Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is considered the first outline of a system of government for any of the English colonies in America?

Answer: Mayflower Compact

This was signed by all male passengers on the Mayflower, and it laid down the basic outline for the government of the colonies.
2. What document forbade settling beyond the Appalachian Mountains?

Answer: Proclamation of 1763

The proclamation of 1763 set up a line along the Appalachian mountains. If you moved past the mountains you were no longer protected by the English government. This was because their economy had been drained from the French and Indian war and they couldn't afford to protect that area, which became shockingly clear after Pontiac's rebellion.
3. "These are the times that try men's souls..." Which document is this from?

Answer: The American Crisis

Thomas Paine wrote this to keep the men whose enlistment was running out, to urge them re-enlist and stay in the army. It worked: a lot of men stayed, and the revolution was a success ...
4. The Declaration of Independence starts with "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal..."

Answer: False

This is not how it starts, it starts: "When in the course of human events..."
5. This admitted Missouri as a slave state, and Maine as a free state, and stated that any states south of the southern Missouri border were slave states and all North of it were free states. Which of these was it?

Answer: The Missouri Compromise of 1820

The Missouri Compromise was enacted to end the feuding between slave states and free states. It was later replaced by the Compromise of 1850, which in turn was undermined by the Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854). This last led to "Bleeding Kansas", and eventually the Civil War.
6. What did the Emancipation Proclamation do?

Answer: Freed the slaves in the Confederate states

This document freed all slaves in the states under confederate control. This was a wise move on Lincoln's part, because had he tried to free all the slaves then the border states would have most likely joined the confederacy (the border states had slaves), which would have put Washington D.C. under Confederate control.
7. "... and that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not perish from the earth." What is this document?

Answer: The Gettysburg Address

This was after thousands who had died at Gettysburg inspired this and Lincoln made this speech in order to make sure they hadn't died in vain.
8. President F D Roosevelt made a speech beginning "Yesterday, December 7th 1941..." The main purpose of this speech was to persuade Congress to declare war on another country - but which one?

Answer: Japan

President Roosevelt made this speech on December 8th 1941, asking Congress to declare war on Japan, after that country's attack on Pearl Harbor. After that, Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. because they were allied with Japan.
9. What was the key aim of the Marshall Plan?

Answer: To promote economic recovery and growth

This plan played an important role in rebuilding Europe which had suffered extensive damage caused by World War II. The plan was also supposed to check the spread of Communism.
10. It took over 200 years to pass the 27th amendment, which details the earliest date on which salary increases for members of Congress may take effect.

Answer: True

This was actually proposed by James Madison when the U.S. Constitution was being signed, but it wasn't adopted until 1992.
