While travelling down the Carrock pursued by the Orcs, Bilbo notices a very large bear is also tracking the party and informs the others. Gandalf seems familiar with the animal and tells the others there is a dwelling nearby where they can find shelter. The group finds refuge in the home.

At the end of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", Bain hid the black arrow so that when Bard was arrested it would be safe. When Bain sees his father has escaped from prison, he leaves his sisters and the Dwarves to go retrieve the black arrow for his father. He brings it to his father and acts as the bow for his father to shoot Smaug. The arrow hits its mark and Smaug is slain.

The Dwarves went to go visit the Elves because they needed help reading the map. If you recall what happened in the movie you will remember that Elves were the ones who told the group about the moon and how to find the key.

Captured by trolls, Bilbo and the dwarves are about to become dinner. Bilbo picks up on the fact that the trolls cannot be out after sunrise. He also catches a glimpse of Gandalf, who has returned. Bilbo buys some time getting the trolls talking about the best way to cook the dwarves, eventually suggesting that they shouldn't be eaten at all because they are infested with parasites. The people look to him as their leader so he leads them to Dale at the foot of the Lonely Mountain. Prior to Smaug's attack on Erebor many years ago, Dale was a thriving human city that traded freely with the fortress and the Dwarfs. Dale was abandoned after Smaug took over Erebor.
