Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whose castle stands proud at the center of The Magic Kingdom in Disney World?

Answer: Cinderella

The Cinderella Castle is not as it appears. It looks taller than it actually is due to a technique called "forced perspective". Large, fake bricks at the base of the castle gradually decrease in size as they ascend the structure. In reality, no bricks are used in the castle at all. Instead, it is constructed from a combination of concrete, steel, fibreglass, and plaster.

When the plans for the castle were drawn up, Walt Disney himself intended to move into the castle with his family in a special family suite. Unfortunately, Walt passed away before this could become a reality. Another interesting fact about the castle is that it faces south, just like The Sleeping Beauty Castle. This orientation was chosen to give amateur photographers the best opportunity to capture the perfect photo.

The Sleeping Beauty Castle, situated in Disneyland, California, was opened in 1971 and is the only Disney castle that was envisioned and experienced by Walt Disney himself. Standing at 77 feet tall, it utilises forced perspective, employing lighter, bluer hues on the upper towers to produce an illusion of increased height, rendering it the smallest Disney castle, designed to act as an enchanting symbol rather than a large-scale building.
2. How many parks (excluding waterparks) are in Walt Disney World?

Answer: Four

Walt Disney World features four primary theme parks. These main parks are Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.
3. What is the name of the lake or lagoon that the Grand Floridian sits on?

Answer: Seven Seas Lagoon

The Seven Seas Lagoon is not a natural lake; it is actually man-made. The building of the lake began in 1967 and was completed in 1971. The lake is not used as originally planned due to safety concerns with visitors swimming while boats are also operating in the same area. It was also noted at the time the water was contaminated and could be a health issue.

Following an alligator incident in 2016, the beaches and pathways surrounding the Seven Seas Lagoon underwent renovations. There are cordoned-off gates designed to prevent guests from approaching the water's edge. Furthermore, signs have been installed to alert guests regarding the wildlife inhabiting the lake.
4. The Walt Disney park "EPCOT" is an acronym. What does this acronym stand for?

Answer: Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow

The acronym goes back to 1966 when Walt thought of the phrase. When the park was first opened it was called "EPCOT Center"; however, the name was changed in 1996 when it was just known as "Epcot". In 1999, the name changed again to "EPCOT", using all capital letters.

One of the big attractions at this park is the Spaceship Earth ride which is like a huge ball. The structure stands 180 ft (55 m) and has a circumference of 518.1 ft (157.9 m).
5. Disney used to have three water parks: Typhoon Lagoon, River Country and which of these?

Answer: Blizzard Beach

Disney once had three water parks: Typhoon Lagoon, River Country, and Blizzard Beach. River Country was Disney's first water park, running from 1976 until it closed in 2001 and was eventually permanently shut down. River Country, which opened in 1976 near Fort Wilderness, featured a rustic, lake-inspired theme before its indefinite closure in 2001. Typhoon Lagoon, which opened in 1989, is a bigger and more modern water park than the ones that shut down, known for its large surf pool.
6. The clocks on every building on the ride known as the "Tower of Terror" are all stopped at 8:05.

Answer: True

The attraction is situated within Disney's Hollywood Studios. The ride draws inspiration from a fictional event that occurred on October 31, 1939, when lightning struck the Hollywood Tower Hotel. What happened in 1939 was that there was a storm on Halloween night and lightning hit the building at 8:05. The story then goes on to say at that time five people who were in the lift (elevator) disappeared when power was restored to the building. What happened to the five people couldn't be explained, and they were never found.

When I first did the research, I thought this really happened!
7. MGM played host to the Walt Disney 100 year celebration.

Answer: True

"100 Years of Magic" was one of the most unforgettable and distinctive experiences in Disney Parks' history! This celebration began at the Walt Disney World Resort and took place from late 2001 until 2003. While the celebration started on the 30-year anniversary of the Walt Disney World Resort, "100 Years of Magic" honoured the life and legacy of Disney.

The main venue for this magnificent celebration was Disney-MGM Studios, which is now known as Disney's Hollywood Studios.
8. What was the name of the ride on which William Pollack tragically died in 2000?

Answer: Splash Mountain

On November 5, 2000, 37-year-old William Pollack died on the Splash Mountain log flume ride at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, Florida. Pollack was seated in the last row of a boat carrying six passengers when, halfway through the nine-minute ride, he climbed out and was hit by another of the eight-passenger boats, according to witnesses.

Pollack was the first visitor to the Magic Kingdom to die as a result of an accident on a ride, as stated by Disney spokeswoman Rena Callahan. She stated that a ride malfunction did not cause the incident that occurred on Sunday. The Sheriff's Office has classified the incident as an accident.
9. Which of these listed is a Disney theme park?

Answer: Silver Dollar City

Silver Dollar City features an extensive selection of outstanding roller coasters and rides that cater to families, in addition to a delightful range of entertainment options such as performances, street acts, and educational experiences. Located on 61 acres in Stone County, Missouri, near Branson and Branson West, the park was opened on May 1, 1960. Everything is based on the 1880s Ozark Village; it offers a deeply engaging experience. Once inside the park there are distinctive attractions, historical displays, and interactive experiences.
10. In what year was the Walt Disney World officially opened?

Answer: 1971

Walt Disney World officially began operations on October 1, 1971. At its opening, the resort featured the Magic Kingdom theme park, two hotels, the Contemporary and the Polynesian, and two golf courses. On October 25, 1971, Roy O. Disney dedicated the resort in memory of his brother, Walt Disney.

The order in which the parks were built is as follows.

The Magic Kingdom Park was the first to be opened on October 1, 1971, showcasing Cinderella Castle.

Second on the list was EPCOT (October 1, 1982), initially launched as EPCOT Center.

Disney's Hollywood Studios opened on May 1, 1989. When it first opened, it was known as Disney-MGM Studios.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park opened on April 22, 1998. The latest significant theme park was introduced.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park represents the fourth theme park established by the company on April 22, 1998, offering a distinctive blend of a conventional zoo and an engaging theme park experience. Spanning 580 acres, it emphasizes animal conservation and is the largest Disney theme park globally.

Two water parks were also opened: Disney's Typhoon Lagoon (June 1, 1989) and Disney's Blizzard Beach (April 1, 1995).
