Ben Helm was killed in 1863 at the battle of Chickamungua. His widow Emilie Todd Helm visited the White House after his death, but refused to take an oath of alligence to the Union. She soon returned to the South, and after Lincoln refused her a pass to sell her cotton wrote a stinging letter accusing Lincoln of making her a widow. Mary never spoke to her again.

Col. Elsworth was a law student in Lincoln's Springfield office. When the war started he formed a regiment of Zouaves. Lincoln was very moved by his death, and held his funeral in the East Room of the White House.
