She was meant to be called Nails the Bat due to her using her nails to dig, like Knuckles' knuckles. This was probably because she is a rival to Knuckles in the game.

After you beat both the Hero and Dark Story, you unlock the Last Story. The final stage is Cannon's Core where you play as everyone. After that is the Biolizard Boss, and the Final Hazard boss.

Answer: Sonic, Eggman, Knuckles

In the beta, Sonic, Knuckles, and Eggman were only playable because of the three different play styles. Shadow, Rouge, and Tails later became playable when fans demanded it.

Eggman reads a newspaper saying Tails won an emerald by saving Station Square from a missile strike. This is a reference to "Sonic Adventure" because in the end of Tails' story, this is what happened.
