Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What colour is the skin of a polar bear?

Answer: Black

The skin of a polar bear is black with two layers of fur on top. The fur layers reflect the sun in the arctic regions making them appear white. Underneath the fur is a layer of black skin. This can be seen if the polar bear has scars.
2. Which of these mammals can live at the highest altitude?

Answer: Yak

Yaks can live up to altitudes of 20,000 feet (6,100 meters). Wild yak normally live in Asia and can also be found in Eurasia. They normally live on mountains and can reach weights of up to 1000kg.
3. Whales are mammals.

Answer: True

Whales are mammals as they give birth to live young and have mammary glands. Many people mistake them for fish as they live under water but fish lay eggs whilst whales produce live young.

Most mammals give birth to live young but monotremes lay eggs. The monotremes are the platypus and the echidna.
4. Which humped mammal, known for living in desert environments, has types called Bactrian and Dromedary?

Answer: Camel

The Bactrian camel comes in two varieties, wild and domesticated. The wild ones live typically in Mongolia and some parts of Northern China.

The Dromedary camel is found in Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
5. Which mammal, native to Australia, has a red coat and is closely related to wolves?

Answer: Dingo

The dingo normally lives in packs with strong hierarchies consisting of ten or more members. They normally eat small mammals such as rabbits but they have been known to attack humans on occasion.
6. The two types of elephant are European and Asian.

Answer: False

Elephants are broadly divided into two types: African and Asian. They can be characterised in three ways. Firstly, the African elephant has larger ears than the Asian elephant. Secondly, the African elephant has a rounder head than its Asian relative. Finally, both male and female African elephants can grow tusks. Only the males of the Asian elephant can do the same.
7. Which mammal, closely associated with China, typically eats a diet of bamboo?

Answer: Giant panda

The giant panda tends to feed on bamboo and therefore lives typically in bamboo forests. Interestingly, most pandas around the world belong to China.
8. The red squirrel is the native species of squirrel in the UK.

Answer: True

The more commonly seen grey squirrel was introduced to the UK in the 1800s from North America. It has dominated the red squirrel and taken over the habitats so that it is quite rare to see a red squirrel now. The best place to see the red squirrel in the UK is the Highlands of Scotland.
9. Which orange and black striped mammal, native to Asia, is a strong swimmer and a member of the cat family?

Answer: Tiger

There are nine different types of tiger and they typically live in Asia. They like the water and are strong swimmers. The tiger is classed as an endangered species and conservation efforts are underway to boost the number of tigers in the wild.
10. Which mammal is the only one capable of true flight?

Answer: Bat

The bat is the only mammal that can fly using wings. The sugar glider can glide but cannot generate lift from their wings like bats can.
