Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Hungarian political party promised eternal life, world peace, one work day a week and rights for viruses during the 2006 elections. Later, in 2010, it promised "More Everything, Less Nothing" during the Budapest mayoral elections. With a canine candidate called István Nagy, what party is this?

Answer: Two-tailed Dog Party

The Two-tailed Dog Party was founded in Szeged, Hungary in 2006. The name István Nagy was chosen for the party's main candidate, a two-tailed dog, because it combines the most common first name and the most common surname in Hungary. The party engages in both original street art depicting its various promises and sabotage of other parties' posters/billboards.

Other party promises since 2006 have included a smaller country, lower gravity and two sunsets a day.
2. Particularly concerned about the influence of Tesco on the British High Street and keeping celebrities out of Britain, this British political party gained 112 votes in the 2010 election. Led by David "Bus Pass Elvis" Bishop, which political party is this?

Answer: The Church of the Militant Elvis Party

Having 6 registered campaign groups for various popular causes, including the "Militant Elvis Anti-Tesco Popular Front" and the "Elvis turns Green Party", this party's policies are a bizarre mixture of frivolous and sensible.

In standing for election in 2005, David Bishop promised to keep photos of celebrities at airports "to discourage undesirable foreigners from entering Britain" and to go to Antarctica to tell icebergs to "stop melting", but also to save the red squirrel from extinction. Later, in 2010, similarly diverse policies included filling in potholes, putting moats around all houses, and keeping public toilets in service.
3. Founded by cult author Robert Anton Wilson (also known as "Pope Bob") in 2003, this American political party started as a joke in response to Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign for governorship in California. With a slogan of "you tolerate my hobbies and I'll tolerate yours", what party was this?

Answer: Guns and Dope Party

In combining right wing gun-lovers and left-wing drug users, it seemed that the party could create a majority in voting. Unfortunately, frivolous policies such as replacing one third of Congress with ostriches, and encouraging voters to write their own name on the presidential ballot probably thwarted the party's attempts at success.

The party's ideology stems from Wilson's beliefs that "every ostrich is a tsar"; that is to say, every individual should be capable of governing him or her self.
4. Although it doesn't actually exist as a party in registered form, this Swedish movement promised free liquor and wider sidewalks. Named for a frivolous character, at the height of its popularity in 1991 this party was the 10th most popular in Sweden. What political party is this?

Answer: Donald Duck Party

This party was never actually registered with the Election Authority in Sweden, but it consistently received enough write-in votes to be considered an actual party and contender in elections. In 2002, before the Swedish general election, someone had ballots made up for it, and as recently as 2010 there were enough write-in votes for Donald Duck that the party was considered the most popular party without printed ballot papers. Really, casting a vote for the party is considered a joke or protest vote, but some still hold out hope that Sweden will someday be governed by Donald Duck.
5. Although now defunct, this Polish anti-alcoholism party was a surprise hit, managing to win 16 seats in the 1991 Polish general election. With the slogan "it won't be better but for sure it will be funnier", the party began as a joke campaign, but eventually turned into a serious political cause. What Polish political party was this?

Answer: Polish Beer Lovers' Party

Founded in the 1990s by satirist Janusz Rewiñski, the Polish Beer Lovers' Party originally aimed to abolish alcoholism through promotion of drinking beer in pubs rather than drinking spirits at home or in the street. Following their success in the 1991 elections, the party split into the Large Beer and Small Beer factions, with the Large Beer faction eventually becoming the "Polish Economic Program", which was much more serious a political party than the original Polish Beer Lovers' Party had been.

The original success of this party is perhaps due to the fact that it was formed shortly after the collapse of Communisim and stood for election in the midst of political uncertainty and fear.
6. Also widely known as the "Party Party", this Dutch political party has suggested a "Minister of Partying" and has satirised politics by filling its candidate list with Dutch celebrities. Its chairman being the same man that founded the Prince of Orange's former girlfriend's fan club, which Dutch political party is this?

