Goldberg would go on to be a multi-faceted celebrity across numerous forms of media, with her career beginning in 1983. Her career really kicked off acting in Steven Spielberg's "The Color Purple". Goldberg has won numerous awards in her career, including an Oscar.

She has stated she drew inspiration for the name 'Whoopi' from the whoopee cushion, "When you're performing on stage, you never really have time to go into the bathroom and close the door. So if you get a little gassy, you've got to let it go. So people used to say to me, 'You're like a whoopee cushion.' And that's where the name came from." Her mother suggested adding Goldberg rather than Cushion as a last name because it sounded more professional.
