Answer: Iron Lance

The Reginleif is Ephraim's first special weapon (essentially Eirika's Rapier) and it is effective against infantry (armored units and cavalry). He also gets a Steel Lance in case and an Elixir for healing. He may have not been given an Iron Lance because it is the weakest lance in the game, hindering his first impression on new players.

He is automatically the main lord for the side chapter of 5x and does not reappear until Chapter 8.

Answer: Gilliam

Gilliam and Syrene met long ago in Frelia's army, although they won't remember it unless you initiate the support conversations between them, and therefore Gilliam cannot recruit Syrene. Being prince and princess of Frelia, Syrene is sure to recognize them Tana and Innes.

She and Vanessa are sisters, so she can easily persuade her to join their side in the army. Alternatively, you can just let Syrene survive until the end of the chapter and she will be recruited anyway.

Answer: Battle Axe

Dozla is recruited in Chapter 11 by having L'Arachel talk to him (both Eirika's and Ephraim's routes). He also comes with an Elixir. He holds the only Battle Axe you can get outside of secret shops.

Answer: by visiting a house

Recruited in Chapter 12 on both routes, Ewan is the third and final "trainee" class of the game, specifically a Pupil. Tethys is his sister and Saleh is his mentor, although Ewan doesn't appear during the battle until recruited, therefore unable to be recruited by conversation.

Answer: L'Arachel

Joshua, Marisa, and Rennac are all enemy units when encountered, whereas L'Arachel is a green (other) unit. You must talk to each of them with a certain unit to let them join, although another difference between L'Arachel and the others is that she will join after the battle even if you didn't talk to her.

Answer: Amelia

Amelia will appear in Chapter 9 after the fourth turn, although she will leave if you don't talk to her with Eirika or Franz soon enough. If you miss out on her, she will reappear in Chapter 13.

Answer: Six

Seth, Franz, Kyle, Forde, L'Arachel, and Duessel all start out on horses. Selena, Fado, and Orson are secret characters that can be recruited during Creature Campaign that also start on horseback. You can achieve up to fifteen, or eighteen including the three mentioned extra units.

Answer: Nobody; she joins you from the start

She will automatically be on your team at the beginning of Chapter 9 (both routes), despite being locked up in a cell in Ephraim's route with no one knowing. In Eirika's route, Tana is the one who recruits Innes, although Eirika can too. She has nothing to do with Vanessa other than the fact they are both pegasus knights.

Answer: Marisa

In Eirika's route, she also has a Vulnerary, or an Elixir in Ephraim's route. A Shamshir is a lightweight sword with a high chance of a critical hit that can only be used by Myrmidons, Swordmasters, Assassins, and Eirika. Like the Battle Axe, you must buy them from the secret shop if it breaks, although you can get one post-game from Ismaire.

Answer: Chapter 10A

In Chapter 10A, you can recruit Innes, Gerik, Tethys, and Marisa all by talking to them, having the most recruitable units out of any other chapter. In Chapter 12B, you can recruit Ewan and Marisa, but that's it. In Chapter 15, you get three different units depending on which route you took.

In Chapter 13A, Cormag is recruitable and Amelia too if you didn't get her in Chapter 9A but she survived.
