Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is NOT necessary to do when getting ready to play?

Answer: Cleaning the instrument

Though it is recommended you clean your violin often, it is not necessary to do so every time you play.
2. Without this, you wouldn't be able to play your violin properly.

Answer: Bridge

The bridge is the arched, carved piece of wood that the strings press down on. It serves to transmit the vibrations of the strings to the body of the instrument. The closer to the bridge you play, the brighter the notes.
3. On sheet music, what Latin term tells you to return to bowing from plucking?

Answer: Arco

Pizzicato tells you to pluck, staccato tells you to play short, quick notes, and crescendo tells you to slowly increase how loud you're playing.
4. Which of these does a standard violin not have?

Answer: C string

The strings on a violin, in order from lowest to highest, are G, D, A, and E -- no C. The end pin on a violin, by the way, is not like the end pin on a cello -- it's a fitting on the tailpiece, and the tailgut winds around it.
5. True or False: A 3/4 size violin is three-fourths the size of a full-size violin.

Answer: False

Violin sizes don't have anything to do with the proportionate sizes of the instruments. A full-size violin is 14 inches long, a 3/4 size violin is 13 inches long, and a half-size violin is 12 inches long.
6. What is the primary function of the "waist," or "C-bouts"?

Answer: Bow Clearance

The waist provides the familiar "hourglass" shape to a violin's body, but besides the appearance, it allows the bow full access to all of the strings.
7. Which of these does NOT affect the pitch of a string?

Answer: How fast it is played

Though the speed of the bow may affect the tone of the note, the pitch is affected only by the length, tension, and density of the string being played.
8. True or False: All experienced players prefer newer violins.

Answer: False

Over time, the wood and glue in a violin age, improving the tone of the violin. However, while many experienced violinists prefer older violins, there are a number of them who prefer newer violins, rendering this statement false.

Answer: Catgut

Catgut, contrary to myth, is actually from a sheep's intestine. Today, strings are made from gut, different types of steel, or other synthetic materials. Horse hair is used for the bow.
