Subject: Thank God for Buddy Holly

Posted by: sadwings
Date: May 14 17

This is about everything rock and roll from the 50's to the present, but that's only the beginning. Any poets out there? I have a couple of poems to share before too long. Misunderstood song lyrics are always a lot of fun. Favorite album cover art? Any wild or interesting concert experiences? Prefer Motown to rock? Jazz? Blues? You can share all of these things and much more here. Come one come all to the midnight ball! Let's do this!

I was saddened to hear of Dr. John's passing; his music has had a lot of playtime at my house over the years. Kev, you're right about the drug charges; he was basically unwelcome in his home town of New Orleans because of this, but I'm glad to know he made it back. Dr. John gave many people their start in the music biz. One of them was a dynamite singer named Shemekia Copeland, daughter of blues guitarist, Johnny Copeland. Give her a listen sometime. Sorry to have been gone from the chats for so long - lots of Dr.'s appointments and some travel out of state. Hope to be back on the movie chat very soon - during my downtime, I've been watching some killer Noir. Anne

Good to hear from you again, Anne. Hope everything is well with you. I will definitely give Shemekia a listen to when I can. Hope to hear from you again soon!

Had to clear that last image off of my whatchamacallit and I couldn't figure out any other way to do it. It would be great if someone could let me know how to do that. I'm thinking about adopting a new avatar image for a while. Isn't that album cover on the last post the coolest? :-)

This is what you guys would have had to look at for a while every time I popped up anywhere, but I can't get it to take this one either. I cannot for the life of me figure out how I got this last avatar image to take, but I did somehow or other. Now I can't change it to anything to save my life. :-(

Well, I finally figured it out, as you can see. Evidently I can only use photos that are very small or they will be too large to be accepted. That guy is pretty dorky looking to be called a Metal God, ay? Well, that is indeed what they call that guy. Not making that up, he really is the metalliest metal god of all the metal gods since the very beginning of time. That's roughly 13 billion years worth of metal gods. :-)

Hello! I've never been sure how to paste links on here so I won't be trying that. Probably end up deleting the whole thing ;)

But I can give you a run down of my fave groups. I was born in the mid-80s, but for me a lot of the great groups/singers came long before. I particularly like the Bee Gees, Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys, Everly Brothers, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison are epic too, wonderful wonderful singers.

Music for me stopped in the early to mid 2000s with the rise of the whole download and internet newbies. I did go through a bit of a boyband phase in the late 90s....but hey, I was a teen ;)

My cazzy pal on my Buddy blog! :-) Very nice to see you here, Caz.

Very interesting little list of particular likes you have in the music arena. I was kind of surprised at some of them, considering when you were born, but I know that doesn't always mean one's interest is going to be limited to any given eras. Our friend Cat is another good example of that. I believe she is right around the middle between you and myself in age, and she likes lots of stuff that goes back way before I was even born.

I have an older sister by 6 years who is a big Bee Gees fan. She really liked them and The Carpenters when she was in high school. Those were the years that I was all into Motown and Three Dog Night. Back before unholy terrors like Judas Priest came along and completely ruined my good taste in music. :-(

Even my mom likes some of the stuff on your list, like CCR and the Everly Brothers, and I'm sure she probably likes a lot of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, as do I, of course. I had developed a fascination for music at quite an early age and I'm really not sure why, I mean, nobody in my family has ever been musicians or been involved with music professionally in any way, and while they do like music probably pretty much the same as most people, none of them ever took a liking to it to the same degree that I did. Not even remotely close, actually.

Anyway, by the time I was old enough to be alone in the house without a baby sitter, which I'm not exactly sure when that would have been - 8, 9, 10 years old, I really can't remember - I used to love to listen to the records that belonged to my mom and sister and brother, who is 5 years older than me. Loved to do that pretty much every chance I got, and I remember one of the albums I loved to listen to was from CCR. I can't remember the name of it but it had Green River on it. Just loved that twangy guitar and Fogerty's bluesy voice. Woops, I hope I spelled his name right just now.

