Ding ding! Step into the ring if you'd like and discuss artists/bands VS other artists/bands. Anything goes!

Tears For Fears for me as well. That was a great little era in music, that sort of new wave period, with bands like Orchestral Manouevres In The Dark and Depeche Mode etc. So I'll continue with....

Safety Dance by Men Without Hats vs You Will Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties by Jona Lewie.

I'm going with Safety Dance. It kind of makes me laugh! I had never heard of You Will Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties, but I am like that in real life so that's cool (haha).

Next: The 5th Dimension

The Worst That Could Happen
VS
Wedding Bell Blues

Dunce cap time again! The only two 5th Dimension songs I know are Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In and Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All. I should check their other stuff out.

Sorry! Since you know those two, how about
Age of Aquarius
VS
I Didn't Get Any Sleep At All?

(for the former VS, I choose Wedding Bell Blues. That and The Worst That Could Happen are really great songs! I have a song with both together, as The Worst That Could Happen is a man realizing the woman he loves is getting married and saying "it's the best thing for you, but it's the worst that could happen to me". And Wedding Bell Blues is like the response, "Am I ever gonna see my wedding day? ...come on Bill... I got the wedding bell blues..."

I did have a best of CD of theirs but I only bought it for the two songs I mentioned, which I downloaded. Instead of listening to the other tracks, I gave the CD away to one of those charity stores.

Last Night I DIdn't Get To Sleep At All is my pick. A stunningly beautiful vocal by whatever her name is. It's either Marilyn McCoo or the other one. I think it's the other one.

Just looked it up. The other one is Florence LaRue.

Forgot, it's my turn to pick...

Two songs from Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys masterpiece.

Wouldn't It Be Nice? vs Sloop John B.

Sloop for me. This has to be one of the great tracks of the 60's. Perfect in every way.

Hopefully I can't mess things up here.........Sloop John B for me, too, I've heard Wouldn't It Be Nice used in jingles too often, and I prefer the mellow melody of Sloop.

Season Of The Witch by Donovan V's Witchy Woman by Eagles?

Hey Umber!

I think if there's any messing up, it will be me, because I'm picking Witchy Woman for a non musical reason. It was used as a plot device in a classic Seinfeld episode.

My fave Donovan song is Catch The Wind.

My fave Eagles song is Too Many Hands.

My fave word is 'fave', not that I should 'fave' one word over another. Unless it's a word like Axolotl.

Marilyn McCoo of the 5th Dimension has to have one of the best voices ever. It’s strong, yet sweet, and so beautiful. I love Age of Aquarius, for when I first listened to it… I had never heard anything quite like it before.

For the Beach Boys, I have to go with Wouldn’t It Be Nice? It’s just such a happy little song!
My twin adores Season of the Witch but this is my vote, and mine is Witchy Woman! It gets played at Halloween a lot too, which is always a happy bonus. Oooo, Witchy Woman…
How about the Doobie Brothers:
Long Train Runnin’
VS
Listen to the Music

(this one is so hard for me to choose it almost makes me cry!)

Long Train Runnin'. That cool harmonica solo is the clincher.

(I have a vivid memory of sitting in the loungeroom when I was a kid and hearing Listen to The Music on my dad's massively huge combination radio/record player. The song was the Doobie's latest hit and it was the first time I heard it. But being so young and dumb and stupid, I thought the words were, "Listen To The Newlyweds." All these years later, I still substitute 'Newlyweds' for 'Music' when I hear it, just for a laugh.)

Whoa-oh-oh, listen to the newlyweds! (Haha, next time I hear that I will totally remember that!)

That's so cool you remember the first time you heard a song. Most I can't really, but there are a few I have distinctive memories of... good times.

Two different James Bond themes:

You Only Live Twice by Nancy Sinatra vs Nobody Does It Better by Carly Simon

Carly wins this one.

Yup, I must concur, I've gotta go with Carly too!

How about comparing summer songs:

In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry
VS
Summer in the City by The Lovin' Spoonful

Both are fun but I love my Lovin' Spoonful!

(Another 10,000 points if the final bit of your last posting was written intentionally. I mean, you do know why they called themselves that, don't you?)

Summer In The City hands down. In The Summertime unfortunately had two versions here. Mungo and an Aussie band called The Mixtures. Even as a kid, I thought it was an annoying song. Some novelty songs need to be erased from all radio station data bases everywhere, all recordings should be tracked down and destroyed, the writers and performers should never be allowed to write and perform again, investigative committees should be set up to ensure this kind of thing never happens again, and apologies should be issued all round. Just a suggestion.

Malibu by Hole vs Cherry Bomb by The Runaways

Oh haha! I realize what I wrote there about the Lovin’ Spoonful… whoops!

You better believe me when I say I agree about the desire to destroy some songs and forbid some people from ever writing any more songs!!!
It stinks, because one of my favorite radio stations has this annoying habit. If an artist has a new song out, they’ll play that one and then an older track right after (sometimes literally back-to-back). I hate it. If it’s a band I hate (like twenty one pilots, which just released a new song), it’s like for the next 8-10 minutes, that station is essentially dead to me. Even bands I like… I wouldn’t want to hear their songs so often. Sometimes it really backfires and I get really sick of their songs (sadly, like Imagine Dragons, where right now they’re playing them all the time).
Sorry, random rant over.

I’ll go with Malibu for your VS, but I admit I don’t know those two too well—but I’m glad I do at least! :)

Here’s more randomness from me:

Memphis by Johnny Rivers
VS
Walking In Memphis by Marc Cohn

Walking In Memphis. Terrific song.

Synchronicity 1 v Synchronicity 2 by The Police.

I have to go with Johnny Rivers (Memphis). I really like Walking in Memphis but I love Johnny Rivers’ voice!
For Sting… oof… leaning toward Synchronicity II.

Our Lips Are Sealed (Go-Go’s)
VS
Kiss On My List (Hall & Oates)

And so Jen includes Our Lips Are Sealed as one of the songs, exactly two days after I order the Go Go's album Beauty And The Beat on CD. Had that on vinyl ages ago, wanted to listen to it again. Amazing how you chose that without even knowing I'd ordered the album. There are two songs on that album that I distinctly remember liking a lot, so here they are as the next duel:

Automatic v Fading Fast
