Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Primary set of links

Answer: Main Chain

Primary means something that comes first, or is fundamental, hence is a synonym for MAIN. a CHAIN is composed of a number of small members, called links, which are connected together. My necklace has a main chain from which some smaller chain loops are suspended.
2. Angry supervisor

Answer: Cross Boss

Someone who is angry can also said to be irate, or CROSS. A supervisor is someone who monitors the work of others, and can also be considered their BOSS. When the underlings make mistakes, they may find themselves facing a cross boss.
3. Fast elevator

Answer: Swift lift

Something which moves quickly can be called rapid or SWIFT. The UK term for what Americans call an elevator is a LIFT. If people are travelling up or down for a large number of floors, they appreciate having a swift lift to reach their destination sooner.
4. Chillier large rock

Answer: Colder boulder

Something which seems to have a lower temperature than its surroundings or neighbours can be described as chillier or COLDER. Rocks have names that imply their size: a pebble is quite small, while a BOULDER is definitely large. If you have ever cleared the snow off the top of a stone wall, you will know the feeling of a colder boulder.
5. Lofty barrier

Answer: Tall wall

Something which is lofty has significant vertical extension; it could be said to be TALL. A barrier prevents passage from one side to the other. This could be a fence or a WALL. Walls may indicate a boundary, or they could be the vertical portions of a building which separate the interior from the exterior. A building with high-ceilinged rooms will definitely need tall walls.
6. Slipshod reproduction

Answer: Sloppy copy

Something which is completed without care is slipshod, or SLOPPY. A reproduction may be authorized or illicit, but it is always a COPY of the original. A counterfeiter who makes a sloppy copy is likely to be apprehended.
7. Final explosion

Answer: Last blast

The final or LAST item in a series brings it to a conclusion. An explosion involves destruction of something from within, usually by means that create a rapidly expanding movement of the gases in the air. This is also called a BLAST. A series of explosions to demolish a building may culminate in a last blast.

The kind of boisterous entertainment indicated by my children telling me they are having a blast may be loud but is rarely destructive.
8. Head robber

Answer: Chief thief

While the head is a body part found in many animals, its use here is in reference to the person in an organisation who is in control of the others, just as the head functions as the control centre for the body. Someone who is the head of the organisation could also be called a CHIEF, a word meaning the leader of a group of people. If that group happens to be engaged in stealing the goods of others, he is a head robber or chief THIEF.
9. Dingy science room

Answer: Drab lab

Something which is dingy or dull lacks sparkle, and may be called DRAB. A laboratory, or LAB for short, is a room specially designed for the conduct of scientific investigations. While the activity that goes on there may be exciting, the rooms themselves tend to be low key in decor, or drab labs.
10. Evening illumination

Answer: Night light

Technically, evening comes before NIGHT, but they both refer to a similar time of day - and people use them to describe slightly different times anyway, so my nighttime (after I have gone to bed) overlaps significantly with my ex-husband's evening, when he is just getting warmed up for his evening's performance as a musician. One usually wants the room to have better illumination when awake rather than asleep, so the LIGHT level is often reduced at bedtime.

However, if complete darkness is not desired, a night light might come in handy.
11. Simmers tomes

Answer: Cooks books

Simmers, boils, bakes, fries, roasts or toasts are all alternative terms for COOKS food. Tomes are BOOKS, usually large and heavy, often on a scholarly subject. Many cookbooks (collections of recipes) are large enough to be considered tomes. Someone who cooks the books is engaged in an illegal accounting practice, either to avoid tax or to conceal some other illicit activity such as embezzlement.
12. Overdue appointment

Answer: Late date

An overdue library book is one that was not returned at the stipulated time, and arrives LATE. An appointment is an arrangement to meet someone. This is usually a business meeting of some sort, but could be a social DATE. If I expected the person with whom I had made an arrangement to meet to be there at 7, and they didn't arrive until 7:30, that is a late date.
13. Uninterested peer

Answer: Bored Lord

If one has lost interest in surrounding events, one could be called BORED. While a peer can just mean someone of the same social status as oneself, it can also be used as a shortened form of Peer of the realm, and refer to a member of the nobility, a LORD.

When the British House of Lords is sitting, there are probably a number of bored lords in the room at times when tedious debate drags on.
14. Cowardly string instrument

Answer: Yellow cello

A coward can be colorfully described as yellow-bellied, often shortened to YELLOW as an insult. There are a lot of types of string instruments - including violin, guitar, ukulele, harp and more - but only the CELLO rhymes. I have never seen a cello which is literally yellow - they are usually a reddish brown in colour. Neither am I sure why a musical instrument might be afraid, and inclined to act in a cowardly manner - perhaps it got too involved in its role in 'Peter and the Wolf', in which it was one of the instruments representing Peter?
15. Rapid young bird

Answer: Quick chick

A movement at high speed can be fast, rapid or QUICK. The young of many types of bird is called a CHICK. When a mother hen sends out a danger call to her offspring, you will see a bunch of quick chicks scurrying for safety.
