Question 1 of 10
1. Bats are generally small, eat insects, and are scared of humans. However, some bats have very scary names, such as the vampire bats in Central America that drink animal blood. There's another bat in the same area with a different but still spooky name - which is it? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Have you ever seen a parrot that looks like a goth? The Dracula parrot is mostly black with shades of dark grey and flashes of bright red on its wings, bellies, and tails, giving this bird an outfit that Vlad III might have been proud of. It looks like a bloodthirsty vampire with bad table manners - but what does the Dracula parrot really eat? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. This lizardy thing has a name after my own black heart, it's the satanic leaf-tailed gecko. It has more camouflage than an army. It can lose its flattened tail which looks like a decaying leaf, it has spines on most other parts of its body, and lumps above its eyes also help to make it blend in with the irregular background of a forest. However, when the gecko is threatened, what else can it do? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. This critter appears to be looking at you through a skull on its thorax. It tastes with its feet and has both Asian and African members of its family. Some of the African species migrate to the UK where they are the largest of their kind - some are larger than some of the native birds. Like the birds, they flutter and some even chirp! What creature is this? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Fortunately, if you go out trick-or-treating, you're unlikely to find this spooky thing in your neighbourhood as it lurks about 2-3000 metres (6-10000 ft) underwater, waiting for someone to throw it a bone or, more likely, for a whale to die - because they eat bones. Their Latin name translates as 'bone-devourer' but what other spooky name do humans call them?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The vampire squid doesn't feed on blood but gets its name from the webbing that connects its legs and make it look like the squid is wearing a cloak, just like any regular vampire. Depending on the lighting, the vampire squid's eyes can appear either red or blue but there is something else about their eyes that distinguishes them from all other animals; what is that? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. We all know that Darwin found some unique finches in the Galapagos Islands but what we rarely learn about is that one group of finches on those islands feeds on blood. Vampire finches don't only eat/drink blood but when they do, it's the blood of another bird, usually the same sort of bird. What silly-sounding birds do vampire finches feed on?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Imagine a young caterpillar that spends its life munching plants so that it can grow up into a beautiful butterfly. But what if something, such as a parasitic wasp, laid its eggs inside the caterpillar and its babies ate bits of the caterpillar from the inside out so that when the caterpillar eventually turned into a butterfly it had bits missing and wasn't quite so pretty. What would you call the butterfly then? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Walking along the seashore can be so romantic but mind where you tread, because if the ghosties don't get you the sea goblins might! This fish is brightly coloured, either red or yellow, and it blends in with the sands or corals where it lies in wait for unsuspecting prey. It usually doesn't move very far but when it does, it uses a rather strange method for a fish. How does it get about on the seabed? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. If you want to visit a Halloween hermit crab in its natural habitat you need to visit some reefs in both the Indian and Pacific oceans and in particular the sandy slopes that lie around the reef edges. The crab isn't very big, only about 5 cm (2 ins) long, and it lives in the discarded shells of other marine creatures, such as snails. However, it's noticeable because of its brightly striped legs. Given the crab's name, what do you think is the main bright colour in the stripes on the crab's legs?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bats are generally small, eat insects, and are scared of humans. However, some bats have very scary names, such as the vampire bats in Central America that drink animal blood. There's another bat in the same area with a different but still spooky name - which is it?

Answer: Ghost-faced bat

The ghost-faced bat lives in Central America. Let's be honest, it looks weird, except to its mother - and she took the fifth. Its face looks like it lost a boxing match, its nose looks undeveloped, its forehead starts at its nose, and its ears meet on its forehead. If that's not enough, it has flaps of skin hanging from its face that make it look like someone threw a small sheet over it, hence the name. Ghost-faced bats rely on a form of echo-location that bounces back a sound made by the bat itself, a mix of rattling chains and moaning noises.

Answer: Fruit

The Dracula parrot is also called the vulturine parrot, because most of its head is covered in skin rather than feathers and it has a hooked bill useful for getting inside fruit. However, the more correct name for this parrot is the Pesquet's parrot which is rather strange as firstly, no one seems to know who Pesquet was and secondly, no one knows how to spell it. Pesquet, Pequet, Pesky parrots are all used for this bird's name.

Answer: It can scream

The satanic leaf-tailed gecko has more camouflage tricks than most other creatures, which, given the number of hostile creatures there are in the Madagascan rainforest, is probably a good idea. However, sometimes looking like a leaf, staying still like a leaf, and discarding what seems to be a leaf might not be enough. So, when attack is the best defence, the gecko will let out a scream.

It may also squirt you with bright orange foam but only at Halloween.

Answer: Death's head hawk moth

The thorax of the death's head hawk moth has a group of short yellow hairs that look like a human skull. If you disturb one of these moths it might do something weird - it might squeak at you. However, if you can get close enough to take a good look, you might spot a nose, two eye sockets, ears, lips, and two satanic horns.

Answer: Zombie worm

The largest of these creatures are about the size of a human's little finger and the smallest ones that you can see are about the size of an eyelash. One thing you should know about the most of the ones you can see is that they're the females; you can't see the males because they live inside the females. Want me to repeat that? It's all to do with reproduction - the females produce eggs via a mucus tube, the males live in the tube and when the eggs appear, the males pounce. Well, most of them use that method but there are some species where the males have a life of their own and fertilise females via their own tubes; this type keep their sperm in their heads. And then there are the zombie worms with no heads at all!

Answer: Proportionately the largest eyes in the animal kingdom

Of course, the largest eyes in the animal kingdom belong to the colossal squid which is a much bigger creature but in proportion to its whole body size the vampire squid wins hands - or arms - down.

Unlike regular vampires, the vampire squid is covered in "photophores" that produce flashes of light. Vampire squid seem to switch on their lights only at certain times of the year, such as the end of October.

Answer: Boobies

The Nazca booby and the blue-footed booby are the two main victims of the vampire finch's ability to draw blood and drink it. The finches are much smaller than the boobies but quite often several finches will draw blood from the same booby at the same time.

It is thought that this behaviour was originally beneficial to both birds as the finches would clean parasites from the boobies' feathers but over time it seems that the finches have given up doing this and now just take the blood. Rumour has it that the finches turn red at some times of the year just to draw attention to themselves.

Answer: Zombie butterfly

This process affects both butterflies and moths, and can be caused by parasitic insects or by viruses. It's not in the interest of the parasite to let the caterpillar die or pupate until its own young have emerged or, in the case of viruses, infected another host. Once that process is complete, the caterpillar can pupate, then turn into a butterfly - but the butterfly will probably have major components, such as its head, missing.

Some fairy tales about young parasitic wasps say that eating butterflies makes the wasps turn into moths.

Answer: It walks

It walks. The sea goblin has pectoral fins that are each made up of 10-12 rays. On each side of the body, two of the lowest rays are separate from the main fin and are used to lift the front of the body and move the whole fish along as though it is walking.

Sea goblins don't have many scales but they do have lots of venomous spines so try not to tread on one. Despite this, because they look happy the Latin name for sea goblins includes the term for friend - amicus.

Answer: Orange

You can also see Halloween hermit crabs in lots of aquariums. It's an attraction not only because of its bright colours but also because it will clean the tank. Halloween hermit crabs eat all sorts of things, including algae and bacteria, so if you want a sparkling tank, add a crab. Be careful though - hermit crabs can be very friendly and watching them kiss fish might be embarrassing!
