Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are six tones in Chinese.

Answer: False

There are either four or five tones, depending on whether you count the fifth as a proper tone or not. The first tone sounds monotonous, the second goes up, the third goes down then back up (represented by a v), and the fourth goes down. The fifth has no particular tone, and is also called the neutral tone.
2. Pick the best answer to this question in Chinese: What's your favorite color?

Answer: Wo xi huan hong se.

Wo xi huan hong se means "I like red" and it's the only logical answer. Wo ai ni means "I love you", wo men zai wan is "we are playing", and ta xi huan gou means "he likes dogs".
3. You are in at a restaurant in China, and you want dumplings. What do you tell the waiter?

Answer: Wo yao jiao zi

Wo yao jiao zi is the only one that has to do with food. Niao zai fei means "birds are flying", xue xiao means school, and wo men shi hao peng you means "we are good friends".
4. What does the period/full stop look like in a Chinese book?

Answer: A circle.

At the end of a sentence in Chinese, you'll find a circle, and it looks like an o, not a .
5. If you call someone "bu hao kan" what will their reaction be?

Answer: Mad

Bu hao kan means "not pretty". Please don't say that to anyone.
6. Do you know how to swim? (answer in Chinese)

Answer: Wo bu hui

Wo bu hui is "I don't know how". If you wanted to say I know how, it is "wo hui".
Wo chang de hen hao is "I sing very well", ta hen bu hao means "he's bad", and wo hui da zi means "I can type".
7. What letter is not in the Chinese alphabet?

Answer: v

Instead of v, the Chinese alphabet has a u with 2 dots on top. It is represented in typings as a v, though.
8. Modern Chinese books have the writing going vertically from right to left.

Answer: False

Most books read like a book in English- horizontally and left to right, although some don't.
9. What sound does "i" make in Chinese pin yin, transcribed into English?

Answer: ee

I also sounds like "ee" in French.
10. Another type of writing Chinese is "fan ti zi". Which of the following is TRUE?

Answer: It has more steps to write each word

Fan ti zi is not used very often anymore. The Chinese MOSTLY use the simplified way of writing now.
