Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lou Henry Hoover was the first US First Lady to speak an Asian language. In which language was she fluent?

Answer: Chinese

Mrs. Hoover and her husband honeymooned in China and even lived there during the Boxer Rebellion. Because Herbert worked as a manager of Chinese mines, he would travel into dangerous areas and Lou insisted on going with him.
2. Mrs. Hoover was raised an Episcopalian, but converted to what religion to match her husband?

Answer: Quaker

The Hoovers were married by a Roman Catholic priest because there was no Quaker community in Monterrey, where they got married.
3. Mrs. Hoover attended San Jose Normal School and was the school's only female major in what science?

Answer: Geology

This proved helpful when she and her husband translated a book called "De re metallica", which is about mining and metal technology.
4. For two periods, between 1922 - 1925 and 1935-1937, Mrs. Hoover was the president of what organization?

Answer: Girl Scouts

There are several buildings around the country named for Lou Henry Hoover and are operated by the Girl Scouts.
5. True or False: Lou Henry Hoover is buried in Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto, California.

Answer: False

She was originally buried there, but was re-interred at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch, Iowa, after her husband died twenty years later.
6. Once the Great Depression started, Mrs. Hoover became extremely unpopular as her husband's likability fell. Which is NOT one of the things Mrs. Hoover did to anger the public?

Answer: Served alcohol during Prohibition

Although she did occasionally drink alcohol, Mrs. Hoover never served it. In a failed attempt to spur the cotton industry, she wore a cotton dress, hoping it would encourage other women to buy cotton apparel. She did not realize that many women did not need to buy formal clothing because they did not attend formal events.

The Hoovers did not host a New Year's Day Reception because they were afraid people would say horrible things about them to their faces. Not only did she serve expensive food when many people were struggling, Mrs. Hoover served imported food, which was seen as un-American.

The Hoovers, however, did donate money to poor families and children. Mrs. Hoover would write out personal checks to people and did not cash checks of repayment from them.
7. When WWI soldiers camped out in front of the White House, what did Mrs. Hoover do?

Answer: Had blankets and refreshments delivered to them

Although her personal view on the matter is unknown, she clearly felt sympathy for the soldiers and anonymously had blankets and food delivered to them.
8. What had caused Arkansas Senator Thaddeus Caraway to say that the southern congressmen had "bowed our heads in shame in regret" over Mrs. Hoover?

Answer: She invited the African-American wife of a Congressman to tea and made a point of being seen shaking her hand

Mrs. Hoover supported equal rights. She invited Jessie DePriest to tea and made sure the other guests shared her views so as not to cause a scandal. However, she was unable to avoid criticism and there were motions to censure her in several Southern legislatures.
9. When she was still a Cabinet wife, Mrs. Hoover would speak to the press on whose behalf?

Answer: Mrs. Harding's

When President Harding died in 1923, Mrs. Harding became overwhelmed by the media. The Hoovers were with the President when he died and since she was a great speaker, Mrs. Hoover would deal with the press while Mrs. Harding grieved.
10. On January 7, 1944, Mrs. Hoover died. How?

Answer: She had a heart attack

She died 20 years before her husband.
