Answer: Sixteen

The Intellivision controller is certainly unique. Back in the early '80s, every company wanted as much buttons as they could fit on a controller.The Intellivision featured sixteen buttons. To know what to press, there would be a sheet of paper that slid in the top of the controller that would show you where to press. These were called "overlays".

When you are caught out by the opponent in "Major League Baseball", the game will say "Yer out!" Although... it sounds like a frog saying it! What do you expect when you attempt voices on a system from the '70s...?

In 1982, the "Intellivoice Voice Synthesis Module" was released for retail sale. The add-on made certain games able to "speak". The add-on was only compatible with four games, sadly: "Space Spartans", "Bomb squad", "B-17 Bomber" and "Tron: Solar Sailer".

Intellivision's biggest competitor was the Atari 2600. The 2600 sold much more than the Intellivision and was a much bigger success. The Intellivision sold the most units besides the Atari 2600. ColecoVision came in third place, and... the Vectrex and Magnavox Odyssey 2 came no where near the top five systems at this time according to the number of units sold!
