Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lisa Fonssagrives

One of the first to which the supermodel label has been applied, Lisa Fonssagrives was born in Sweden during 1911. Her birth name was Lisa Birgitta Bernstone. Painting, sculpting and dance were her subjects at a Berlin dance school and dance was the initial focus of her career.

Her modeling took over and was mainly between the 1930s and 1950s. She regarded modeling as a form of dancing, just using arrested dance movements. By the time she moved to the US in 1939, she was already a 'good clothes hanger' (as she described herself). Cover photos on magazines such as "Time", "Vogue" and "Vanity Fair" (the original one) followed.
2. Jean Patchett

Born Jean Ward Pratchett in 1926, American fashion model Jean Pratchett came to prominence in the late 1940s through to the early 1960s, having signed up with the Ford Model Agency in 1948. She debuted with "Vogue" that year. Appearing on over 40 magazine covers during her career, she was one of the defining faces of the 1950s and noted for being one of the first haute couture models to appear remote rather than warm and friendly. One of her definitive photos was the "Vogue" cover for April 1950 by Iriving Penn. Penn was to marry Lisa Fonssagrives that year.
3. Veruschka

Perhaps the first German supermodel, Vera Lehndorff is better known by her professional name Veruschka. Born in 1939 to an East Prussian aristocratic family, her father was executed following a failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler and the family estates were lost when East Prussia was annexed by the Soviet Union at end of the Second World War.

As a model, she was 'discovered' in Italy before ending up in the US. The 1960s was when she came to prominence, appearing on all four "Vogue" magazines at various times.

She was also a pioneer of body painting.
4. Twiggy

Synonymous with the 'swinging sixties' in Britain, Twiggy was born Lesley Hornby in 1949. She had a relatively short modeling career from 1965 to when she retired in 1970 but nevertheless achieved status as an international supermodel with her thin build and androgynous appearance. She was able to turn from modeling to have a success career as an actress in stage musicals, on TV and in film, as well as a singer. She also returned to fashion as an older model.
5. Christie Brinkley

Christie Brinkley (née Hudson) is an American model who was born in 1954. Her modeling career started in 1973 after being discovered by an American photographer in a Paris post office. Some of her achievements include over 500 magazine covers, a record 25-year contract with the cosmetics brand CoverGirl as well as many other contracts.

She has also turned her hand to acting (such as 'the girl in the red Ferrari' in the 1983 film "National Lampoon's Vacation" and the 1997 sequel), illustrating, TV appearances, writing, designing and activism.
6. Cindy Crawford

Born in 1966, Cindy Crawford was studying chemical engineering at university when she made the decision to commit to modeling. The 1980s and 1990s was her most active period and the height of her popularity. This included music video appearances for George Michael (1990), Jon Bon Jovi (1994), Duran Duran (2011) and Taylor Swift (2015).

Another model with over 500 magazine cover appearances, she retired from modeling in 2000 (with only occasional shoots since then), moving into acting and business ventures instead such as selling furniture.
7. Kate Moss

The British model Kate Moss was born in 1974. She comes in towards the end of the supermodel era, which is generally considered to have been at its peak during the 1980s and 1990s. She was classed as a part of the heroin chic trend of the early 1990s, which could be said to be partly a reaction to the healthy and vibrant looks of the 1980s typified by models such as Cindy Crawford and Elle MacPherson.

Her waifish figure and modeling start at the age of 14 years no doubt helped. She was contributing to various music videos from the late 1990s, has been in many advertising campaigns as well as a contributing fashion editor for the British edition of "Vogue" magazine.
8. Gisele Bündchen

Born in 1980, the Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen was being proclaimed one of the world's highest-paid models as early as 2001, combining modeling earnings with real-estate and businesses. "Vogue" magazine credited her with ending the heroin chic era as well as featuring on the "Vogue" magazine cover more than 100 times.

In fact, she has graced the cover of over 1,200 magazines. She is associated with the 'horse walk' style of runway walking, helping to separate her out from the crowd.
9. Kendall Jenner

Born in 1995, American model Kendall Jenner first rose to prominence through the reality TV series "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" (2007-2021) in which she starred, being one of the five sisters and half-sisters in the Kardashian-Jenner blended family.

Her modeling started in 2009 at the age of 13 and has gradually gained prominence, ousting Gisele Bundchen as the world's highest-paid model in 2017 for the first time, according to "Forbes" magazine.
10. Kaia Gerber

Kaia Gerber is the last in this list, being born in 2001. Her modeling started when she was aged 10 with Versace and has extended to acting in TV since 2016 and films since 2022. She is following in her mother's footsteps, being the second child and only daughter of Cindy Crawford.

It is perhaps not surprising then that she has appeared with her mother on "Vogue" magazine covers. Her rise to prominence has come since 2019.
