Just because one is a celebrity does not give one a license to become a Goodwill Ambassador. Those that are selected are respected figures who possess a strong ethical compass and their fame should be such that it will transcend borders. This will allow them to reach and influence a broader and more diverse audience. In a similar vein, the United Nations would be looking for those that are articulate and able to communicate to that audience, and it would go without saying that the ambassador in question would need to be passionate about their cause and demonstrate a genuine dedication to it.
The advantages of using celebrities in this manner is that their status draws media coverage which will, not only have the capacity to augment their messages of advocacy, but it can also be used to influence public opinion in a positive manner.
The stars listed above fall into four categories of Ambassadorship and each brings their own special cause to the table:
Emma Watson became a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014 and not only promoted gender equality but was also a strong advocate for women's empowerment. In a similar manner, the Australian actress, Nicole Kidman had previously taken on a similar mantle in 2006, focusing on bringing an end to violence against women. American and Zimbabwean actress, playwright, screenwriter, and producer Danai Gurira, who is best known for role as Michonne in the horror drama "The Walking Dead" (2012-20), became a UN Women Ambassador in 2018 to bring attention to gender equality, in particular, the platform of women's rights. Oscar winner Anne Hathaway was appointed UN Women Goodwill ambassador based on her advocacy for gender equality to add to her resume of work with charities such as the Creative Coalition, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the Human Rights Campaign.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, better known as the UN Refugee Agency, was established in 1950 to assist millions of displaced people across the globe, be they stateless, asylum seekers, or refugees who have fled their countries due to war, violence, or persecution. Their banner has been hoisted by the likes of Cate Blanchett, Ben Stiller, and Angeline Jolie, the latter serving a long term as both a Goodwill Ambassador and as a special envoy.
The UNICEF Children's Fund has benefited from their promotion by two famous football (soccer) stars in David Beckham and Lionel Messi. Both have been strong advocates for global initiatives that have promoted children's health and education. In addition, Katy Perry, whose 2010 studio album "Teenage Dream" spawned five US number one singles, was appointed as an ambassador to the Fund in 2013. The UNICEF report indicates that she'd traveled to areas such as Vietnam and Madagascar to highlight the needs of the vulnerable and to raise awareness of UNICEF's emergency relief fund. In 2016 she was honoured by the organization with the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award. Perry's former husband, Orlando Bloom, had been involved with UNICEF since 2007 and was appointed an ambassador for them in 2009. His work took him to Nepal, campaigning for sanitation and education programmes, and the city of Sloviansk in the east of Ukraine in April 2016 to raise awareness of the falling standards in education in the war-torn country. Bloom would return to the Ukraine again in 2023 to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to continue this work.
The Messengers of Peace in the list above are Charlize Theron, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jane Goodall. Theron was appointed in 2008 on the back of her dedication to improve lives of women and children in the country of her birth, South Africa. She has constantly campaigned against violence against women, and, in 2014, recorded a public service announcement to aid the UN's "Stop Rape Now" initiative. DiCaprio was appointed on a platform for climate change in 2014. In the same month of his appointment, he delivered the opening statement to members of the UN Climate Summit with a speech estimated to have reached in excess of one billion people. The English primatologist Dame Valerie Jane Morris Goodall had always been a strong advocate for environmental conservation, and this saw her elevated to Messenger in 2002, using her status to advise organizations such as Save the Chimps and the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks.
