"Pretty Woman" has a great bathtub scene, with Julia Roberts singing along to Prince's "Kiss."

You want me to watch a clip from a film called "Freaks"???

Okayyyyyyy… but I don't do scary, so keep that in mind.

Let me see if I can find it.

I can't find it, but there are other scenes from "Freaks," and Eeeeek… not my kind of film.

I may have to watch John Rzeznik spinning around in that observatory again to get those images out of my head!

It's not scary by modern standards and is more black comedy, thriller, melodrama. The use of actual circus freaks is/was offputting to critics and audiences but they're treated with respect. We're on their side all the way through the film. It's only just over an hour long, so maybe one day you'll give it a go.

First off, I'm with Rapture by Blondie, she's great!

Secondly, Iris is definitely a keeper! The City of Angels soundtrack has some good ones on there, Elle!

And also... "Freaks" is a really good movie (you need good horror movie recommendations... you can come to me!). It was banned in many countries, but the reasons were ridiculous. We see the "freaks" (I don't like that term) doing normal, everyday things, showing they're much like the rest of the people who pay to see them.
It was originally over 90 minutes long, but that version I guess cannot be found, leaving us with a movie barely over an hour long.

We accept her, we accept her...

And Leila Hyams, who played Venus, is one of my favourite actresses from the 1930's. My all time favourite is the stupendously magnificent Louise Brooks.

Do you remember that bathtub scene Jen? Phroso the clown is in the bath while Venus is standing over it watching and talking to him. The first time I saw it, I'm thinking "Hang on, it's a 1932 movie and a woman is watching a man taking a bath." And then he gets up, fully dressed. He wasn't taking a bath at all! He was in it for a different reason. So cleverly filmed!

And the so called pinheads, Schlitzie and friends. The Ramones song Pinhead ends with a whole gaggle of voices repeating the words, "We accept her, one of us!"

Fabulous film Elle, I hope you get around to watching it.

Thanks Jen!

I think one of you should pick the next duel.

I can't and don't really do "scary," Jen, because I live alone and I can't afford to scare myself. Books are the exception, depending on the book, but movies are out. So what do I do? I tune into "Psycho" the other night accidentally, right at the beginning, and I truly did watch it all the way through for the first time, ever, but I looked away during The Shower Scene. I've read too much about that scene, and how Big Al terrorized Janet Leigh much like he did poor Tippi, by making her do that scene over and over and over. She said she was terrified of showers from that day forward.

Okay, here is the next matchup, and why I feel like a big, fat traitor for liking Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and even the Goo Goo Dolls. I'm trying to decide which song I want to go with for the first band. The second choice is obvious, and as much as I want to post videos to go with them, I don't know if it's safe. And, I like my music live, and one of these bands is incredible live; the other one, not so much.

Let's try this, and if you need videos, I know of two that will work, both live and "official":

"Piece of Me" by Skid Row

or

"Welcome To The Jungle" by Guns N Roses

(After these two songs, I can go with ballads from both of them, too. Those videos would be safe to post.)

Welcome To The Jungle definitely, definitely, definitely. It made Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 greatest songs of all time, though when you consider there's been at least 456,789,543 songs written and sung since God knows when, how could they possibly have heard all of them! Those polls are meaningless really, but Jungle is certainly a fantastic song.

Agreed, but I'm going with Sebastian Bach singing "Piece of Me," especially the live version on SNL. He hits a note that isn't humanly possible.

Sebastian Bach has the most beautiful voice, and he's a Viking! 6' 7 inches of Viking. Axl Rose is all falsetto. I like them both, and I like both bands, but I'm going with Bach and the Boys, all the way on this one. They can sing live and sound as good as their albums; GNR, not so much.

Check this out, and trust me, you'll know when he hits that note. It's just pure and clean, no autotune, and every time I watch this, I am blown away. I'm sure the audience was, too:

What's SNL?

You'll have to fill me in on Skid Row, I thought they were one of those awful 'hair' bands of the 80's like Motley Crue and Poison.

At that height, Sebastian Bach (is that really his name?), should be a basketballer.

Did you watch the video? It's worth it, I swear!

SNL is "Saturday Night Live."

Sebastian Bach's real name is Sebastian Bierk. He changed it to Bach when he was trying to come up with a good rocker name, and it was J. Sebastian Bach's birthday, and his name was in everything he was reading that day.

He's a Viking with a vocal range of an angel. He doesn't need to play basketball. And he was probably... 19? 20? in that video.

