And we think we have it tough on Earth! Sort of puts things in perspective doesn't it?

I wonder if Biewyx eats Weetbix. Just a thought.

Okay...duel time again...The Ramones vs The New York Dolls.

My vote goes to The Ramones. I won't argue if someone says I'm wrong *although perhaps there is never a right answer* because my knowledge of both bands is limited.

Pick two more bands SFJ in case this thread fizzles out. Ramones for me though!

"Chewin' out a rhythm on my bubblegum
The sun is out and I want some
It's not far, not hard to reach
We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach."

"I don't

Incomplete posting, clicked on 'send' accidentally. Was going to write one line of another Ramones song.

Yep, never post when you're tired!!
Third line of Rockaway Beach needs word transposition. Far and hard.

Better one-hit wonder song: they came out the same year... "Come on Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners or "Mickey" by Toni Basil?

(for me? Come on Eileen, completely)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrgh!!!

Mickey is a candidate for worst song of all time.

Come On Eileen is a masterpiece, so too its parent album.

I shall overlook this lapse of yours SFJ, but DON'T DO IT AGAIN! (insert smiley face here)

(Spoiler alert: I don't like "Mickey" either! At all! That's why I completely chose Come On Eileen! I just thought of 2 one-hit wonders near one another that people would know)

I am so ignorant about music overseas. I really thought Dexy's Midnight Runners were unheard of in the States. I thought maybe they were a bit too Celtic. Always a good thing to achieve enlightenment on stuff like this.

Shall we continue with Mickey v Eileen in case others want to join in or can I suggest two more songs? Which I'll do regardless.

Dream On by Aerosmith or Dream Weaver by Gary Wright. Both came out in about 1976/77 here in Aussie Land.

My vote goes to Dream On. I personally just think it's a better song; I have nothing against Dream Weaver. What do you think?

Here's a random one: these both won Oscars for Best Original Song.

"Up Where We Belong" (from Officer and a Gentleman)
VS
"(I've Had)The Time of My Life" (Dirty Dancing)

I love both "Dreams". I vividly remember them being released and getting substantial radio play at the same time, when I was very young and buying one single (45's) a week. It was a toss up and in the end I chose Dream On. Never got around to buying Dream Weaver as it turned out but still love that song too.

Both songs you suggested come from girly films starring two actors I can't stand which I think makes me the wrong person to ask which is a pity since I usually like Joe Cocker and Bill Medley. Unfortunately the songs remind me of the films and the actors therefore I refuse to like them, which I never did anyway. It's just a guy thing, sorry. Pick two more Jen.

I'm so behind on this one.

"Come On, Eileen" for sure. "Mickey" is just awful.

Um... Now I have to look at my next options. Hold on...

"Dream On" for me. I don't like "Dream Weaver." But I do like Aerosmith and Steven Tyler. I wouldn't want to be alone with him, but I like his voice.

I'm not crazy about either of the Oscar-nominated songs, but I do love Joe Cocker. However, that dance to "Time Of My Life" is fun if you can figure it out, and trust someone enough not to drop you on that lift.

I vote, if you can dance to it, it's the better song. Sorry, Joe. Not this time.

But Joe would win, big time, for "You Can Leave Your Hat On!"

"Baby take off your coat
Real slow
Take off your shoes
I'll take off your shoes
Baby take off your dress
Yes, yes, yes

You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on"

Joe gives me reason to live.

Hahaha I'm not too high on either, but "Time of My Life" gets the nod for me. Like you, sectant, I'm not one for many girly-girly movies.

Blackdresss, I really like that philosophy! I think I generally go with that too, which one is better to dance to.

Trying to decide which artist I'm more sick of... Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran. I'm sure they're nice people and all, but I feel like I should be able to turn on my radio without having to hear a song from one of them, you know?

The thing that really, really, really, really bugs me about that 'Nobody puts Baby in a corner' scene from Flirty Dancing is the way the Swayze character showed a total lack of disrespect for the parents. If that had happened to me, I would have knocked that smug git through the wall. Horrible, horrible movie, totally overrated, extremely implausible, dumb dances, awful songs.

As for Richard Gere, if you want to see genius, track down his appearance on Michael Aspel's chat show where Barry Humphries in his Dame Edna Everage persona really takes the mickey out of him.

In fact, Dirty Dancing was one of the reasons I stopped writing movie reviews for a university magazine. As a reviewer, you need to watch movies you wouldn't usually see. And since I wasn't getting paid for these reviews (the main reason I stopped) it seemed pointless to torture myself like that.

Also, my wife at the time wanted to see it. So we watched it on video (remember those things?). And if you think I was scathing in my previous posting, she was doubly so when we watched it together.

I think I still have the review somewhere, I must try and find it to see exactly what I wrote. All I remember is the little explosive device symbol, indicating it was a bomb. Another thing I remember is the letters of protest from uni students who went to see it and loved it. All two of them. And the sixty five letters telling me my review wasn't scathing enough. Ahh, the good old days!

No, no, no, the dances were great fun! It's why it was called "Dirty Dancing."

The best dance was when he was trying to teach her (Baby) to dance, and she wasn't getting it, so his beautiful partner turned on the music, and put Baby in the middle, and they all danced together so she could see it, feel it, and then finally get it. But the two original partners have their eyes locked.

Then, she's still having a hard time, and cracks herself up, but evolves until he's on the floor, watching both girls dance, together, in their heels (which is really hard -- try it sometime) so Baby can figure out not just the moves, but also the ambiance. And everyone is all sweaty...

And she finally learns how important eye contact is when you're dancing and you have to follow. Someone has to lead, and it has to be him. That's not easy for a lot of people. At least as the girl, you don't have to do everything backwards, unless you're left-handed, but it's still hard to follow unless you stop thinking, completely. It is for me, anyway. But dancing is all about losing control for the girl, and trusting your dance partner.

It's my favorite scene. It's probably a lot of peoples' favorite scene. But maybe you have to be a dancer to fully appreciate it. It's not the best film in the world, but the dancing is great.

I think the song was "Hungry Eyes." Watch it again. I'll bet it's on YouTube. In fact, hold on...

5.6 million views. The last 30 seconds are a waste of time, but the rest of this is fun. You might gag, Sectant, but that's okay. We're having a conversation. And Jen, what do you think of this dance scene?

Yeah, but it's Swayze!!!
On the other hand, Jennifer Beals in Flashdance. My kind of dancer!

Put it this way...If I had to choose between Dirty Dancing and Ghost, I'd choose self immolation!!

Hungry Heart v Maniac. Which is the better song?
(Maniac is from Flashdance)

Self-immolation? Haha!

Oh, I definitely know Flashdance, too. I'm trying to think if there is a dancing movie I don't like.

I vote "Hungry Heart" because... you can dance to it!

Not everyone can dance to "Maniac."
