Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pokemon #12 in the Kanto Pokedex, what creature evolves from a cocooned Pokemon at level 10?

Answer: Butterfree

Butterfree can be one of the earliest encountered Pokemon in the game because its earlier forms, Caterpie and Metapod, can be found in the high grasses of Viridian Forest between Viridian City and Pewter City. Surprisingly, while Butterfree is a bug/flying-type Pokemon, it can learn psychic-type moves including Confusion (at level 12) and Psybeam (at level 32).

These can be especially effective against gym leader Brock's Pokemon if you happened to select Charmander as your starter Pokemon and have no super effective attacks to use in this first gym leader battle.

In "Pokemon Red and Blue", Butterfree is one of the earliest Pokemon to evolve (from Metapod) at level 10.
2. What is the name of TM35, a technique otherwise learned solely by Clefairy and Clefable through leveling?

Answer: Metronome

Metronome is a unique move in the sense that it is virtually every move in the game roster. Although only learned inherently by Clefairy and Clefable, this attack, when used, will randomly select an attack from the game and use it in battle. In other words, any move from Splash to Fire Blast may be used, regardless of effectiveness. TM35 is found in the Pokemon Lab on Cinnabar Island and can be taught as a normal-type move to numerous different Pokemon.

Although it's a normal-type move, its effectiveness is determined by the random attack; if Psybeam is used, it will be super effective against Pokemon who are weak to psychic attacks.
3. Which of the following badges is given to you by Blaine?

Answer: Volcano Badge

Blaine is the seventh gym leader to appear in the game; he's found on Cinnabar Island in the southwest corner of the map. Specializing in fire-type Pokemon, Blaine uses Growlithe, Ponyta, Rapidash, and Arcanine in his party to best trainers. This is particularly interesting because of the local Pokemon Mansion-- a burnt-out building containing a number of fire-type creatures. Blaine's Volcano Badge will not allow the player to know any different HMs and it won't allow higher-level Pokemon to obey you (at least not above level 70). Blaine will also give the player TM38 containing Fire Blast, one of the more powerful fire-type attacks to be found in the game.
4. Found between Pewter City and Cerulean City, what imposing mountain is visited early on in the game?

Answer: Mount Moon

When you first enter Mount Moon you'll soon come to find that beyond the immense amount of Zubats and Geodudes you'll end up fighting Team Rocket for the first time. The only way to get to Cerulean City is through the caves here at Mount Moon so encounters are inevitable. Luckily, if you happen to make it to the end and defeat the final trainers you'll receive a prize (in the form of a fossil) which can be redeemed later on in the game. Mount Moon is also one of the only places in the game where you can obtain Moon Stones, evolution stones used to transform Jigglypuff into Wigglytuff, Clefairy into Clefable, and Nidorina/Nidorino into Nidoqueen/Nidoking.
5. Who is the second gym leader fought in the game?

Answer: Misty

Misty makes her home in Cerulean City along the northern reaches of the map and her gym is dedicated to water-type Pokemon. In "Pokemon Red and Blue", Misty will award you the Cascade Badge allowing Pokemon up to level 30 to obey you and HM01, Cut, to be used by specific Pokemon.

In battle she'll utilize her level 18 Staryu and level 21 Starmie. After the battle, Misty will also give the player TM11, BubbleBeam, which is a water-type move her creatures use in battle.
6. Pokedex Entry #102 in Kanto, what is the name of this Pokemon which can only be found in Safari Zone?

Answer: Exeggcute

Exeggcute is a series of eggs although all of the components in this half dozen contribute to the full Pokemon. Using a Leaf Stone, Exeggcute will evolve into Exeggutor, a creature with legs which actually resembles a tree. Exeggcute is a grass-type Pokemon with certain psychic qualities (for example it can use Hypnosis and Reflect and it can learn psychic TMs). Uniquely, Exeggcute is one of only three Pokemon which can learn TM37: Egg Bomb. Exeggutor is another and, oddly, so is Chansey. Exeggcute is only found in Safari Zone, north of Fuchsia City.
7. What one-hit KO attack is only used by Kingler, Krabby, and Pinsir?

Answer: Guillotine

Guillotine is a learn-only move by the three Pokemon listed-- it can't be found as a TM anywhere in Kanto. One of only three one-hit KO moves in the game (the others being Fissure and Horn Drill), it's usually quite difficult for this attack to actually hit-- it's a 30% chance, in fact, and it's actually impossible to hit an enemy with a higher speed stat than your own Pokemon. Krabby and Kingler learn this song at level 25 while Pinsir does so at level 30.

The attack only has 5 PP, probably due to its immense strength if it hits.
8. In which Kanto location will you find the Name Rater?

Answer: Lavender Town

Lavender Town is a small village located on the eastern edge of the map. While this particular location is one of the few in the game not to contain a gym it does feature a rather tall haunted tower, one of the only locations at which you can catch ghost Pokemon. Lavender Town is also home to the Name Rater, a man who will nickname your Pokemon for you if you choose to employ his services. Lavender Town is south of the Power Plant and Rock Tunnel and it's east of Saffron City.

The first time you visit it you'll be on your way to Celadon City which is much further west.

Unfortunately, the path through Saffron City will be blocked, so you'll need to take the long way around.
9. Which of these items will inevitably create an Aerodactyl?

Answer: Old Amber

Aerodactyl is a rock/flying-type Pokemon slotted into position #142 of the Kanto Pokedex and like Omanyte (created from the Helix Fossil) and Kabuto (created from the Dome Fossil), this creature is one that can be found in item-form early on and then brought to Cinnabar Island's research lab to be cloned into an authentic fossil Pokemon. Aerodactyl originates in the form of Old Amber which can be found in the museum in Pewter City. Aerodactyl has very high speed and is one of may Pokemon that can learn HM02 (Fly).

Although Aerodactyl is a rock-type Pokemon it does not learn any rock-type moves in "Blue" and "Red". It does, however, learn a number of normal-type attacks including Agility and Hyper Beam.
10. Which Pokemon is likely to use the item depicted in battle?

Answer: Hitmonchan

#107 in the Kanto Pokedex, Hitmonchan was a unique Pokemon in that you could only receive either him or Hitmonlee after fighting your way through the Fighting Dojo, an unofficial gym in Saffron City. While Hitmonlee was accustomed to fighting with legs, Hitmonchan was a hand-to-hand fighter.

As such, Hitmonchan received a number of different unique techniques including Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, and Mega Punch. Only one Hitmonchan was available in the game though several could be traded around and you could have the chance to win one by linking up with "Pokemon Stadium" (N64).
