But I would also like to say that while a lot of people have done covers of "Smokin' In The Boys Room," no one did it like Brownsville Station. No one!

And live is always much more fun:

That's the thing about music, even though it's universal, we all have our favorites. Music is just like baseball, I can try my hardest to convince someone that the Cincinnati Reds is the best baseball franchise on the planet, but if they are a St. Louis Cardinal fan, they will scoff at me and tell me that the Cardinals are the greatest franchise. Just like that with Judas Priest and The Beatles and Elvis Presley or even for some Elvis Costello. We're going to like what we like and dislike what we dislike, but civilized people can agree to disagree. It's called dialectic discussion.

Yeah if you think you can just Run To the Hills and claim music universality without delving into those two bands..well...

Omg. Unbelievable Bruno Mars video, Elle. I had no idea he did that. Pretty boss Brownsville Station vid as well. However, I actually think Motley Crue's version is better and more rocking, and I tend to feel that the originals are better than the remakes at least 90% of the time. I feel that a band can only make so much of a point or a statement with a cover song simply because it has already been done by someone else. So in order for me to like a remake more than the original, it really has to have something noteworthy going for it.

It's funny that you should mention Name That Tune, Elle. When it comes to classic rock from the 60s and 70s, which is, relatively speaking, a pretty tiny little window, I've never known anyone in my life who can come even remotely close to naming tunes as fast as I can. I don't know how many I can name in one note but I'm more than certain that it would be up in the thousands. Once again, most of those would fall in that tiny little window, but a good number of them would fall outside of that and also be of different genres of music.

Here's something I don't exactly go around talking about because there is really no point in it. It's not like I can listen to a song one time and be able to do this, but if I know a song well enough and I am just simply given silence, I can click a stopwatch, play the song in my head from start to finish, give you the running time of that song, and there is no way I will be off by more than a second or two. Unless I wanted to become some kind of a sound tech or something, which I could have easily become, it is a total waste of a talent. I mean, even if I sat there and gave someone the correct time to a song in front of a million people, all someone would have to do is claim that I simply had it memorized and there would be no way for me to prove them wrong. So it really is a totally useless talent unless, as I say, you are some kind of sound tech, but when I say that I can name thousands of songs in just one note, I'm really not joking around one little bit. With all of that being said, I really can't tell you how much fun it would be for me and how excited I would be to play Name That Tune with you, Elle. It's just too bad that it will so likely never happen. But if you should ever happen to visit Tulsa, well, you BETTER look me up, girlfriend! Even if we don't get to play Name That Tune, you still better look me up! :-p

That was very well said about your thoughts about music, Mark. You see things above and beyond the way that the majority sees things when it comes to listening - and I mean truly listening - to music of any kind. The key to really appreciating music, which I'm sure everyone here on this thread knows, is just simply to listen to it objectively in every way, which is something the majority of people - the vast majority - don't seem to be capable of doing.

Generally speaking, most music fans feel like their favorite guitarist is the best guitarist in the world, or their favorite band is the best band in the world, or their favorite whatever is the best. They think the stuff they like is great and the stuff they don't like is just awful, and 99.99% of these people would have no idea what to do with a musical instrument if it were handed to them on a silver platter.

Another thing that has always fascinated and amused me at the same time is the way that a lot of peoples opinions about lots of subjects are just simply things they are repeating from others who have influenced them. For example, little Tommy from Podunk Iowa has an older brother who feels that Jimmie Hendrix is the best guitarist who ever lived, so now Tommy goes around talking about how Hendrix is the best guitarist in the world for the rest of his life. When Hendrix came along, he did certain things with a guitar that no one had ever done before him, and it obviously convinced tons of people that he was the greatest guitarist ever. In reality, even on the best day he ever had in his life, Hendrix would not even make the top 500 guitarists, not any list that was made by a certified expert on the subject. Anyway, some people's kids, right? :-p

God, look at what you guys have done - got me started on music. See what you made me do with this jillion mile long post? And YOU, answerman, look at you mentioning the unholy names of songs by the likes of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. In the name of GAWD, young man! I didn't know this was about DEVIL music. You stop that! :-p

Okay, time for a little Christmas cheer after that little satanic tirade. I posted this link on my Buddy blog but now I will post it here for all of you to behold in all its angelic glory. Some of you may possibly be quite surprised when you discover who this is, but I hope it won't be any kind of an unpleasant shock for you. Not my style to even try to cause things like that to happen to people, especially not my friends. Merry Christmas to all of you and your loved ones...............

I accept your challenge of Name That Tune, Kevin.

Motley Crue's version is good, granted, mostly because it's faster and their video is professional. But they didn't write that song. And everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school.

