Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the original "Ocarina of Time" (N64), what note does the A button play?

Answer: D

The A button is a D, C-Down is an F, C-Right is an A, C-Left is a B, and C-Up is a higher D. You can also use the R and Z buttons, as well as the Control Stick, to vary the pitch by up to two semitones.
2. The song 'Zelda's Lullaby' from "Ocarina of Time" (N64) is in what key?

Answer: G major

The key is G major, so C-Left is Mi, C-Up is So, and C-Right is Re. Oddly enough, Do (G) cannot be played on the ocarina without the use of the Control Stick.
3. Which song from "Ocarina of Time" (N64) is in the key of C major?

Answer: Saria's Song

'Saria's Song', despite the fact that none of the notes on the C major triad are easily playable on the ocarina, is in the key of C major. 'The Song of Storms' is in D minor, 'Epona's Song' is in D major, and the Hyrule Field theme is in G major.
4. Which song introduced in "A Link to the Past" (SNES) is (originally) in F minor?

Answer: Hyrule Castle Theme

Ganon's Theme is in, well, it's kind of hard to tell what key it's in. The dissonance kind of makes it difficult to tell, but if anything it's in B minor. The Lost Woods theme from that game is in C major, and 'Zelda's Lullaby' is not only in G major, it isn't even from "A Link to the Past."
5. What strange chord is used near the beginning of the Lost Woods themes from both "A Link to the Past" (SNES) and "Ocarina of Time" (N64), in the latter as an arpeggio?

Answer: F(b5)

The chord consists of the notes F, A, and B. It sounds quite dissonant, but it is often used in music like these themes. The two themes are surprisingly related to each other musically (in terms of key signature and similar chords).
6. The tune often considered the main theme for the entire "Zelda" series (specifically the first game) is in what key?

Answer: Bb

Whether it's major or minor is tough to say (and seems to vary from game to game), but the song is definitely in the key of Bb, at least in the first game. In "Majora's Mask" (N64) it's definitely minor. In other games the flatted 3rd note near the beginning is a major third, blurring the line.
7. The melody and harmony of Ganon's Theme (from "A Link to the Past") share the same rhythm and stay what interval apart?

Answer: Perfect 4th

For example, the first note of the melody is a Bb, and the harmony is an F. This interval stays constant throughout the piece. Note that the theme is almost twice as long in "Ocarina of Time", but the interval is the same.
8. I am one of the songs that you learn in "Ocarina of Time". My key is D minor and my tempo is about 210 BPM. Which song am I?

Answer: Song of Storms

'Zelda's Lullaby' is in G major, 'Epona's Song' is in D major, and the 'Song of Time' is in D minor but has a much slower tempo. Note that 210 BPM is not as fast as it may sound, because the song is in what is either 3/4, 3/8, or 6/8; it's hard to tell, and there isn't an official consensus.
9. The "Nocturne of Shadow" from "Ocarina of Time" (N64) goes through a series of eerie chords before resolving on which chord?

Answer: C# major

The chord progression is dissonant and hard to follow, but the song eventually changes key to resolve on a C# major chord. None of the notes in a C# major chord can be played easily on the ocarina, oddly enough. The fact that Koji Kondo was able to do this is quite interesting to think about.
10. Which "Zelda" game has overworld music in the key of E minor?

Answer: Twilight Princess

"Ocarina of Time's" (N64) overworld music is in G major. "Phantom Hourglass" (DS) has its "Great Sea" theme in Eb major. "A Link to the Past" (SNES) uses the well-known "Zelda" theme in Bb major/minor. "Twilight Princess'" overworld theme begins in D minor, quickly changes to G major in a i -> IV progression (which becomes v -> I), and then finally becomes E minor (the relative minor of G major).
