Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To start, who is the "Girl on Fire" from the dystopian "Hunger Games" trilogy (movies and books)?

Answer: Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen is the protagonist and revolutionary icon in the "Hunger Games" trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Her costume in the murderous reality program of The Hunger Games was lit on fire in a genius idea by her fashion manager to gain publicity for her participation in the competition. Her second entrance into the Games featured a costume that burned and transformed as well.
2. What title does Stephen King's character Charlene "Charlie" McGee take from her pyrokinetic powers?

Answer: Firestarter

Charlie McGee is a pyrokinetic character who ends up on the run from government forces who would try to violently investigate her powers. Her parents end up caught in the crossfire trying to protect her.
3. Billy Joel's classic song "We Didn't Start the Fire" includes three of the following explanations of why the speaker did not, in fact, start the fire. Which is NOT a lyric of the song?

Answer: We don't keep the lighter

"We Didn't Start the Fire" is a sort of history lesson describing American political and social events of the mid/late twentieth century. He protests that people living in those times did not in fact start the "fire" of history but merely have to watch it burn.
4. "Fahrenheit 451" is a classic Ray Bradbury sci-fi story where "firemen" actually set fires to burn books and their subversive knowledge. Who is the main character, a "fireman" who learns the error of his censorious ways?

Answer: Guy Montag

Guy Montag is the central figure of this story, a man who learns via Clarisse McClellan of a subversive society where books are preserved despite the oppression of the state and has to choose between his closed-off life or abandoning everything for a chance at reviving the past.
5. Now for a diversion into anime/manga - in the Fullmetal Alchemist series, the State Alchemists are all given an epithet based on their particular area of expertise. Which of these alchemists is the famed "Flame Alchemist"?

Answer: Roy Mustang

Colonel Roy Mustang is the Flame Alchemist, and famous for his deadly role in the Ishbal Civil War of the backstory. His flame alchemy was devised by his mentor, Mr. Hawkeye, whose daughter sees to it that the alchemy is not weaponized in the future. Edward Elric is the title "Fullmetal Alchemist," Zolf Kimblee is the bomb-building "Crimson Alchemist," and Alex Louis Armstrong is the "Strong Arm Alchemist".
6. Back to music! Which band said that when you "feel the pain of a lifetime lost in a thousand days," that (titledrop!) "Through the Fire and Flames" you must "carry on"?

Answer: Dragonforce

Dragonforce did indeed write the epic song "Through the Fire and Flames," which clocks in at nearly seven and a half minutes. It is their most popular song and features very fast lyrics and instrumentation (200 beats/min) as well as a hard-charging melody.
7. Still in song but more theatrically, the end of which musical features the title character being taunted to burn himself alive so he can finally fulfill his lifelong dreams of being extraordinary?

Answer: Pippin

In "Pippin," the Stephen Schwartz musical, the title character Pippin is the prince and son of Charlemagne. He tries to find himself in an extraordinary life, but discovers that contriving a larger-than-life experience isn't really doable. The "Leading Player," an embodiment of his desires, tries to convince him to burn himself alive in a final blazing (but extraordinary) act - you'll have to see the show to discover what he chooses...
8. Still musical, but now in film, which Disney movie contains the surprisingly frightening and psychologically traumatic song "Hellfire," about a man whose desires are burning him and may send him to a fiery hell?

Answer: Hunchback of Notre Dame

Claude Frollo, the cruel magistrate who has lots of power at Notre Dame, finds himself tortured by impure thoughts of the dancing gypsy Esmeralda, and he sings "Hellfire" in the moment where he breaks down his desire to see the "witch" burn for tormenting him.
9. The Avatar: The Last Airbender series features a world where elemental forces can be manipulated by magic-users called "benders" who can "bend" their respective element (with the "Avatar" able to manipulate all four). Which characters represent the Fire Nation?

Answer: Zuko and Iroh

Zuko is the Prince of the Fire Nation, and Iroh his uncle. The two work together at first to capture the Avatar so Zuko can reclaim his place at court since his disgrace at the hands of his overbearing father. The Fire Nation has cruelly oppressed the other nations, and the Avatar and friends staying away from them occupies much of the early-season action of the series.
10. "Fire cannot kill a dragon," so goes the saying among a major dynasty in Westeros. Which family in "A Song of Ice and Fire" claims dragon-based heritage and has possible immunity to death by burning?

Answer: Targaryen

The Targaryen line was the last to hold the throne before Robert Baratheon took over in the backstory of "A Song of Ice and Fire"/"Game of Thrones". Danaerys and Viserys are the surviving children of the last king, while their older brother Rhaegar died in the war. When Viserys is harmed by burning, Danaerys alleges that he is not a "true dragon" as their valiant brother was.