Ever notice how they say "Now teacher, I am fully aware of the rules" or maybe it's "your" rules toward the end of the original, but then Vince is like "Now teacher, I ain't foolin' around with your rules." Sometimes I really wonder if people change a few words around on purpose, or in this particular case, if they honestly misunderstand what the original lyrics are actually saying and they just don't bother to check them out. I mean, I think it's pretty cool when bands change a few words around deliberately when they do covers, just like it's very cool when a singer changes a few words to his own song when they are doing it LIVE. Sorry, I just can't say the word LIVE (as in "in person") without stressing it like that.

In fact, my favorite lyric change in the entire metal-ravaged universe? The award goes to...........(drumroll)..........Great White's cover of Substitute by The Who. The original is like "Substitute your lies for fact, I see right through your plastic mac..." and then the Jack what's-his-name from Great White is like "I see right through that SATAN CRAP".
Man, if I only had the words to describe the charge I got from that the first time I heard it. I mean, you are talking to a guy who thought about the concept of Christian metal right about a year before Stryper busted out on the scene and got Christian metal started. I was obviously not the only one with that idea, but I did have it before it ever existed. I even came up with a name for my little Christian metal band many years ago - Inna the Namah of Gawda. Ha! Man, I still love that to this day! I say unto you, brethrenah........By the way, that Great White cover is one helluva butt-kicker if you have never heard it. It's right there at your fingertips just waiting for you. In fact, that entire album - just simply titled "Great White" is a straight up rock and roll outlaw masterpiece. Every song on it is a boss-rocker.

Your mama told you, baby
I'm not the man for you
And what your daddy told you, darlin'
Ain't nothin' but the truth

I'm a rocker, I'm a roller
I'm a stone cold drinkin' man
I'm gonna give you lovin'
The only way I can
Don't you worry, baby
I'll be there by your side

Out of the night, I come to take your love
Out of the night, I've got to have your love

I'm a reckless outlaw, a renegade by trade
All I've got is this guitar and that's HOW IT'S GOT TO STAY
I'll find time to love you, you know I'll do it right
I'll find time to love you, and I'll make you feel alright.......

I knew I was forgetting something. Pretty bold words about accepting a Name That Tune challenge from the likes of me, Elle, especially since it's just a little bit impossible to do over the internet. But you just keep right on dreamin', girlfriend. :-p

Not taking sides here Kevin, but I've never known Elle to brag about something she can't do. Geographically, where is halfway between Kevin and Elle. I would be willing to be the Host/Moderator.

Oh, trust me, I am SO up for this challenge! No problem, at all. Because, I know allllll the songs.

We could always Skype, I suppose, but there could be a problem with lag on one side or the other, and that wouldn't be fair.

Hmmmmm... we'll have to figure it out.

We could always use YouTube, with songs uploaded there, then make that account private so only the three of us could access it? That might work?

Mark as moderator is perfect!

"No more pencils, no more books
No more teacher's dirty looks, yeah!
Well, we got no class
And we got no principals
And we got no innocence
We can't even think of a word that rhymes!

School's out for summer!
School's out forever!"

"We can't even think of a word that rhymes" is One Hilarious Lyric!

Well, Mark, I've never met anyone on this website in person, so it's really a little bit impossible for me to say what they can and what they can't do, but I would surely be fascinated to learn your secret, brother. You definitely don't have to believe me when I say I can do the things I say I can do, I don't have anything at all to prove to anybody. People who are insecure about themselves are the only ones who have things to prove to others.

I don't know the first thing about the Skype thing or the You Tube thing, I'm not to savvy about stuff like that, but whatever you guys can work out is fine with me, I'm game. Just let me know. :-)

I never really considered myself to be any more remarkable than the next person, but thank you. I think most people are remarkable in one way or another. There are some things I am better than most people at, and then some things I am just average at, and other things I am probably below average at. I think just about everyone who was ever born has some kind of talent or capability somewhere that goes above and beyond the norm.

Kevin,
Did you miss the part where I said I'm not taking sides?
I said not one word demeaning you. I only said that I feel like I know Elle a little better than you so far, and as much as a face to face guy can trust someone that he(me) has never met, I trust that what Elle says is true. You both know music better than I do. I don't sugarcoat truth, but as a former car salesman, I know how to verbally dance.

Mark

Let the games begin.

Mark, that is so kind of you! Thank you!

Mark is also flawless, I'm convinced.

And our dear friend Kebbin, who adores that crazy Sheriff, Dorkus, is also a completely stand-up guy.

Okay, group hug...

Chargin', vein faced, as active as 100 solid proof.....

Did you not know they did this? I mentioned it when you first mentioned that you were into Skid Row. Ol' Sebastian obviously knows his Priest. This is the greatest metal anthem that will ever exist.

We'll beat you to submission
So you might as well surrender
You gotta learn your lesson
Cause there ain't nobody here to defend your heart........
