Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the pretty-shaped holes in the body of the violin to either side of the bridge?

Answer: f-holes

This is where the sound comes out of the resonating body.
2. What is the name of the lowest string on a violin?

Answer: G

The strings are G, D, A, E in ascending order.
3. What is the interval between each string and the next on a violin?

Answer: a fifth

The same as the cello and viola, but the double bass is in fourths.
4. The violin is the highest-pitched instrument in the string section of an orchestra. True or false?

Answer: True

The next highest is the viola, then the cello, and the deepest orchestral string is the double bass.
5. The most commonly-played arpeggio involves playing which notes of a scale?

Answer: first, third, fifth and eighth

To play an arpeggio the player successively plays each note and then back again, as many octaves as you want, but like a scale always ending where you started.
6. Some violins have no fine tuners, or just one, but what is the maximum number of fine tuners possible on a violin?

Answer: 4

One for each string! The fine tuners are in the tailpiece and each string is attached to a fine tuner.
7. What is the term for plucking the strings of a violin?

Answer: pizzicato

Some pieces have sizeable sections in pizzicato.
8. It is customary practice to end on an upbow, especially if the song ends softly. True or false?

Answer: False

It is customary to end on a downbow- it looks nicer. A downbow is when you draw the bow from your wrist end to the far end. When playing in a group, all players should end on a downbow together.
9. What is the name of the part that is clamped on to allow you to hold the violin under your chin?

Answer: chin rest

A violin is quite difficult to play without a chin rest. Combined with the shoulder rest, they make a comfortable support for the violin, though you can play without either.
10. Which clef appears most often on violin music?

Answer: treble clef

The viola usually uses the alto clef and the cello most frequently uses the bass clef.
