Subject: An Homonymous Endeavour - COMPLETE

Posted by: FatherSteve
Date: Aug 20 18

Thank you for the many fine suggestions of definitions to use in this endeavour. There are far too many; they have been reduced accordingly, some by combination with other and some by saving them for another day. Here are the definitions on which quizzes may be built:

Beat (n.) a notation of the rhythm of music, of its cadency, of its rate and measure. As in the Uncle Kracker-Dobie Gray song, it says "give me the beat, boys, and free my soul; I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away." As in Gloria Estefan's 1994 recording "Turn the Beat Around."
Completed by Ponycargirl.

Beat (v.) to defeat another, to win, to be victorious, to prevail over or against. As in the Food Network TV programme "Beat Bobby Flay."
Completed by Joepetz.

Beat (v.) to strike another person repeatedly with malicious intent. As in to beat up or to beatdown. To give someone a thrashing.
Completed by Kyleisalive.

Beat (adj.) a genre of literature or a writer associated with that genre in the 1950s and early 1960s. The movement was typified by interest in Eastern religion and rejection of Western social values. Examples include Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs. This is not the same thing as beatniks but there was some crossover.
Completed by Rossian.

Beat (n.) a subject matter to which a newspaper or other media reporter is assigned for coverage. Typical beats for journalists include local government, education, police, religion, business and sports.
Completed by Shadowmyst2004. Twice! Thrice, even!

Beat (n.) a geographic area to which a police officer is assigned for patrol.
Completed by RedHook13.

Beat (v.) the movement of a bird's wings or of a helicopter's blades.
Completed by Gracious1.

Beat (v.t) to vigorously mix foods by stirring with a whisk, a spoon or a mixer. Beating rapidly incorporates air into the mixture and makes it smooth and light
Completed by FatherSteve.

Beat (v.) to be found not guilty of a crime or to escape punishment for a criminal charge, as in "to beat the rap." In "The Untouchables" (1987), Frank Nitti says to Eliot Ness "I said your friend died screaming like a stuck Irish pig. Now you think about that when I beat the rap."
Completed by Reedy.

Beat (n.) the sound one's heart makes, the pulse, measured by a sphygmograph. Huey Lewis and the News sang "They say the heart of rock and roll is still beating." Edgar Allen Poe wrote, in "The Telltale Heart": "But, for many minutes, the heart beat on with a muffled sound."
Completed by 1nn1.

Beat (n.) to be exhausted, to have spent it all on a long day's work, to be worn out. As Gabby Hayes said in many B Western movies in the 30s and 40s, "I'm plumb tuckered out" which was the equivalent of being beat.
Completed by Creedy.

Beat (v.) to engage in circumlocution, to delay or avoid the a principal and unpleasant topic by talking all around it. In the US, "to beat around the bush"; in the UK, "to beat about the bush." The term probably evolved from the earlier literal expression, "to beat the bush" which follows.
Completed by Kyleisalive.

Beat (v.) to make a racket in the bush so as to drive wild game, especially birds, in the direction of the hunters. The process involved thrashing the underbrush with long sticks causing a terrific noise. Sometimes birds were shot in this manner; other times they were netted.
Completed by Reedy.

Beat (v.i.) to sail a ship to windward using a series of alternating tacks across the wind. Beating is a method of sailing upwind by making a sig-zag course to accomplish indirectly what cannot be accomplished directly.
Completed by WesleyCrusher.

Authors are invited to select any one definition/meaning that they choose from the list and identify it with a message to this thread. Thereafter, no one may claim that definition/meaning. If you are undecided and find yourself impaled on the horns of a dilemma trying to choose, send me a PM and I'll assign one which you may then identify to the other players with a message to this thread.

Authors write and submit a ten-question (normally) quiz in fulfillment of the mission. If you wish to write a longer quiz, drop me a PM and say why. You may submit your quiz in any category that's appropriate to its content. It might be helpful to the editors if you identified your quiz as one submitted in fulfillment of the glorious quest proposed by this challenge.

You may write more than one quiz in this exercise but please do not claim a second one until your first one has been submitted, accepted and placed on-line for play. When your quiz goes on-line, inform us all by posting a note to this thread identifying the quiz title and category. Kyle will add links to completed quizzes to the list of definitions/meanings chosen.

The game continues until there are no more definitions/meanings left.

What's better than two, but three. I completed the trio on forms of journalism. If only I thought I could come up with podcasters and bloggers, I'd do a 5-part series. Maybe someday.

I would like to claim for myself the definition following:

"Beat (v.t) to vigorously mix foods by stirring with a whisk, a spoon or a mixer. Beating rapidly incorporates air into the mixture and makes it smooth and light"

Big surprise that I would opt for something culinary!

I just submitted "Foods that Take a Beating" (#394915) in Hobbies. Assuming its acceptance, this will bring to seven the number of quizzes inspired by our little exercise. And there are several others claimed but not yet posted. Well done, one and all, and thank you.

And I played it and enjoyed it a lot! Well done! I had my eye on that definition too, but these days I am not as inspired as I was a couple of months ago, and need to take things easy.
