Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a 2021 song, UK singer-songwriter Adele sets fire to what unlikely thing?

Answer: The rain

Adele's second album, "21", was a record-breaker before it even had "Set Fire to the Rain" release as a single as, by the end of 2010, she'd already created classics out of "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You", both of which showcased her powerful vocals while topping out charts around the world.

"Set Fire to the Rain", the album's third single, which won the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance in 2013, appeared on ten different Billboard charts in the U.S., hitting number one on four of them. Oddly, it only made it to number eleven on the UK Singles Chart even though it went four-times platinum in her home country.
2. Super Mario can shoot fireballs, but generally only when he collects which of these power-ups?

Answer: A flower

The Fire Flower power-up is as old as the first "Super Mario Bros." game on the NES console (back in 1985) and, like the Mushroom, it allows a smaller Mario to be empowered, giving him more resilience in addition to the ability to shoot fireballs from his hands.

Some later games in the series have played a bit more fast-and-loose with when fireballs can be used, but generally, the Fire Flower changes his appearance from his normal blue and white outfit to a red and white one.
3. "Firestarter", written by Stephen King, was about a young girl who had the power of pyrokinesis. Who played this girl in the 1984 adaptation?

Answer: Drew Barrymore

Based on the 1980 Stephen King novel of the same name, "Firestarter" features a father and daughter on the run from mysterious government agents after it's discovered that the daughter, Charlie, has the ability to create and control fire. While much of the film follows their attempt to evade capture, the inevitable happens and the back half of the movie follows Charlie's escape at the hands of Martin Sheen's military captain and a tricky assassin portrayed by George C. Scott.

Drew Barrymore plays the role of Charlie in the original adaptation while Ryan Kiera Armstrong took the mantle in the 2022 Blumhouse remake.
4. The Fire Nation, which contains Prince Zuko and the tyrannical Fire Lord Ozai, features in what well-received animated TV show?

Answer: Avatar: The Last Airbender

In "Avatar: The Last Airbender", a rising, young Avatar by the name of Aang (of the Windbender Tribe) is found and freed, allowing him to help unite and protect the kingdoms from the tyrannical Fire Nation. Across three seasons of the show, he and his friends travel through the different realms en route to the final battle against Fire Lord Ozai during the passing of Sozin's Comet.

The show was very popular for Nickelodeon, leading to a direct sequel, "The Legend of Korra", which released in 2012 and was set generations later.
5. Which of these was the title of Susannah Cahalan's 2012 memoir (and its subsequent film adaptation) about her rare form of encephalitis?

Answer: Brain on Fire

"Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness" chronicles a very odd window in Cahalan's life as it explores the events that occurred when she was diagnosed with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, a period in which she was afflicted with violent episodes that she could not account for or remember. While many specialists chalked her symptoms-- often psychotic in nature-- to mental health causes, it was later determined that the right side of her brain was 'on fire'-- enflamed to the point of consequence.

"Brain on Fire" released as a film in 2016 with Chloë Grace Moretz playing the role of Cahalan.
6. Igor Stravinsky created which of these orchestral pieces, meant to accompany ballet, in 1910?

Answer: The Firebird

Created to be performed at the Palais Garnier in Paris in 1910, "The Firebird" was the first in a trio of works that Russian composer Igor Stravinsky made for the ballet there (preceding "Petrushka" in 1911 and "The Rite of Spring" in 1913). The vast differences between the works in Stravinsky's catalogue had patrons of the arts confused during his early era, but later critics indicated that he was instrumental in the shifting understanding of musical form in the twentieth century.

"The Firebird" is amongst his most famous works. Drawing from Russian and Slavic folklore, it doesn't necessarily refer to a phoenix, but a bird that foretells of great danger and aids a hero in overcoming it. The piece was included as the final arrangement in Disney's "Fantasia 2000".
7. The firemen are the one causing the fires in what 1953 book by Ray Bradbury?

Answer: Fahrenheit 451

At this point, "Fahrenheit 451" is a twentieth-century dystopian classic in the same space as Orwell's "1984" and Huxley's "Brave New World" albeit with a different approach. In the plot, books are outlawed, and 'firemen' are called upon to collect all literary works with the intent to burn, censor, and erase society's knowledge. Releasing in 1953, it's hard to ignore Bradbury's allegorical approach to both WWII Nazism and growing Russian/Cold War concerns; book burning was actually happening during the prior decades.

Bradbury, generally known for his science fiction and fantasy, also wrote classics like "The Martian Chronicles" and "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and contributed to "The Twilight Zone" before adapting dozens of his stories for "The Ray Bradbury Theater" in the 1980s.
8. Denis Leary played a firefighter working at a New York City firehouse in what FX dramedy from 2004-2011?

Answer: Rescue Me

Airing as one of FX's early classics, "Rescue Me" managed to sustain strong reception for the edgier FOX cable network from the jump, allowing Denis Leary to stretch his dramatic acting chops while he continued his stand-up career. Featuring Leary as senior firefighter Tommy Gavin, the show started airing a few years after the 9/11 attacks, the consequences of which weighed heavily on the plot.

The trauma of this event, coupled with the obvious stresses of the dangerous profession, created a dramatic emotional powder keg.
9. Which of these fire-wielders is a member of the X-Men?

Answer: Pyro

Considering the ubiquity of wielding fire, you'd almost expect that a bunch of mutants and superheroes would specialize in this. And you'd be right. Pyro may have been the most popular mutant from the series to do so (even appearing in the original trilogy as a pseudo-villain portrayed by Aaron Stanford), but the comics also featured Sunfire and Firestar, both also sharing the ability to manipulate flames.

Though the Human Torch (Johnny Storm) and Ghost Rider are Marvel characters capable of using fire, neither were X-Men. Sun Boy also uses fire, but he's a part of the Legion of Super-Heroes, a DC property.
10. In the "Harry Potter" series, the name for the Order of the Phoenix was inspired by Dumbledore's own phoenix. What was its name?

Answer: Fawkes

Fawkes appears in the "Harry Potter" series as early as the second book/film, appearing in Dumbledore's office in Hogwarts, at which point Harry witnesses him die and be reborn from the ashes. It's a particularly important moment as Fawkes later reappears at a pivotal point in Harry's descent into the Chamber of Secrets, arriving with the Sorting Hat and Godric Gryffindor's sword before healing Harry's basilisk wound with its magical healing tears.

As it's later discovered, Fawkes' tail feathers were incorporated into two wands-- one possessed by Lord Voldemort and the other by Harry Potter, himself.
