you feel ready to take on the Elite Four once more. You succeed, and go on to face the Unova Champion, Alder. All of his pokémon are at level 75, with one exception. It is also his 'signature' pokémon - which one is it?

Answer: Volcarona

All four are present on his team - The other two members are Vanilluxe and Bouffalant.
Alder is the only region Champion that can't be faced until the completion of the entire main storyline, due to Team Plasma's exploits. In addition, he is the only Champion to not use any Pokémon discovered outside of the generation of their introduction.
15. You win the battle, and now that you are Unova Champion, there remains only one thing to do - visit the last remaining area on the map. It is an interactive area that will vary in development depending on how long it took you to reach it. If you are playing the "Black" version, it will be a City. What type of area will it be if you are playing "White"?

Answer: Forest

There will be between 0 and 10 people within a White Forest, and between 12 and 45 residents in a Black City. White Forests allow you to catch more wild pokémon from previous generations, while Black Cities allow the acquisition of rarer items (albeit at inflated prices) and battling of up to 12 Trainers.
