Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what body style was the Caprice initially introduced ?

Answer: 4-door hardtop.

The Caprice was introduced in 1965 as an Impala option. The next year, it became its own model.
2. With a Duntov 30-30 camshaft, what do the numbers "30-30" stand for?

Answer: Valve lash specifications with engine hot and running.

Knowledgeable hot rodders tightened the lash a couple of thousandths, to increase the duration.
3. What was Chevrolet's 1971 attempt to provide performance without insurance penalties called?

Answer: Heavy Chevy.

With increasing insurance penalties for "performance" vehicles, such as the SS or Z-28 models, all GM nameplates began introducing low-visibility marques, including the Heavy Chevy and Olds Rallye 350.
4. What appearance item was standard on a 1961 Impala hardtop, but not even an option on a 1962?

Answer: Bubbletop roof.

A carryover from the "winged warriors" of 1959-60, the bubbletop roof of the 1961 Impala was only available on the 1962 Bel Air model.
5. What 4-speed transmission was never used in factory-built Chevrolet?

Answer: Top loader.

The top loader was a Ford Transmission. Chevrolet switched from the T-10 to the Muncie in 1963, and the Saginaw for smaller displacement motors in 1967. I blew 3 Saginaws out in my 331 cubic inch '75 Monza. But they were cheap.
6. With which other cars did early Novas share the same front suspension design?

Answer: Ford Fairlanes.

The shock-on-the-upper-arm suspension design was shared by small Fords, including the Falcon and Mustang, and Rambler/American Motors vehicles. The distinctive shock towers that impinge on the engine bay of these vehicles is a dead giveaway.
7. You've saved your pennies, so now you trot down to your friendly neighborhood Chevy dealer and order a 1969 Chevelle COPO. What are you getting?

Answer: A base model coupe with an L-72 427.

For around $860, street racers could obtain the ultimate Chevelle sleeper.
8. What is the first thing you might notice when opening the hood on a 1963 Bel Air?

Answer: The generator is missing.

1963 saw the introduction of the alternator in most GM models. The smog pump didn't show up until 1966.
9. Which SS Chevrolet models did not have a "power dome" hood?

Answer: 1971 Camaro

Beginning in 1966, domed or scooped hoods were almost de rigueur on SS Models. It wasn't until the 1970 Camaro SS that the "smooth" look returned.
10. What could an extra $53.80 get the buyer of a 1961 Impala?

Answer: An "SS" package, which included stronger springs and sintered metallic brakes.

Other SS "goodies" included spinner wheel covers and narrow-band white wall tires.
