Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the main character, who finds the Mana Sword and sets off on the quest, initially on his own?

Answer: Whatever you choose to name him.

The naming is something that has to be done before beginning the game. When out playing with his friends, the boy falls off of a log bridge. Here he meets a ghost who instructs him to remove the sword from the rock in the water. He does this and uses it to fight monsters on his way back to the village, where he must fight a rather more powerful monster.

A mysterious stranger tells him that the sword is the Mana Sword, and directs him to go to the Water Palace.
2. What is the common method of traveling long distances?

Answer: by cannon

When the boy leaves his village he goes to the Cannon Travel Centre, where he finds that Jema has paid his passage to the Water Palace. He could, of course, choose to walk instead, but he soon must make journeys where walking would be impossible. Cannon Travel provides direct links between various locations. You pay your fee and then slide into the cannon. You are then shot out of the cannon, and spiral in the air until you land with a thump at your destination.
3. At the Water Palace, the boy learns a little bit more about the peril of the land, and how his sword can help fight the evil Empire. He is told to visit the Dwarven Village at Gaia's Navel, where he might find someone who can forge the sword and make it more powerful. What is the name of the Blacksmith who does this for him?

Answer: Watts

You only get to name the three characters that you can play, and Watts isn't one of these. Watts makes a fair fortune off of the Mana Knight, by forging the different Mana weapons to different levels. Each weapon has several levels of orbs, which can either be found in treasure chests, or are awarded every time a major monster is defeated.

When a new orb is acquired the weapon must be forged by Watts, who thoughtfully follows them all over the land. Once the weapon is forged, the members of the party each practice with the weapon in order to raise their proficiency with it.

There are actually so many weapons and levels by the end that it is not feasible for everyone to be proficient at every level with every weapon.
4. The boy also picks up a companion in the Dwarven Village, who sets off with the boy in search of his memory. What race is this companion?

Answer: a Sprite

The boy pays money to watch a show in which the Sprite begs for money in order to help find his way home. The boy gives him some money, but later overhears the Sprite and one of the dwarfs laughing about the trick they had played on him, and his money is refunded.

After the boys defeats the monster Tropicallo, the dwarf suggests that the Sprite (who has whatever name you choose to give him) go with the boy.
5. The third member of the party is a girl who we liked to refer to as a princess, even though she wasn't royalty. Depending on how you play the game, she can either be found in the Enchanted Forest or in the City of Pandora.

Answer: True

Actually, if the boy is unlucky enough to be caught by goblins while travelling south, the girl helps him escape but then she disappears again. If he goes directly into the Enchanted Forest after defeating the big monster at Gaia's Navel, then he and the Sprite will meet the girl there, being held prisoner by the Chobin Hoods.

However if they goes back to the city of Pandora before entering the forest, they may meet up with her there. She joins the party because she is looking for her fiancé, Dyluck.
6. The boy receives a message to return to the Water Palace, where he is directed to help the Water Elemental, Undine. In gratitude for their help, she bestows her magic abilities upon the party. The Sprite receives the ability to use offensive spells and the girl is given defensive spells. What kind of magic is given to the boy?

Answer: no magic

When the boy questions this, the Water Elemental informs him that his sword will grow to be more powerful than any magic. She also assures him that the girl can cast her defensive spells on his weapons, giving them magical properties. The party must spend time practicing their magic in order to raise it to the full level, and this, in my humble opinion, is the one flaw in the game. With each elemental they visit (and there are 8 in total), they receive a new magic and a new level. So a tremendous amount of time is spent building up the magical powers accordingly.

When they next pick up the Gnome magic, for example, they must practice to raise both Gnome and Undine to the second level. As each level progresses, more practice is needed to achieve the higher level.
7. At one point they rescue a baby dragon from a nasty big serpent that they assume has killed the dragon's mother. They leave the dragon with King Truffle to raise, and he names the dragon Flammie. Do they ever see Flammie again?

Answer: Yes

Many adventures later, they defeat Geshtar (for the second time) atop the roof of the Emperor's castle. Geshtar proves to be a sore loser, and decides to destroy the entire castle in a fit of pique. Our friends appear to have no way off of the castle, when they are rescued by King Truffle, riding a full grown Flammie.

He gives them Flammie's Drum, which can be used to summon him whenever they need him. So Flammie becomes their method of transportation, eliminating the need for Cannon Travel.
8. Early in the game, the party is advised to visit the Lofty Mountains and to seek out the advice of Sage Joch, but every time they go there they are told that Joch is out. This is used as a device to tell the adventurers where to go next, because they follow Joch to whatever location he is supposedly at. When they finally meet up with Joch, what test of courage do they have to undergo?

Answer: fighting themselves

After fighting many dangerous monsters along the way, the party meets up with their doubles and the battle begins. They soon find that their magic is useless in this battle, and that only by working together as a team are they able to defeat their opponents. Joch explains that they had to be ready to undergo this test, which is why he had refused to talk to them on previous visits.
9. Does the girl ever succeed in rescuing Dyluck?

Answer: No

Dyluck is being controlled by the ancient sorcerer, Thanatos. Thanatos takes over Dyluck's young, healthy body because his old one is falling apart. However he doesn't count on Dyluck fighting his possession. This resistance thwarts Thanatos' plans and helps the party defeat him, but it is too late for Dyluck, who perishes with Thanatos.
10. They enter the Pure Lands and fight many battles to find the Mana Tree. Just when they reach the point where they can see the tree, the Empire destroys it with a blast from the newly resurrected Mana Fortress. Although destroyed, the tree speaks to the party, telling them the history of the Mana and what they must do to defeat the Empire. What special relationship does the boy have with the tree?

Answer: The tree is his mother.

His mother had once been a woman of the Mana Tribe but she had evolved into the tree. His father had been the Mana Knight whose ghost he had met when he found the Mana Sword. It now falls to the boy to take up his father's sword (which he has already done) and defeat the Mana Beast before it can attack the Mana Fortress and destroy the world.
