Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Ace of Diamonds represents Bush's Senior Political Advisor, whom the President nicknamed "The Architect" for masterminding George W's winning gubernatorial campaigns in 1996 and 1998, as well as the victorious presidential campaigns of 2000 and 2004. Who is he?

Answer: Karl Rove

Among Rove's academic achievements Wikipedia lists the University of Utah, University of Maryland, College Park, George Mason University, and the University of Texas, although he actually holds degrees from none of them.
2. The Director of the FBI during both of Bush's terms (and up to 2013) is the face on the 8 of Spades. On 17 May of 2017 he signed on to a new gig for the Department of Justice. Who is he?

Answer: Robert Mueller

Mueller's full name is Robert Swan Mueller III. Bush appointed him FBI Director in 2001 and he became the longest-serving Director since J. Edgar Hoover when President Obama extended Mueller's ten-year term for two more. After graduating from Princeton he served as a Marine in Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart as well as the Bronze Star with Combat V for heroism.

He later also served as a United States Attorney and Acting U.S. Assistant Attorney General.
3. The face on the 4 of Diamonds, sporting the white mustache that is still familiar today, belongs to Dubya's Ambassador to the United Nations. Who is this hard-liner who became Donald Trump's National Security Advisor in April of 2018?

Answer: John Bolton

In 1982 and 1983, Bolton held a government position with one of the longest titles I've ever seen: Assistant Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development for Program and Policy Coordination. He has been called an "American nationalist" and a "war hawk" and has advocated regime change in Iran and North Korea. I think he's serious.
4. Who was George W. Bush's second administration's Secretary of State, pictured on the Queen of Hearts?

Answer: Condoleezza Rice

As noted on her Queen of Hearts card, Condi has said her "Dream Job" is to be Commissioner of the National Football League. In 2012 it was announced that she was one of the first two women admitted to membership in the Augusta National Golf Club. From 2014 through 2016, she also served as a member of the NCAA Football Playoff Committee.

As far as I know, however, she has not played any college or professional football.
5. The text on the Queen of Diamonds' card says that as Secretary of Labor, she advocated allowing states to opt out of Federal minimum wage laws. Who is this public servant who is also the wife of US Senator from Kentucky, Mitch McConnell, as well as Trump's Secretary of Transportation?

Answer: Elaine Chao

Chao has also served as Head of the Peace Corps and as Head of the Federal Maritime Commission.

Perkins was the first woman to ever serve as a Department head in a United States Cabinet, named by FDR in 1933 as Secretary of Labor. The other two did not serve in the Federal Government.
6. Looking out at us from the Ace of Clubs is George W. Bush's Vice President. What's his name again?

Answer: Dick Cheney

The card refers to Cheney with Bush's nickname for him of "Big Time." Born in 1941 in Lincoln, Nebraska, as Richard Bruce Cheney, the 46th US Vice President began serving in the Federal Government in 1975 as White House Chief of Staff for Gerald Ford. He then represented Wyoming in the House of Representatives from 1979 to 1989, serving as the House Minority Whip from '87 to '89. He then served George H. W. Bush as Secretary of Defense.

Gore was Clinton's VP, Rockefeller served under Ford, and Quayle was Veep to George H. W. Bush.
7. The King of Diamonds is the House Majority Leader from 2003 to 2005 whom Dubya nicknamed "The Hammer," according to the card. Can you recall the name of this Texas Republican?

Answer: Tom DeLay

A born-again Christian, DeLay is quoted on his card, saying "Give me one example that proves evolution. One example! You can't." Apparently the deck's publisher finds that an objectionable statement for a member of Congress. Another bit of interesting information about DeLay is that he was convicted of criminal charges for violating election laws in 2005, whereupon he resigned as House Majority Leader as well as his House seat.

In 2014 an Appellate Court overturned the conviction.
8. Shown on the Ace of Hearts is George W's Secretary of Defense, who served the same role for President Ford and, in between among other posts, spent six years in the House of Representatives representing Illinois. Who is this dedicated public servant who also served as Counselor to President Nixon?

Answer: Donald Rumsfeld

In serving as Secretary of Defense for Ford and Bush, Rumsfeld became the 13th and 21st holder of that position. He was also US Ambassador to NATO in 1973 and 1974, following that up with the role of Ford's Chief of Staff in 1974 and 1975. The quotation attributed to him on his card is, "I don't know what I said but I know what I think, and well, I assume it is what I said." Personally, I think the guy served his country well.

Colin Powell served as Secretary of State in the younger Bush's first administration.
9. The Jack of Diamonds is Bush's Attorney General who "held firm," according to the card, "that it is perfectly legal for CIA agents to use torture during interrogations--as long as the victims are not American citizens and the acts don't take place on U.S. soil." Who was this AG who had also been the first Hispanic to serve as White House Counsel?

Answer: Alberto Gonzales

Gonzales was the 100th Secretary of State of Texas before being appointed to the Texas Supreme Court. He served as White House Counsel from 2001 to 2005 and as Attorney General from 2005 until calls for his stepping down resulted in his resignation in 2007.

Gutierrez was Bush's Secretary of Commerce. Richardson is a former Governor of New Mexico who served as Clinton's UN Ambassador as well as Energy Secretary. Cisneros was Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under Clinton.
10. Our last card is the Three of Hearts. Nicknamed "Mad Dog," he is identified as "Commanding General, Combat Division" with the rank of Lieutenant General. Can you pick out which of the following military men this is, who has risen to prominence again in the Trump administration?

Answer: James Mattis

Donald Trump appointed Mattis as his Secretary of Defense in 2017. Back in 2005 the Bush Deck quoted "Mad Dog" as saying in reference to his service in Afghanistan, "I'll be right upfront with you, I like brawlin'. You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil. You know guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway, so it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

Trump moved Kelly from Secretary of Homeland Security to White House Chief of Staff on 31 July, 2017. His last command as a Marine General was Commander of the United States Southern Command.
Flynn was a former Lieutenant General who served as Obama's Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and then as Trump's National Security Advisor before resigning less than a month in the position.
Also a former Lieutenant General, McMaster succeeded Flynn as National Security Advisor before stepping down after 14 months on the job.