You do know Axl Rose isn't really his name, right? There's allegedly a story behind that, too, but I don't know if I will tell it in here.

Sebastian Bach and Axl Rose were and remain very good friends, and toured together one summer. I think it's a fair match-up for which song is better than the other.

I still vote for "Piece Of Me" because of Bach's beautiful voice. And his beautiful hair.

P.S.

I had the craziest dream the other night about Sebastian Bach and Slash from GNR. Bach was bouncing around like a little puppy, but Slash was telling me exceptionally philosophical and meaningful things, and I was completely spellbound. I didn't want to wake up.

I love dreams like that, that make zero sense at the time, and continue to make zero sense afterwards, but I just can't quite shake them. This dream is one I plan to go back into, because we weren't finished with our conversation.

I gotta go with "Welcome to the Jungle." I mean, there's fun and games there (haha).

sectant, "Freaks" was so bold! So clever and bold. That's really cool of The Ramones to use that sample!

Elle, I get it! If I lived alone I might be singing a different tune. I read scary books too, but I had to make a rule for myself years ago: not at bedtime. I ALWAYS read before I go to sleep but I would get so into my books that I would start waking myself up. Now it's usually magazines!

Saturday Night Live is pretty popular in America. You won't find many who don't like it in some capacity, one skit or another.

Saturday Night Live, heard of it, never been screened here.

Elle, one day you'll cotton on to my humour, I hope. It's my fault I guess for always trying to look for an opening in that regard i.e the basketball and Sebastian Bach comments.

I never watch videos, I prefer just the music, no visuals, but I'll clickety click on the linkety links asap to checkout a few of those previous recommendations, including Seb.

If Skid Row are one of those 'hair' bands though, off goes the vid!

Are you sure he's a Viking? The recording industry began in a later era, surely!

Oh, am I ever. He's a Viking, I'm a Viking, wouldn't you like to be a Viking, too?

If GNR and Skid Row toured together, and if both front men had long hair, and were best friends, and they all liked to rock out, does that make them both "hair" bands?

Listen to Sebastian Bach hit that high note, with his head down, no less, so effortlessly. I do like to watch my music. And if they can't play live and still sound good, I don't respect them as much.

But if you can't bear to watch Skid Row on SNL Live from 1991, blow that entire audience away and melt their faces off, I can do a GNR vs. Skid Row power ballad next.

Sectant! This just came up in a public tournament I played in. I'll try to find the quiz, if it's not a single question. I guessed at the second two bands, since I was flying through them, and then it wouldn't let me go back. It could have been Metallica and Motley Crue:

9. Which of the following "hair metal" bands had a No. 1 song?

Skid Row

Guns N Roses

Poison

Cinderella

Your Answer: Guns N' Roses

Guns N' Roses stormed to the top of the charts with "Sweet Child o' Mine", in 1988.

Once again, I failed to explain things properly. Or maybe I don't know as much about music as I thought......

In the 80's, mainly early to mid, there were certain bands like Motley Crue, Poison etc who I always thought were rock lite. It wasn't the hair that bugged me, it was the songs. But they did have that universal description of 'hair' bands.

I have no real knowledge of Skid Row but just assumed they were from that era and part of that 'hair' bunch. Or bunch of 'hair'

If I had a brain, I'd look them up on the Net, but I always like asking people to fill me in.

Guns N Roses were a bit later here, and I considered their music to be pure rock if not metal.

I'll give Seb a try and report back asap.

Hope this clarifies.

I am waiting anxiously!

Meanwhile, let's try two power ballads by both groups:

"I Remember You" by Skid Row

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa-y5RjL1vg

vs.

"Patience" by Guns n Roses

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErvgV4P6Fzc

These are both official videos, so they are going to sound exactly like the songs on the albums.

Elle, I saw Seb perform in "Jesus Christ Superstar" all the way back in I think 2003. I forgot to mention that! I'm not one for musicals but it's a rare one I like.

And eh, labels are usually messed up or wrong, anyway. Bands or artists can be labeled "pop" but not really BE pop.

RE: live performances, I'm fine if they're not too good; I'll stick to listening to their albums. One guy who really sounds great is Darren Hayes. Listen to any live song of Savage Garden and it almost sounds exactly like the album!

Or even BE bop! (Go back over your last posting!)

I'm asking one more time, out of sheer bloody mindedness and because I like to pretend now and then that access to instant facts is not available and people in the know are the only source of knowledge, like the pre Internet days:

ARE SKID ROW EARLY 80's, MID 80'S, LATE 80'S OR POST 80'S?