Answer: Party of the Future

Dutch celebrities on the candidate list for Party of the Future have included Mental Theo, guru of happy hardcore house music, and that well-known writer of "The Fast Food Song", Eric Dikeb. The party has so far been unsuccessful in politics, winning no seats, but it has been popular with the Dutch press, not least due to the well-publicised arguments which have broken out between members over the order of listing candidates.
7. Created in the 1980s by two punks from Hannover, Germany, this political party satirises other parties' policies, promising amongst other things, a reimplementation of the German borders as they were in 1237, the right to unemployment with a full wage, and abolition of the requirement to give notice prior to a protest. Which German political party is this?

Answer: Anarchist Pogo Party of Germany

With a variety of slogans, including "Dumm aber glücklich!" (Dumb but happy!) and "Saufen, saufen, jeden Tag nur saufen!" (Drinking, drinking, every day nothing but drinking!), the Anarchist Pogo Party of Germany is popular among Germany's disillusioned youth.

As recently as 2009, it ran for election in the European Parliamentary elections. As well as making specific promises, the party specifically suggests Balkanisation, e.g. splitting the country up into sections which include "the parasite zone" for anarchist pogoists that want to drink and take drugs rather than work, a "safe employment zone" for prim workaholics that cannot handle anarchism and "violent theme parks" for offenders.
8. One of the most successful frivolous political parties in England, this party was founded by activist "Screaming Lord" David Sutch in the 1980s. Winning their first council seat in 1987, this party has had various policies over the years, including putting the Loch Ness Monster on the endangered species list, attaching bungee ropes to all vehicles to save fuel on return journeys and unmasking the Phantom of the Opera to show acceptance for disabled people. What party is this?

Answer: Official Monster Raving Loony Party

Despite the satirical and frivolous platform of the party, many of their ideas have been signed into law following campaigns, including lowering the voting age in England to 18, passports for all pets and pedestrianising specific tourist-heavy streets in London. Following David Sutch's suicide in 1999, the party has been in decline. Though it still regularly fields candidates for election, its popularity has declined and recent doomed attempts to include sponsorship from a betting shop have caused factions and in-fighting. However, it is still well known in the UK and its policies still continue to provide satirical relief to British politics.

Note: The "I Want to Drop a Blancmange Down Terry Wogan's Y-Fronts" Party did actually exist in 1987 when Pamela Stephenson ran for election and came sixth in the Windsor and Maidenhead constituency of England.
9. In 1994 in Denmark, comedian Jacob Haugaard unexpectedly won a local parliamentary seat. His campaign had been based on policies including putting Nutella in army field rations, better Christmas presents, and the right to impotency. Which political party did he represent?

Answer: Union of Conscientiously Work-Shy Elements

After gaining over 23,000 votes, Jacob Haugaard entered parliament, where he was forced to take the job seriously when he found himself often having the deciding vote in a hung parliament. He actually fulfilled at least 3 of his bizarre promises during his term in office. These included Nutella in army field rations, putting a public toilet in the park in Aarhus where he served beer and sausages to his voters using state party funding, and giving more bread to the ducks in Danish parks.

He stepped down in the election of 1998, stating that he respected the other parties.
10. This Canadian political party chooses its leader by having 12 candidates fight for it. Literally. Despite this, some of the party's actual politics are fairly serious and have been discussed by the Canadian parliament at times. Which party is this?

Answer: Canadian Extreme Wrestling Party

Although the CEWP wasn't actually registered with Elections Canada, it received a number of write-in votes and was taken fairly seriously. In 1999, Quentin Barboni beat 11 other wrestlers to become the first leader, and the tradition of a wrestling tournament for leadership has continued ever since.

The politics of the CEWP are generally left wing and fairly serious, and policies have included the abolishing overfishing in Canadian waters, withdrawal of Canada from NATO and a "Guaranteed Annual Income" for Canadians.
