Wow, 10,000 points? Hmm... is it 10,000? (haha)
For me, I've gotta go with Bridge Over Troubled Water. I think it's especially beautiful and my mom wants it played at her funeral. That should make me hate it, shouldn't it?

I don't know Jen, I always stop counting after the first few hundred.

Let's do another Simon and Garfunkel duel:
America v Homeward Bound.

I'm voting for America, the images evoked in that song are pure gold, especially the game he plays with Kathy, imagining what the other Greyhound bus passengers are really like.

"Laughing on the bus, playing games with the faces.
She said the man in the Gaberdine suit was a spy.
I said be careful, his bow tie is really a camera..." Priceless!

Homeward Bound is also terrific, I must add.

P.S. Was that a rhetorical question about your mum? I don't know what to say Jen, apart from it's a stunning song. Your mum has great taste.

P.P.S. Has Paul Simon ever written an inferior song? I can't think of any offhand. Certainly none on There Goes Rhymin' Simon and Graceland.

I did consider it rhetorical :) She does have good taste in music, and I've always been grateful for the music she played while the family traveled. Oldies!

Me, I've got to go with Homeward Bound. Such a catchy tune. They do such good work, truly a great band.

Now I'll pit two ladies against each other, again by Simon and Garfunkel:
Cecilia
VS
Mrs. Robinson

Cecilia is fun. The song I mean, I've never actually met anyone called Cecilia, though I'm sure she'd be fun too. Anyone with Cecilia for a name would have to be fun.

Mrs. Robinson is simply a classic. And it was used in The Graduate, a terrific movie.

I enjoy both songs! Mrs. Robinson is certainly a classic. I know it better than Cecilia, but for some reason I'm picking Cecilia right now. I'm thinking of the fun beginning and it's fun! I just remembered you called it fun and that strikes me as funny!

And never lose your sense of fun. And your umbrella. Especially if it's raining.

Okay, a 20th v 21st century duel:
Iris by Goo Goo Dolls v Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol

It's like you shot me... oh, dear...
I learned and loved Iris before Chasing Cars. I dig the Goo Goo Dolls! But Chasing Cars is so good, and remains the only song I enjoy from Snow Patrol, as I don't know them that well. I actually have a lyric from Chasing Cars as part of the "favorite lyrics" thread:

“All that I am, all that I ever was, is here in your perfect eyes… they’re all I can see.”

Not that Iris isn't beautifully romantic itself.
This one is really hard for me! Longevity wise, Iris wins. I'm not happy. Wait, I am. I choose Chasing Cars. No, Iris. Chasing Iris. Iris Cars.
Uh-oh, you broke me with indecision over this! Gah!

Okay, Chasing Cars, it was my first gut reaction to seeing that VS.

Could not have agonised over it better myself Jen! I play Iris and I think, "Yep, this is better", then I play Chasing Cars and I change my mind. But then I ignore my emotional attachment and start analysing the two. Iris ends up winning. Fantastic string arrangements, fantastic vocal, fantastic song. And a fantastic album too. (Dizzy Up The Girl)

Chasing Cars has a fantastic vocal, and a fantastic sentiment behind it but probably less complex musically. And the album, Eyes Open, is basically variations on Chasing Cars, musically speaking.

Oh what the heck, they're both winners!

Your turn for next duel.

Maybe I should keep the albums the songs come from in mind when I can't decide the songs! I agree, Dizzy Up the Girl is pretty great. What's your favorite song from that album? I've got to go with Black Balloon. I adore that song.

Next VS:
Foreigner
Waiting For A Girl Like You
VS
I Want To Know What Love Is

I chose those songs because those are another set from an artist that it's hard to choose between. I loooooove both of them and sometimes it's like choosing which child to live!

Love Black Balloon Jen. And Acoustic #3. But somehow, Iris trumps them all.

Did you know Iris is not about a girl called Iris but about the Iris in an eye? That's why I've programmed Iris to precede Eye by Smashing Pumpkins on my CD downloads.

Not sure about Foreigner, I prefer their non ballads. The Damage Is Done maybe. Of the two you suggested, I'll go for the latter.

(Giovanni Cashi apologises for the rampant abuse of his Cannoli on the other thread, but says there's plenty more where they came from and if you ever go to Funkytown and dine at La Villa Strangiato he'll give you a few for free. Or should that be Free?)

One Fine Day by The Chiffons vs. Leader Of The Pack by The Shangri Las.
(Probably One Fine Day by the narrowest of margins)

Hey, you tell Giovanni Cashi I'm dying for some good Cannoli! Especially if it's Free, haha.

Close one for me too... two very cute songs that I don't hear as much as I'd like. I remember hearing Leader of the Pack for the first time and getting so sad. Narrow win for One Fine Day!

Next one...

The Grass Roots:
Midnight Confessions
VS
Let's Live For Today

(For me, Let's Live For Today wins... it's just so catchy!)

I am ashamed to say I don't know the band or those two songs. I'll grab a dunce cap and wear it all day, as punishment.

A few people here at work are dying to know what's with the dunce cap. I keep saying, "It's someone called Jen's fault.", and then I walk away. I wonder how long it will be before they go nuts and demand I explain.

I'm so sorry! The Grass Roots are an oldies band.
That doesn't make you a dunce for not knowing!! There are a million bands that have existed... there are surely some out there one may not know! It is I who am sorry for the VS suggestion.

You tell your coworkers dunce stands for
Does understand numerous, crazy ensembles or something.
Dude utilizes new, crazed enthusiasm
(I’m not good at this!)

How about Blondie:
Call Me
VS
One Way Or Another?

(One Way Or Another gets my vote... you can play it on a game called Guitar Hero and I get to play guitar to it and my sister does an awesome job singing that crazy part (("lead you to the supermarket checkout..."))... it's a fun song)

Oh, and tell your coworkers that Jen is the crazy one, haha!

I ended up telling everybody why I wore the dunce cap. They were all disappointed, they thought I might have done something really stupid instead of just not knowing a band.

I'll go for Call Me. The Autoamerican album has a long remix version as a bonus track. Sounds like fun, your guitar playing game.

Black Water by The Doobie Brothers vs Black Friday by Steely Dan.
(Doobies for me despite Steely Dan being among my all time favourite artists)

I've gotta go with Black Water as well. It's one of those songs I cannot ever recall getting a little tired of.

How about two songs with the same name but that's about all they have in common...
"Shout"
Isley Brothers
or Tears For Fears?

I enjoy both of these. Isley Brothers' Shout is so happy and nice... but Tears For Fears wins it big time for me... amazing song. Very inspirational for me.
