Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Apparently if a person stood up and yelled for eight years and seven months and six days, this would generate enough energy to make what?

Answer: One cup of coffee

This is one of those weird findings that makes one wonder more about the person who actually took the time to work out this figure in the first place. Quite disregarding the fact that this yeller would probably be thrown in jail for disturbing the peace in such an unseemly manner, I should imagine that anyone who actually survived for that long would have such a sore throat by the end of it, that a cup of hot coffee would be the last thing they'd be interested in swallowing.
2. Walt Disney was said to be afraid of which creature?

Answer: Mice

Walt Disney was born in 1901 and was a world famous film and cartoon producer, director and animator. With his brother, Roy, they set up the multi-million dollar company, Walt Disney Productions. During his career he won an astonishing 26 Academy Awards for his work in film and animation. Sadly, he died from the effects of lung cancer in 1966.

He himself provided the voice and personality of his most famous creation, Mickey Mouse, until 1947, but there is still considerable debate about whether he was afraid of mice himself. One suspects it's a bit of an urban legend.
3. A woodpecker can peck how many times per second?

Answer: Twenty

Woodpeckers are found in almost every country in the world except Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and of course the poles. Their diet consists in the main of insects obtained from trees. They hammer holes in the wood and then reach in to get their dinner with their long tongues. I'm not sure why I think the fact that they can peck at the rate of twenty times per second so amusing, but sadly I do. I also think it's funny that somebody took the time to find out that Neil Armstrong first made contact with the surface of the moon with his left foot.
4. In space, which sad thing can astronauts not perform properly?

Answer: Cry

And the reason they can't cry properly is that their tears float back up into their eyes. How hilarious is that finding! To be honest, I'd be a little concerned if any astronaut I was unlucky enough to be in space with started crying - and visions of Apollo 13 would begin to dance in my head.
5. The word "testify" is said to have originated back in court trials carried out in Roman times. Men who were about to take place in any trial proceedings had to place their right hand on which part of their body before swearing to the truth of their testimony?

Answer: Testicles

The Latin word "testis" originally meant to witness. There is still some debate as to which meaning came first - the body part or the swearing in court - but the association exists. The ancient Israelites also apparently followed this custom. There is one section in the Old Testament which appears to back up the history of the origin of the practice.

It states "And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house..'Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: And I will make thee swear...etc' (Genesis 24:1-4).
6. An ant always falls on which side when it is intoxicated?

Answer: Right

So funny! Ants evolved almost 130 million years ago after the rise of flowering plants. The little creatures are found everywhere. They are extremely organised in every facet of their lives, including different levels and skills required from their workers. Intoxication can occur from the saps and juices of various plants or fungi they come across.
7. Once it was commonly believed that eagles mate in which environment?

Answer: In the air

That would be remarkable if true. Talk about precision flying. However this is now considered to be incorrect. Eagles actually do their courting in the air, a practice which involves their locking their talons together as though they are holding hands. They return to a more solid base in which to carry out the actual procedure.

These large and powerful birds are strikingly beautiful but very savage. They are the second fastest raptor in the sky. They have extremely keen eyesight with very large pupils which enables them to see prey from long distances away. Sadly though, if an eagle lays more than two eggs at a time, the older and bigger sibling of the two will usually kill the other chick - and the parents make no attempt to stop this slaying.
8. Due to its gravitational pull, what generally happens to the human body when the moon is directly overhead?

Answer: You will weigh slightly less

And don't we ladies just love the moon for that? The moon is the earth's satellite of course, but another surprising fact about it is that it is the fifth largest satellite in our solar system. It always shows the same face to the earth because it moves along the same line of rotation to our globe, and its gravitational effects also produce our tides and the minute lengthening of each day. Of course it's absolutely beautiful as well, and so far, the one form of night lighting that governments haven't charged us for as yet.
9. Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in which part of their bodies than those people of average intelligence?

Answer: Their hair

How interesting is that! I find it a little hard to believe myself, but apparently this is indeed so, and one theory for the boosted intelligence is that the extra dosage allows the brain to make connections faster. Another theory is that the extra zinc and copper attracts more electromagnetic energy from the air, thus making their brain waves higher and faster. Hmmm. Maybe.

But what came first - the added intelligence or the extra zinc and copper? And how then can bald people be factored into this finding? Perhaps they had so much energy in their hair that their follicles were zapped out.
10. It is estimated that millions of trees world wide are accidentally planted by which species with bad memories?

Answer: Squirrels

Apparently the squirrels store the nuts away for later consumption, but for one reason or another, forget where they have hidden these food stores and never return to collect them. Squirrels include tree, ground and flying species, chipmunks, marmot, woodchucks and prairie dogs - so that's a lot of nuts being squirreled away.

The little animals are native to Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and have been recently introduced to Australia - something I never knew about even though I was born here.

The forgotten nuts eventually sprout and begin to grow into large beautiful trees - and all thanks to those cute little critters with bad memories.