Here I am naming this blog after Buddy Holly and you probably know more about the guy's music than I do. I just wanted this thing to be kind of a tribute to all rock and roll from its very beginning, and its title was just the first thing that popped into my mind. Obviously nobody can take credit for single-handedly inventing rock and roll, but from the rather large handful of artists who got the ball rolling, Mr. Holly probably comes closer to leading that wild, out of control pack than anyone else. Thank God for Buddy Holly indeed! :-)

So you were into those boy bands for a while, were ya, caz? Hee hee! You stop that, you ex-teenager, you! :-p I'll tell you a little secret. Just remember that I am a gargantuan rivet head straight from the mean streets of Metalville, so don't tell anyone this as I have that serious metalhead reputation to maintain, but, well, I am a pretty big fan of Justin Timberlake. Go, Justin, go! :-) Actually, it's not because of his music, I am a big fan of his comedy work over the years, namely the stuff he did on Saturday Night Live and a few hilarious videos he made with other SNL guys. I know he is a great singer with some pretty good dance moves, as I have seen him perform quite a number of songs, but he really has a lot of talent in the comedy department as well. A lot of people are talented in both areas, but for one to be exceptionally talented in both areas at the same time is pretty rare, in my opinion.

Well, it looks like time is kind of getting away from me, caz. This has been so much fun talking to you. Do stop by again soon! :-)

Oh my word, please never stop posting! Even on the dullest, most depressing day, just reading what you write could cheer the grumpiest grump up.

I only had my mum and dad's music as a kid, I'm an only child, so a lot of the groups I mentioned were their influence on me. My dad is a huge Stones fan too, although that never followed on with me.

Some newer groups I failed to mention that I like: Biffy Clyro, Green Day, Muse, Nirvana. I'm sure there's countless others that have escaped my brain for the time being.

And your Mr Timberlake secret is safe with me ;)

Wow, caz, thanks for the nice compliment about the goofy stuff I write. Amusing people and putting a smile in their day is my main objective with most of the stuff I write, and I wasn't even really trying to do that with that last post. If you really feel that way, I have a feeling you would really like the beginning pages of this blog, where it seems like I poured most of my energy into trying to accomplish that. It didn't take long at all and I quickly began to lose that desire because there were just way, way too many things I posted that I felt were pretty amusing that not one soul ever said a single word about. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't like I was looking to be showered with praise every time I ever said anything, but I'm pretty sure you know what I mean. Oh, there were lots of people contributing lots of stuff in the beginning very frequently, but you know how it goes when certain things happen time after time after time. Just kind of starts to get pretty old after a while. In all honesty, I strongly believe I just had the way wrong kind of audience for what I was trying to accomplish. I'll just leave it at that.

A lot of great examples of what I'm talking about are some of the misunderstood song lyrics I've come across over the years that I threw down here and there throughout the first pages, like maybe the first 10 or so. A lot of it is stuff that's pretty amusing, provided that #1, the person reading it has at least somewhat of a sense of humor, and #2, that person hasn't already formed some kind of mental block against me. There are those out there - here on this website and elsewhere in the world - who would be very quick to jump right in the big middle of this and point out that not everyone has the same sense of humor. People who have never read what I'm talking about to begin with, and people who don't need to read it because they have already formed their iron-clad opinion on the matter. These are the people who have already formed their little mental block, for whatever reason. I have experienced this kind of thing my entire life, and I wasn't exactly born recently. Oh, it's a very, very small percentage of people that I'm talking about, looking at the whole picture - if that tells you anything - but they have always been out there somewhere, out there lurking and Sheldoning around in the shadows just waiting to pounce on me with their geeky philosophies that only the most seasoned Sheldons can relate to.

Anyway, I really don't mean to go on and on about myself as if to say "Look at me, look what I can do" and blah blah, but I guess the subject just kind of came up and I've never been one to back down from any subject, believe me. ;-)

Oh, my, caz, this Biffy Clyro stuff is so loud and aggressive, I'm a bit surprised that you would like music this aggressive. I am very frightened by this kind of music and now I am frightened of you! :-( No, I'm only clowning around. Can you believe I would do such a thing? :-p I had never heard of them so I looked them up and checked them out. I thought at first that maybe they would be from Australia but I discovered they are from Scotland. Definitely a different kind of groove they've got going on.

Not bad letters to work with. My team is called the Kilted Kangas and the other day I was almost able to spell "Kangaroo." All I needed was an N and I had 3 chances to get it but I never got it. :-( I wish they would give us blank letters every now and then that we could make them be any letter we wanted. That would be the coolest! :-)

Last word I made was Elephant. I thought about holding on and messing around with strategy games to try and wait out an 11 letter word, but I just liked the word Elephant way too much, especially after Mix's post in the Too Cute (Animals) thread recently.

Reckon I'll just have to go and check that out sometime today when I can get around to it. Been quite a long time since I even looked at the Animal section. Seems like that's one of the many sections where most of the threads on it go for weeks or even months with nobody posting on them.

Good Word Wizard collections! After submitting a word yesterday I was left with D O H which is very appropriate much of the time.
