Ding ding! Step into the ring if you'd like and discuss artists/bands VS other artists/bands. Anything goes!

Santana definitely. They do a great Black Magic Woman on the Moonflower album. A live recording seguing into an instrumental titled Gypsy Queen.

Strange looking word, seguing. Should the letter e be there? Segueing. No, probably not. Blending perhaps? Yeah, I'll stick with blending.

"Magic Carpet Ride" or "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf?

I love both, Jen, but I'm going with "Magic Carpet Ride."

'Well, you don't know what
We can find
Why don't you come with me, little girl?
On a magic carpet ride

Well, you don't know what
We can see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me?
Fantasy will set you free"

Another band I've never listened to and Born To Be Wild is the only song I know, courtesy of radio, and films it's been used in.

Let's fast forward a few decades. Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana or Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins. It's a dead heat, can't separate them.

Oh, I love Nirvana and wouldn't know a Smashing Pumpkins song if it bit me on the thigh.

Hold on, I'm going to listen to it right now so I can give you an honest answer.

Grunge is just so weird...

I listened to live versions of both songs.

I gotta go with Kurt, all the way, although this isn't my favorite Nirvana song. But it's "entertaining."

And in the live concert video of Nirvana, Kurt isn't wearing his grungy moss-green hole-y sweater, he's wearing what looks like a hospital smock with ties in the back.

Smashing Pumpkins is one of only two bands I would fork out a squillion dollars, if necessary, to see in concert if they ever toured here. The other band is The Cure.

And Suzanne Vega.

Would you like to select two more?

Magic Carpet Ride is where I'm going with that. It's a good song!

I'm so sorry, I know both songs there with Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana are iconic, but I don't like either. I have to admit it. Local radio stations play both so much that I've gotten sick of them. Please don't hate me for admitting that!

Jen, it's okay to hate whoever you want. You're lucky though, our radio stations are very ordinary, Disarm and Teen Spirit are the only songs ever played and only ever on one station. If I want my Pumpkins fix, I'll listen to their albums on CD.

How about two great dance tracks that are also great songs to just listen to?
Rapture by Blondie versus Le Freak by Chic

Absolutely "Rapture" by Blondie.

Sectant, your taste in music is so diverse.

The Smashing Pumpkins AND Suzanne Vega!

I'll come up with the next to comparisons, after Jen has weighed in on this combo. Or maybe before...

As you get older Blackdresss, you learn to open your mind a bit more about music. And getting into classical music helped in my case, I am much more aware about arrangements and orchestration. If I can give you just one example, the string arrangements on Iris by Goo Goo Dolls are extraordinary and something I wouldn't have bothered to even notice when I was younger.

Smashing Pumpkins has a genius as a leader. And Suzanne Vega writes and sings great songs, it's as simple as that.

I appreciate your comment about diversity, especially since tons of Aussies are only interested in Aussie bands.

Gotta catch up!
My tastes are fairly diverse, too.
Definitely Nirvana, I too wouldn't know a Smashing Pumpkins song if it bit me on the thigh, either, and if it tried, it would be a Smashed Pumpkin.
Blondie anytime.
Did Suzanne Vega do 'Luka?' I really, really love that song.
And I was sometimes a goth in the eighties, so I like a bit of The Cure, too.

Did you know there is a track by Sting called 'Russians' which samples a little snatch of Prokofiev's 'Lt. Kije?' That's a beautiful song, made even better by the sneaky addition of a bit of classical. Which also happens to be my favourite bit of classical.

I love "Iris," too, but John Rzeznik wasn't crazy about adding those strings...

I'm trying to find a good article where he talked about how freaked out he was when he first sat down and saw that string section, and wasn't sure how he felt about it.

You're spot on, Luka is Suzanne Vega. Or Lucre by Suzanne Vegas. (see Fake Album Titles)

I hope John R. changed his opinion about the strings after he heard the Iris playback. A great song made even greater. I can understand though, it was probably his baby and it's similar to some authors hating film adaptations of their own novels. Kesey and Cuckoos Nest a good example.

I'll go with Rapture too. Le Freak gets boring after a while, Rapture never seems to. Plus it's Debbie!

I found a great interview with J. talking about how freaked out he was when he sat down and listened to them add the strings, and what he said to his bandmate, but it won't let me copy and paste it in here.

Let me try another site...

The song "Iris" just kind of fell into him. He thought it was a "gift." Here is a clip from one interview that I know is accurate, although the freak-out factor was higher than this:

Rzeznik recognized "Iris" as one of his greatest achievements to date. But it wasn't until he was recording it that he realized how far the song had taken the band from their punk roots.

"That was the first time we'd ever been in the studio with strings," he recalls. "I remember kneeling in front of the control room window, looking out at this 15-piece string ensemble, then looking at Robby (Takac, bassist) and saying: "I really think we're turning a corner here, and I don't know if I want to."

And when they made the video for "Iris,"with all the spinning he was doing in that chair, the telescope kept hitting him in the head!

Iris is on City Of Angels soundtrack AND Goo Goo Dolls own album, Dizzy Up The Girl. One of my favourite album titles and album covers. The girl lying down is so cute!

She's very cute. She's a makeup artist.

The "City Of Angels" Soundtrack is on my list of Perfect Albums. It's bubble bath-worthy.

In fact, "City Of Angels" has a great bathtub scene. Somewhere, I have a list of Movies With Great Bathtub Scenes. "Original Sin" is one. "The English Patient" is another.

My two favourite bathtub scenes:
Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis in Artists And Models. Just thinking about it makes me crack up laughing.

An incredibly suggestive but ultimately innocent scene from a 1932 movie called Freaks. You will be totally blown away by the entire movie. Set in a circus with all sorts of "freaks", plus a midget in love with a beautiful, normal sized woman who herself is in love with the circus strongman. Directed by Tod Browning. The bathtub scene involves a circus clown and another beautiful woman and as I mentioned, it seems a bit risque until the twist at the end of the scene. I think it's up on Youtube or Dailymotion. Check it out!
